Since then, I've planted them in my yard. This year I bought a bunch of seeds to spread around a bit. The flowers are not often grown in the United States, but my wife's 96 year old grandmother (whose brother went to France and Germany as a doughboy in 1918-19) remembers that everybody used to grow them. Does anyone else on the list grow poppies? If you live in the American South, you can plant them now so they'll get established. Next spring you'll have a good crop of these wonderful, red flowers. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 09:55:47 -0600 From: "Matt Bittner" To: "wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu" Subject: Re: Underneath the wings WAS: 1:28 DH-5 Message-ID: <200011101555.HAA14130@scaup.prod.itd.earthlink.net> On Fri, 10 Nov 2000 10:45:39 -0500 (EST), Alberto Casirati wrote: > FWIW, I would sand all 1/72nd wing undersides smooth, regardless they are > vacuum-formed or not, as any rib recess would look overscale to me. From what I gather, in 1/72nd, the only thing that should be done "in scale" is to creater the "ribs" via color only? Make the ribs lighter, then? That means that *all* (minus vacs) 1/72nd wings on the underside should be sanded smooth then, yes? Very interesting... If you feel the new ribs would benefit from light sanding after they have been added to the wing surface, then painting them later is the only alternative. But using ribs cut from pre-painted Superscale clear decal film should succeed in keeping the model's rib within scale limits. Have a good weekend ! German registration was D-260. Later registrated E15, RR-40, D-260 again before registered to Norwegian owner Carl Julius Holm in Trondheim 05.06.1930 as N-44 for Nordenfjeldske Flyveruter AS. Registration changed to LN-ABH 20.06.32 as national code LN replaced N. Transfered to Gidsken Nilsine Jakobsens company Nord Norges Aero in July 1932. Engine fell off aircraft while in the air over Balestrand 27.06.34. WW1 pilot Birger Johnsen managed to do an emergency landing while Ms Jakobsen climbed out to hold the engine cover away from pilot and act as a counterweight. Aircraft sold back to Germany in 1934, ultimate fate unknown. I have sent some scans offline to Ken and Neil, the reason for posting this on the list is that I have tried to find information on Birger Johnsen, he is supposed to have flown on active duty in WW1, but I have been unable to prove it. Later the flew in military/civilian service for various Chinese warlords, involved in US airlines and disappears completely from the public after publishing his biography. When you consider that, even at $25, this kit is only $4 cheaper than the (non-Profipack) Eduard Roland C.II, which has amazingly good molding, there is no comparison for quality. In fact, the mold quality of this alleged "kit" makes the worst thing I have ever seen from Blue Max loook like Tamigawa in quality. Mark, Another documentary that is showing at least out here on the west coast, is the "Danger Tree" This is one Newfoundland families biography of this period in history. Out of five sons only two survived through to the end of 1918. Another very well done program that if anyone catches it on TV, is well worth watching. >I plan to do something with my six year-old daughter to mark Remembrance >Day. We have started taking my son to the local memorial to watch the Remembrance ceremony and parade. Since we live in a small town "White Rock", its very up close and personal. You can hear snippets of various families telling stories in hushed tones to there kids as they wait for the ceremony to start. You hear mention of Great Grandfathers, Grandfathers, Fathers, Uncles Aunts etc. Its at this time that you begin to realize the price that countries like Canada paid in the wars and peacekeeping duties during the past century and even up to this day. Its a very humbling experience. My wife and I tell our son both our family's stories, which always leaves him half in awe. The most poignant part of the ceremony though to me is after its all done. As people walk up to the memorial to look at the Wreaths, most of the kids and some adults put there poppies into the ground around the memorial, such that if you came back an hour later the little postage sized lawn around the memorial is covered with poppies. I'm sure this is done elsewhere, but I had never seen it until I came to Canada. Ray ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 11:15:09 -0800 From: "David C. Although they are not native to Vancouver Island, they were planted and now grow in profusion around the Air Park where I keep my aeroplane. I will be marching in the Remembrance Day Parade tomorrow, but in a new guise - as a St.John Ambulance Therapy Dog Handler, with uniformed canine alongside. I will then become a 'veteran' again after the parade for the various receptions. My most memorable November 11 was attending the ceremonies in Prague (Praha) in 1996; that was the first 'open' commemoration after the departure of the Russians. Uniforms and medals that had been hidden in the attic for 50 years were again worn proudly and it was strange to be a uniformed Canadian standing saluting alongside the Polish Attache, with his unique, square-topped hat. No doubt he thought my round hat was strange, too... I met a Czech pilot who started on 'ops' in the "barely OT" Letov S-328, then Amiots with the Armee de l'Air and finally Wimpies and Libs with the RAF. He had five rows of medal ribbons, and the middle medal on the middle row was the Air Force Cross - that says a lot about his war service! Lest we forget! And all the best to our Polish members.
