It got us this very interesting history of John Porte, extremely interesting and rather tragic. I was just about to write for the same reason I also wrote from work without references, my sin was calling AD the Admirality Department, lucikily no-one noticed, so I can correct myself. It should be the Air Department of the Admirality. I think you were much more correct having Pemberton-Billing as the grandfather of the Spitfire, the AD and Wight were connected but not very much. I looked this up in a book that I recommend very much, it's called "The complete illustrated Encyclopedia of the worlds Aircraft" by David Mondey. It has a Swordfish on the cover, I was given it as a present, and my initial reaction was "oh no not another coffee-table book", and the first 61 pages are just that, but then you get an A-Z of the worlds aircraft manufacturers, nearly all of them, and I mean historically too, there's a section for Wight, and J.Samuel White another Supermarine predecssor. Just opening at random I turned up Descamps, how many of you knew that he was cheif-engineer for Anatra, worked for Aviatik at Mulhouse before the war, and then built several prototypes under his own name after the war. This book is a gold-mine, snap it up if you ever see it, written in 1978 it probably flopped, because it was too difficult for the coffee-table buyers, and looked wrong to us others. /Neil Well it will teach me to open my mouth at work when I'm miles away from references. The sub-contractors for Felixstowes were; Aircraft Manufacturing Co SE Saunders May Harden and May And the Curtis Aeroplane Co There were others notably Norman Thompson but not Pemberton Billings (aka Supermarine) lol that'll learn me. Engage brain before engaging mouth ;) Now on to something more interesting than my memory screw up, as Neil pointed out John Porte designed the Felixstowes. Which started as modifications to Curtis flying boats but ended up as pretty much completely redesigned and remanufactured aircraft. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 13:10:03 -0500 From: "TOM PLESHA" To: Subject: Re: Your Fav, post SEND buton thought Message-ID: <001b01c08955$8a7012c0$cd734c0c@tom> ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven M.Perry" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2001 12:32 PM Subject: Your Fav, post SEND buton thought > What, to you, is the most asthetically pleasing OT airplane? > > HEY LURKERS: > > This one is pure opinion and y'all have one too, let's hear it. On the Allied side, Nieuports 11 or 17 are both rather pleasing, along with the Hanriot HD 1. The Nie 28 doesn't cut it for me - it's a bit too well rounded and looks like a 17 that's gone to seed. Just like, it has too many rolling curves and is not as agile as its predecessors! British planes generally have too many external wires for my aesthetic (and modelling!) tastes (sorry Len), although the Bristol Scout is a nice looking plane. The SE5a doesn't have the aesthetics for me - it looks like the nose was designed by a different designer from the rest of the plane. It does look like it means business though. For me, it's the central powers planes that have the aesthetics (which includes markings and paint scheme, where they generally take the biscuit). The Oeffag Albatros DIII in sworl camo is quite something, especially with its engine cover on to improve the lines. The Pfalz DIII is a good looking plane, but I guess my slightly surprise favbourite is the Fokker DVI. A nice clean plane that looks like a tidied up Dr1. And when you cover it in lozenge, it looks pretty good to me. And yes, I have all planes mentioned in the unbuilt pile except the Nie 11 and the Hanriot pile. And I'll get the Nie 11 when Eduard release it. So many models, so little time. Mind you, one of the reasons I like WW1 planes is that most of them aren't aesthetically pleasing (he says, looking at his half built BE2e). Most of them look so odd it's amazing they flew, let alone fought. What, to you, is the most aesthetically pleasing OT airplane?

German: Albatros D.V, ( I also really like the Fokker DR.I)
British: Sopwith Triplane
French: Nieuport 17
Italian: Caproni Triplane Bombers
But if I could only buy one kit, I would have to go with the Albatros.
Very sleek and sassy looking.  It also looks fast just sitting on the ground!

How to choose? It always seems to vary based on the model being worked on and the mood of the day. But always on the list: Albatross D.III - I know most folks say the D.V and it is gorgeous. But the D.III just does something to me. Hanriot HD.1 - Lots of people prefer the Nieuport for aesthetics but I think the Hanriot is consistently underated! This was actually the first WWI plane that I looked at and said WOW! Pfalz D.III - at times stunning and at times like an ugly duckling too me. And in a slightly more workman like fashion: Sopwith Pup - well proportioned and everything seems to have a place and purpose. Fokker D.VII - I don't know that I'd ever call it beautiful in the classical sense. Just simple, purpose built and highly functional. Perhaps more than any other plane from the time it captivates my imagination. Each photo, description, drawing, etc. seems to have something new to offer my imagination and sense of history of 1914-1918. Many thanks to all who make this list what it is - I get disappointed when I get home and don't find list messages waiting!
