I plan to cull my built models down to about half of what I have because of house remodeling and decreased space for display, thus I'm photographing all of them for the Rychlewski archives. The photos I'm sending are of models that I think listees would find interesting: unusual airplanes or kits that don't appear very often. As I look over the collection, I find I've built a high number of off-the-wall models (I think this is telling me something...) Anyway, I'm pleased that you're enjoying them DAVID BURKE wrote: > > > I echo previous sentiments: I like the CDL effect. How'd you do it? Being an old traditionalist, I still paint most everything with a brush. CDL is especially fun because I thin the paint down a bit and brush it on rather quickly, not trying for an even coating. The paint pools in the low areas, creating 'shadow' and runs off the high points (like ribs)--the end result is a sufficiently streaky appearance which I feel communicates the appearance of the CDL. This only works well on a white plastic surface like vacuform styrene; I suppose it could work over white primer as well. Let me know off-list if you might be interested. Well, two things about that site get me. You hit the nail on the head with the lack of on topic coverage for one of them. And the second one is it's a pay site. Why pay? For on topic material you can do no better than Internet Modeler. In fact, I have talked to a few people about IM - who aren't associated with IM at all - and they're happy for IM and the fact that they not only cover "our" time frame, but also tend to cover the "esoteric". And they're free. While on the subject of free, you also have Hyperscale, Modeling Madness, and if you're into armor than you can talk Missing Links, and for those of us doing proper scale modeling, On The Way. True, if you're worried about being paid for your reviews, then the *only* option is airandseamodels. Why do you think they charge a fee? IM's willing to give you kits (which I like ;-) and you don't have a lot of pressure to complete the articles (within certain limits of course, right Chris? ;-). Personally I'll stick with IM. Not only because I do reviews for them, but because they're the only ones who normally do WW1 topics as well as the unusual. What other internet modeling 'zine is going to get the Legion 1/72nd vacform Er-2, or the Quadraplane, for that matter? And as far as "building what they want", take a look at Richard's case with Squadron and the LVG C.V. I know IM puts no such limits on their reviewers. They don't tell you how to build it, just that they want it built. Cool, no? Fortunately, a picture of this aeroplane exists - I have it in the Squadron Signal Nieuport book. I have some questions: 1. The kit contains a fairly nasty "windshield/windscreen" thing in front of the cockpit. It is solid plastic. Some Nieuport 16's seemed to have this item but I cannot see it in the blurry picture of the A134. Anyone have any information on this windscreen? 2. The Toko instruction say to paint the undersurfaces grey but I know some sources have it in CDL. Anyone have any information on this grey versus CDL issue? I've heard a fair amount of complaints about Toko kits but for me, they are always nice. True, the decals might not be the best (although they don't disintegrate into bits like some) and the struts might need trimming or replacing here and there but funadamentally, I really like their kits.
