The first one I bought was back when they first came out and I ordered it from an on-line shop in Poland because they hadn't gotten to the US yet. All the parts required a fair amount of cleanup. This kit is much better. Very little flash, although there is a sticky substance on the surface of the parts which will require careful washing. It looks like they cleaned up their mold as the wing rib stations do not seem overdone at all like I recall from the first kit. The quality of the fine parts is outstanding and right up there with the newer Eduards. If you didn't get this kit due to reports of somewhat crude & flashy parts, it seems that ICM has improved their production quality. sp ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 21:16:30 From: "Michael Kendix" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: In-box Re-review Message-ID: >From: "Steven M.Perry" >I took advantage of SMO's sale on the ICM I'lya Muromets kit. > >The first one I bought was back when they first came out and I ordered >it >from an on-line shop in Poland because they hadn't gotten to the US >yet. >All the parts required a fair amount of cleanup. > >This kit is much better. If >you didn't get this kit due to reports of >somewhat crude & flashy parts, >it seems that ICM has improved their >production quality. Steve: Excellent that this is the case for this kit, however, the same cannot be said for some of ICM other products. Lack of consistency is the name of the game here. First, the (ot) ZiL-157's were fantastic but they were from Omega-K and re-boxed in ICM boxes. The (ot) I-16 was OK but had several sink marks on the wing's leading edge. The (ot) Su-2 has sink marks all over the place. A good accurate mold with plenty of detail but all the sanding and filling required results in loss of detail and you have to re-scribe etc. My Il'ya's were nice molds but had warped fuselage and mega-flash. The oily substance you describe was not really problemmatic because I had to sand the whole damn thing anyway. Maybe you have a really "early" Ilya from when the molds were newer?:) Michael _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 23:16:43 +0200 From: "Gaston Graf" To: Subject: a Q to our friends from Poland: Hindenburg's estate in Neudeck. I know he hadn't worked up the fortitude to taste it earlier, but if this happened just after breakfast he may finally have tried it. If he overdosed, not being an Australian and properly trained from birth, he almost certainly will have fallen about gasping and moaning. Also - my wife says - if he really *has* had a collapsed lung, it may be due to high levels of blood in his Vegemite stream. The solution is to rub a full serving into the chest on the affected side. Take care to spread the balm evenly, and *do* wear gloves. Cover the treated area with thinly sliced and buttered toast - rye is best, butter outward - and wrap tightly with "rib" tape. If the delicious smell doesn't help his breathing, I'm sorry, but he's beyond help. ;-) Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s). He is an impatient patient and wants to get the hell out of there. He suspects that the FBI tracking implant is really a chest drainage tube - how silly can you get? He says that praying for a Heretic is useless, so don't waste your breath. Fortunately, he sounded like he still had plenty when I talked to him. He wants out tomorrow, and I fear that I heard blood in his voice - I'm afraid that the hospital may be missing some orderlies and candystripers as the blood sounded like it belonged to someone else! Anyway, the e-mails are getting to him via Colleen, and he sounds better. Anyways, thought Y'all'd like to know. DB P.S.: I read about Shane's theory with the Vegemite. I wish that Ernie had brought it to Mobile so's I coulda tried it. I DID buy some Marmite this last weekend, but haven't had the stones to open the jar. It would go something like this: "Dear Reader, in two to three pages I'm going to attempt to sum up a war the roots of which go back to little hamlets of mud in the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia and begins to come into above ground view somewhere around the time of Pepin the Short and Charlemagne, or Queen Victoria and her daughter, "Vicky" in 1855, depending on the keenness of one's vision. By way of illustration, I would like the reader to mind that a certain Mr. Massie's book on the movement toward war between only two of the many beligerents constitutes 908 pages of 46 chapters excluding appendix, bibliography, notes, and index, (for notes add another fifty-seven pages). Let us begin by acknowledging that the war meant long hours and chemical and mechanical hazards for millions of women who went to work in the man's place in order to meet the requirements of the first "industrialized" war between technologically and industrially developed nations, unspeakable agony and despair for millions of shivering, sick, soldiers living in a world of mud and the stinking humus of corpses, new and old, buried and unearthed for a victory which could never redeem the sacrifice rendered to achieve it. In short, an exercise in human misery and loss which could benefit no one but a communist." When I was a teenager I could build a model to a standard I enjoyed and others lauded in two days. Now I know too much. When I was a teenager I could summarize the major events of WW1 in 2 - 3 pages to a standard of which I was proud and which satisfied my teacher and the curriculum. Now I know too much. Let him put the things he sees as important into the words he feels describes them. In twenty years, like you and I, he'll realise he's learned and understood so much that he no longer *knows* anything - and the assignment will be long completed and forgotten.
