I really did like that book.... I had forgotten about 'The Red Knight of Germany' but I did read Gibbons as well as Reynolds. And I think the demise of Aurora came about when I saw that I could buy about three Revell 1/72nd kits plus paint and glue for every two Aurora, and my Scotts-Irish ancestors took over. (it was something like 49 cents for Revell and 89 for Aurora, IIRC). If I had known that Toko/Roden and Eduard were going to do to resurface in 1/72nd WWI, Matt would have had yet another turned to the dark side (I build WWII in 1/72nd). But you see, there was this bright, shiny new 1/48th scale DML Spad, and a Dr.I, and a D.VIII/E.V and a D.VII, just sitting there.... .Mark. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Monday, March 05, 2001 11:54 AM Subject: Re: What Got You Started? > In a message dated 3/5/01 7:52:04 AM Pacific Standard Time, > MSHANNON@tnrcc.state.tx.us writes: > > << > My father found a magazine that was about the same format and size as the > Popular Mechanic's/Popular Science's of the day, full of grainy photos and on > paper one step up from newsprint, but it had all these interesting ones that > weren't mentioned as often, and even tried to explain all the Nieuport > numbering, including the meter-names, and I discovered the wonders of Farman > 'Shorthorns' and 'Longhorns', Sopwith 1 ½ Strutters, Roland 'Warlfische' > [sic], and 'Bloody Paralyzers'.
