In this article the author has photos of the all tubular rudder, but mentions that many Jenny"s had wooden rudders. Also, I found an isometric drawing of a Jenny structure in the magazine. The drawing clearly shows the ribs and diagonal struts, definitely not tubing. With the leading edge 1" wide, the ribs must be 1" wide also, ant they have a straight taper back to the trailing edge. The diagonals are smaller, like 1/2" square wood strips full size or 1/32" for the model. So, with all this info, I think I have a solution. Any way to prvide some type of heavy metal wire and a jig so the modeler
could form his own rudder?

Paul

No big deal for the modeler. Nieto's plan shows the leading edge which is
1" x 5/8" wood. The trailing edge is is a piece of sheet metal bent into a
Vee shape 1/2" x 1/4".  For the model I will use a 0.015" diameter steel
rod. Modeler bends it to shape from plan. There are 3 horizontal ribs, and
2 diagonal struts. I will use basswood for these. It will be a simple to
build rudder.

If it was another family member who built 'em, then I might be inclined to be lenient - and I was referring to models where the whole job was done by an outside source. In my opinion, when it comes to figures (and let's face it: many nowadays are pretty much needing minor cleanup and no assembly or sculpting) it is the PAINTER who brings the figure to life. For that to have caused a whole family to quit the club shows incredible undersight on behalf of the club leadership. This might explain part of why the N.O. local contests and Regional was not as successful as might have been hoped for. >We also don't allow any of these 'pre-painted' models. > Of course, DB might disagree wioth me about the local club after the last > contest. O.K., I'm puzzled. I didn't see that N.O. had any pre-painted models. And if you are talking about the red-ass I gave you about your Nie.17 - hey, IIRC I said that I was content with Second behind it. Your decals were quite excellent, and overall, your build was cleaner than mine. For the record, I bitched to you and not at the contest. > Sorry if some of y'all had less than positive experiences competing. It's not > like that everywhere. Hey, we all question the judging. It's natural. And I consider that I have a fairly relevant opinion: once again I am Head Judge at the Mobile, AL/ Battleship U.S.S. Alabama Contest on March 10. I try like hell to get things right and preserve a sense of fair play. I don't have to worry about nepotism at our show - I'm one of the very few members who build anything - and everything that I take to our show is for display purposes only. Unlike some clubs and their Head Judges, I never enter my own show when I am HJ. It looks better, for one thing. Anyway - I need to get some sleep. DB nl: Legends of the 20th Century: Peter Sellers.
