It seems they used incindary rockets to attack airships LZ around Verdun. I read this in a book titled "Rocket's Missiles and Space Travel." It was an excerpt written by a Zeppelin captain, Lenheman (sp?) who later died on the Hindenburg. It was said that an airship, LZ-77 went down in the area around Verdun. This was a mystery because artillary ussually just went through the gas envelopes. Later LZ-90 atempted to bomb a rail junction supplying Verdun. The ship overshot the target and the captain ordered a 360 for a second attempt. It was then that rockets were spotted. Some came close to LZ-90. The crew dropped all balast and bombs in an attempt to escape. But the rockets kept coming even as LZ-90 fled. They were coming close to the ship which was now at 10000ft. The rockets were mounted on the back of a truck which was driven after the Zeppelin. It was then assumed that LZ-77 had fallen due to rocket attack. Are there any pictures of these rockets? Were they the same as Le Preier rockets? I didn't think the rocket carried by Nieuport 11s could reach 10000ft when being launched vetically from the ground. Yep, I recalled the A.1 as soon as I hit "send" (sorry Bob). I believe Peter Fedders has made a AJP kit; I don't count them as I can't get excited about that much brass. Peter, was it any fun? I think Glencoe sitting on the old Aurora DH4 has kept anyone else from doing a modern kit, and Eric is refusing to tip his hand on the FK8 because he is convinced that Blue Max is waiting to snatch his customer base out from under him! The Wheeling WV area (including Pittsburgh) is not exactly a hotbed of modeling and model shops either. I used to make a thrice-yearly trek to a model shop near Pittsburgh back when Aurora and K&B were on the shelves; but I only get up that way now when the Chi Cubs come to town. I'm keeping the post office mystified lately with boxes from England, Czech Republic, and Poland--I hope x-rays don't have a negative effect on resin... On Tuesday, my little local model club had its meeting; I found out what a "drag link" is from the car guys so I can proceed on my still-in-progress ot Polish armored car. They also showed me some terrific sanding sticks: these are found in the nail polish/manicure section of your local KMart. Having been a sculptor, potter, welder and teacher of other messy things for most of my life, nail polish has not played a significant role in my life, so I never would have found these otherwise. They come in at least three grades, each with two different grits on either side of a 1/8th inch piece of foam rubber; the really great thing is that they can easily be cut with scissors, so one can make custom size/shape sanding sticks for those hard-to-get-at places--now how come you guys didn't tell me about these?? On Wednesday and again today, boxes arrived with wonderful things: from Sopwith Hobbies, the Hi Tech Breguet 14B2, Tom's Modelworks Pfalz D.VIII, and Sierra's Roland D.VI (can't imagine how I missed that one first time around) along with some paint and other stuff; and then from Aeroclub, my little Polish Albatros B.II and Friedrichshaffen G.IIIa. By my accounting, at the rate of one kit a month, I'll get to the G.IIIa in February, 2026--hope you folks are here to help It's 82 degrees fahrenheit, the weekend looks to be lovely, I get to put brake lines on my Polish car tonight, and Eric's Gotha is on the way... Actually if you visit a beauty supply shop they are available in grits from 80, 100, 150, 250, 600 and buffing, possible even more I think. Check out the beauty supply shops on the web, I bet you find plenty of stuff there. Thems are what I calls "sandin' irons". Gotta make sure they are the waterproof variety. There is a wide one maybe inch and a quarter that you can lay flat and sand out small vac pieces on. Hate to have to model without them. This brings up an interesting question. What are the 5 most reached for tools on your bench? Mine are: Optivisor X-Acto (#11) Tweezers Sandin' irons Glue needles Yeah that's 6 but behind the optivisor they are about equally indispensable along with the sprue nippers and the #80 drill in the pin vise and the.........;-) What about y'all? sp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 21:50:13 -0400 From: "TOM PLESHA" To: Subject: Re: Tool question was: Re: The Week That Was: now sanding sticks Message-ID: <000901c0d505$bafd7760$925a570c@tom> Steven M.Perry says: > What are the 5 most reached for tools on your bench? > > Mine are: > Optivisor > X-Acto (#11) > Tweezers > Sandin' irons > Glue needles > Yeah that's 6 but behind the optivisor they are about equally indispensable > along with the sprue nippers and the #80 drill in the pin vise and > the.........;-) > > What about y'all? > sp I agree completely, and add: thin flexible 6 inch scale glass plate tape-tamiya, labeling, etc. Tom > ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 21:51:44 -0400 From: "TOM PLESHA" To: Subject: Re: Gotha Message-ID: <000f01c0d505$f0f1b8e0$925a570c@tom> Thanks ! Message-ID: <01b401c0d51f$8da3d240$5fe23ccc@oemcomputer> Hi Matt, Need a good Spad 13? DML/Dragon has a great one in 1/48 that is still readily available with the post war Reed Chambers markings, and decals are available from Americal/Gryphon for Esc.3 spad 13's, as well as in the Glencoe French Aces kit. For U.S. decals check out the PD decals sheet, markings for Frank luke, 103rd Aero and a couple of other different Indian head squadrons. So a good Spad 13 is not needed in 1/48, it's already there! And for those lucky 1500 people, there is the OOP Blue Max Spad 7, Gryphon has decals for S.3 and S.124.
