Now everyone knows why I didn't retire in Newfoundland... My condolensces to MVJ. Modelling is on the back burner for a while - I disassembled and stripped the fabric-covered tailfeathers on my 1:1 scale aeroplane yesterday. Now comes the paint-stripping, sandblasting, priming and recovering in real fabric, not a styrene substitute. Unless I really screw up, there will be no "starved cow" look at the end of all this. Then I get to tackle the wings! And I really was planning to get something going for the Sopwith cook-up, so I'll just have to invent the 27-hour day. I have a Camel, a Baby and a Snipe all sitting here forlornly awaiting my tender 1/48th touch. I finally solved the "central" issue by dispensing with the bamboo and chucking the Estring right into the tool - otherwise the wire flopped in mad circles and refused to go where aimed. I have perfected the rigging hole-drilling jig idea that I stole from Shane Weier by incorporating brass tubes in a block of plastic. These tubes lead the wildly gyrating guitar string to the correct point to begin a hole in the wing. I will take some pictures of this handy little tool, if RK can explain how he gets his wire centered in his chuck. And I poke holes in my fingers, too, whenever I use a guitar string. Lance >> When I make up one of these drills, I never really worry about precisely centering the string in the bamboo shaft. The bamboo I use is a length of thin skewer, a hair maybe over 1/16". I make a hole in the end of the skewer piece with a sewing needle and just glue the string into it. Any hole to be drilled gets a slight pilot hole picked with a needle, then I get the string-drill point in this and buzz away. Since the piece of string isn't all that long, there's not that much whipping, and also the slight flexibilty of the string makes it vaguely self-centering when drilling. The only reason for the bamboo is that I don't have a chuck small enough to hold only the string....if I could find one that would grip tight down to .006", I'd go for it. Hence the black and white striping on the tail, the jasta marking. "Die optische Taeuschung" (the optical illusion) was what Kirschstein called it, thinking that all of the additional striping would throw off an enemy pilot's aim. About 30cm on the roof of my house, and don't let it fall on the flowers but I'd appreciate another 30cm on the lawn to kill it and save wastefull mowing time. Summer is NOT modelling time. Gotta confess that I am to lazy to reread it in Udets book now but you maybe can find that detail in the translation of Udets book at my website. As usual, such infos about the Aces can be found at the ACES section. btw: I got a fantastic book today from 1923. It's called "In der Luft unbesiegt" (in the air undefeated) and holds a lot of reports of German pilots and crews, among the most popular aces such as Göring, MvR, Ritter von Greim, Ritter von Schleich, Carl Bolle, Carl Bodenschatz and other. There is also a section about several bombing raids in Zeppelins as well as reports of Balloon obeservers under fire. I just read a bit of the Jasta Boelcke story which sounds very interesting. More stuff to translate and write about ;o). sincerely Gaston Graf (ggraf@vo.lu) Meet the Royal Prussian Fighter Squadron 2 "Boelcke" at: http://www.jastaboelcke.de > -----Original Message----- > From: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu [mailto:wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu]On Behalf Of > Matt Bittner > Sent: Monday, February 05, 2001 7:55 PM > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: One more German question > > > Thanks for those who helped me with the JG question.
