One of the members had been given a lot of books from the USAF library at Bentwaters and passed on a couple " on them biplane things" to me. Fighters by Thomas Funderburk 1965, and Conquerors of The Air by C. Demand and H. Emde, 1968. Both are books of their time, but an interesting read. Conquerors has two view drawings and colour profiles, Fighters has some pictures I'd not seen before. The disappointment? Because the swedish aristocracy spoke french. Nowadays nearly all new words are english. /Neil Dave wrote: That is correct and many Russian words are direct transliterations from the French ('nouveauriche' has only seven letters in Russian but sounds the same...). The Russian Navy, on the other hand, uses a lot of British terminology because Peter the Great contracted a Scottish admiral to set up that service. And in case you want to know Russian Army slang for 'reliable', it is 'Studebaker' - but that stems from WWII Lend/Lease so is "ot". Da svydaniya! Thompson" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: RE: Digital Modeling Message-ID: Thanks for the kind words, folks. Yep the image is 1500X1200 or so, so those of you using smaller screen resolutions will have to scroll around. That's as far as I could bring myself to reduce it- it's really much better at its full res of 4700X2700, and just bringing it down to 1500X1200 caused the loss of considerable detail. It's an interesting question as to how much credit I can take for the final quality, and how much I can't. The rendering engine I use, Lightscape, uses a technique called radiosity, which models light distribution through a scene using algorithms originally designed by engineers to model heat distribution through a system, and therefore results in lighting results that are far more accurate than your average rendering system, including very high end renderers like Mental Ray and Maya's rendering engine. Even so, the final result involved about 20 hours of post processing in Photoshop, where the raw render is cloned to several layers, and layer masks are used to isolate specific layers for display of highlighted areas and shadow areas, all of which involved considerable tweaking using curves, levels, and hue/saturation/luminosity, where the quality of the final result relies on the skill of the artist's eye to get it all to blend seamlessly and match the lighting conditions of the background. I apologize if that's all Greek to some of you, but it's hard to explain this stuff without being fairly technical. RK, well, all I can say is I offer it as a lighting reference if it can be of any assistance in finalizing your version;-) One thing you folks on the list can help me with, is that I would like to do more of these, producing prints for sale. Now I know I can very easily make money doing this producing images of modern aircraft and WWII types, but good lord, they've been done to death and besides, I LOVE WWI! I'd much rather do a whole series (20 or so) with this model of various DVII's, staffels in flight, in combat, on the ground, then move on to Albatros's, Camels, SE5's...but I can't if there's not a real market for it. So tell me if many of you would be interested in purchasing prints similar to what you see on the link, and I hope the answer is yes! Please don't banish me to modeling F-15's;-) -----Original Message----- From: wwi@wwi-models.org [mailto:wwi@wwi-models.org]On Behalf Of KarrArt@aol.com Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2001 4:04 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Digital Modeling In a message dated 4/1/01 10:54:22 AM Pacific Daylight Time, vossie@mindspring.com writes: << Anyway, please check it out folks and let me know what you think. Nothing of OT interest, but the S-61Ns we fly in are becoming veterans. At least the old heli-buses keep the Sikorsky alive. I got myself a Fuji 4700 digital camera, so far I am very impressed by the field of depth, but miss the possibility of adding filters/blitz. Watch out for more photos when I have learned a bit more. Still in the process of checking out my mail and the modelling pages, noticed that both Hannants and NKR lists the following from A-Model to be released in a not to distant future: Spad S.A.2 & Spad S.A.4 Nieuport IV Avro 504K & U-1(Soviet '504K') Polish company GP Models displays a postage stamp sized image of boxart for U-1, looks pretty much like an Avro 504K to me. All of course in 1/72 scale, just hope the quality has improved since the N.A. T-6 kit I bought at the RAFM some years ago. It was so bad that I just threw it away after opening the box while still at the hotel, saw no reason to bring it home. If they just get the Avros fuselage right, then I could use Airfix wings and some sandpaper to make a decent model. Hoping to get a chance to test my new cameras during a visit to the RNoAF museum, they have an Avro 504K exhibited and a lot of ot aircraft wating for restoration from the fighting between Soviets and JG.5 over Northern Norway in WW2.
