This year I celebrate Christmas onboard the R/V Ramform Viking off the coast of Baluchistan, which is the part of Pakistan bordering to Iran. Weather is like a good European summer, except that it only rains once a month. For a Norwegian it is a bit different from what we expect for Christmas, but we are preparing for a traditional Scandinavian celebration tonight. Tomorrow we will have US/British dinner and the day after it is time for a Polish menu -to prove that we are a multicultural crew, end of Ramadan for our Pakistani visitors will be celebrated just after Christmas. Still, we have to keep production going all the time, so there will be no excesses now or when entering the new year. There was a thread on signal/flare pistols a few days ago, the ones we use at sea to contact vessels when they do not answer on the radio looks just like a large revolver with a thick barrel. One cartridge is loaded at a time like a shotgun, and you simply pull the trigger to fire it. Brass? cartridges are color coded so you know if you are firing a yellow, green or red one. You may have noted that on WW1 aircraft, flares are held in a rack outside the aircraft or the flare pistol is mounted so that you fire through a tube. The reason for it is obvious, firing one inside your own aircraft in the air is an mistake you are unlikely to be able to repeat.. I experienced once on a different vessel that the master who was in a hurry to get a trawler to turn away from us loaded, locked and fired the flare before he noticed that the wheelhouse window was closed! Things became rather unfriendly in there, when my fire-fighting team arrived at the scene, the flare had got stuck and burned out behind a radiator after buzzing around. The wheelman was in a state of shock, uttering something like "I nearly shit myself", the master was staring at the flare pistol and calculating the trajectory from the scorch marks all over the wheelhouse. Took him some time to formulate the incident report, which stated just that the flare went off to early - no reason given. To return OT, I would like to thank all the list members who shared their research with me, helped me get hold of kits to add to my loft insulation, inspired me to get the Albatross DV done, and last but not least entertained with news, humour and discussions. This must have been one of the best years for WW1 modelling, and next year has a lot of promise, Roden/copperstates Gotha families, and more good stuff from Eduard and Blue Max/Peagasus in both 1/72 and 1/48 scale - only thing missing is Tamigawa releasing an R-flugzeug.
