This subject has been exhaustively covered in CCI and OTF, complete with forensic models and trajectory diagrams and learned comment by a pathologist. So much was discussed, over multiple issues, that I have forgotten the conclusion. Actually, I seem to recall it was favorable to the contention he was killed from the air. Even the most recent issue of CCI has an update on the triplane seat, which was un-punctured by bullets and making it very difficult to account for a shot from below. Hardcore devotees of Manfred's demise should avail themselves of these issues; if anyone has interest, LMK and I will search these out over the weekend and reply on Monday. I sort of like the "grassy knoll" theory, personally. Message-ID: Hi Gang, Reading Killduff's "Illustrated Red Baron", it says that the official autopsy revealed that the single bullet that killed MvR "entered thru the anterior fold of the right armpit and exited thru the front of the chest just under the left nipple". It also states that the exit wound was "slightly higher" than the entrance wound. This would make one think that he was shot from below or as some have theorized, that he was hunched over and shot from behind. Also, photos taken of MvR after the landing show no signs of his being beaten. So, unless there was a massive coverup of the incident, he was most likely killed by either ground fire or Brown. Some credible eyewitnesses to his being shot after the landing would certainly have come forward by now, one would think. I bought it some months ago for a few bucks from a German anthiquaric bookstore but had no time to read it yet. I browsed its pages now for some quick reading about the crash of MvR and found some interesting details: 1) There was more than just one bullet hitting him since another bullet hit his boots 2) MvRs face showed no bullet holes but teeth was broken and forced in due to the impact on the guns 3) After a week in Poulianville the wreckage was burned on the nearest salvage yard. That book got published in 1970. Will read it an share details with you freaks out there in thr world ;o). Beware of the Hun in the Sun!
