It looks well done, at least from the one image provided. Other members of the list have built it, in particular Dennis Ugulano. Go to his web site to view his. One thing to keep in mind if you stray toward the AAMS camp - the wings will need sanded down, as the rib representations are quite a bit. Whenever I start mine, I'm thinking of sanding the wings completely down, and replacing the ribs with styrene "tapes". Maybe wartime quality wasn't really very good, and in combination with air-forces without so much experience, you get this kind of thing. Incidentally, the Phönix D1 was much more popular in Sweden, probably because of the engine similarity to the Albatrosses. Our pilots didn't like guns mounted under engine cover like in A-H planes Italian Balilla was better than Polish built. Ansaldo was first plane built in Plage&Laskiewicz. It was about 80 kg heavier than Italian ones. All engines were bought in Italy. In early 20s we had engines produced most probably during the war, over three years engines stayed in magazine. From 159 engines 37 were withdrawn after control in Sept. 1922 classified as unusable. > Our pilots didn't like Ansaldo Balilla. Do you mean the Italian-built or the Polish-built ones ? There are a bunch of OT books that I thought some of you might be interested in. I'm sure some of you have most of these already. I know I do (hah!). This posting is for those of you who don't have enough in your library. Please respond to: Kilduff, Peter (UnivRltns) Later! Brent ==================================================================================================== Aviation and Naval Book Sale The following aviation and naval historical books are for sale or swap at the prices noted (or realistic cash equivalent) before I put them up for auction on-line. Aside from swaps and except where noted, there is a one-time $5.00 postage & handling fee in the U.S. for the initial purchase. (Overseas orderers pay actual registered air mail or insured surface mail rates, and domestic orderers requiring UPS, FedEx, or other private carrier cover full cost for mode desired). I purchased a small library of books on World Wars I and II aviation and naval topics in Germany and, in addition to what I'm pulling out of my attic (also included here), I am disposing of materials no longer pertinent to my collection. The German books are arriving at the rate of a package per week. Items ordered from this list will be held for one week; if payment has not been received by that time, they will go on the next week's list and then to on-line auction. This is an opportunity to obtain good books at fair prices before the auction process drives the prices higher. My main interest is German aviation of World War I and I am always looking for books (including Windsock Datafiles) and postcards for my collection. I will consider direct swaps or swap & cash arrangements for most items listed below. Tell me about your proposed swap by e-mail. Please let me know if you want to receive further listings (and especially if you do NOT wish to receive them). Please e-mail me back with any questions or call (evenings) at 860-223-4092. Peter ========================================================= WORLD WAR I AIR & NAVAL POUR LE MÉRITE ZEPPELIN COMMANDER BIO: "PETER STRASSER, DER FÜHRER DER LUFTSCHIFFE" [Peter Strasser, the Leader of the Airships] by Thor Goote with an introduction by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, (Breidenstein Verlag, Frankfurt, 1938), 288 pp., 6" x 8-3/8" size, 39 photos, hardcover in EXCELLENT CONDITION (which looks as if it has never been read!). This German text biography of the WW I commander of the German naval Zeppelin force is based on official records, interviews with colleagues and Zeppelin crash survivors, as well as private materials and photos from the Strasser family. It details Strasser's career and wartime flights, including his last flight aboard L.65, when he was killed leading his airship force into battle. Strasser was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his leadership and development of the airship force, as well as his personal bravery. There is only one published biography of Peter Strasser -- this is it and it's a master work. $50 P-L-M AND OTHER FLIERS' AIR COMBAT ANTHOLOGY: "FLIEGER AM FEIND" [Fliers Against the Enemy] compiled by Werner von Langsdorff, (Verlag C. Bertelsmann, Guetersloh, 1934), 356 pp., 4-3/4" x 7-1/2" size, very well illustrated with photos of all 71 fliers whose commentaries appear in it, as well as of other events; hardcover in EXCELLENT CONDITION and in rare ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (which, of course, I have placed within an acid-free DJ cover; DJ has very minor wrinkles and tears, but the volume itself is in great condition). This German-language anthology of experiences of 71 German Army and Navy airmen provides a thorough overview of World War I air operations -- in fighter, reconnaissance, bomber and low-level attack aircraft, zeppelins, seaplanes, observation balloons -- it's all here as recounted by the men who experienced (or survived) the incidents described. Contributors include: Pour le Mérite fighter pilots Adam, Bäumer, Berthold, Boehme, Boelcke, Buddecke, Christiansen, Gontermann, von Greim, Immelmann, Kissenberth, Menckhoff, Lothar AND Manfred von Richthofen, von Röth, Schäfer, von Schleich, von Tutschek, Udet and Windisch, as well as many other "big" names and some very interesting "unknowns." $45 12-VOLUME OFFICIAL GERMAN HISTORY OF WW I: "DER WELTKRIEG 1914-1918" [The World War 1914-1918] compiled by the Military History Staff of the Reichsarchiv (E.S. Mittler & Sohn, Berlin, 1925-1939), 12-volumes, each 8" x 10" in size and containing an extensive map case, ex-lib. in original hardcovers and all in little-used, very good to excellent condition (aside from modest rubber stamp impressions and cataloging notations) as follows: Vol. 1 (1925) 719 pp. with 12 maps & many battle plans in the text; Vol. 2 (1925) 390 pp. with 14 maps & 11 battle plans; Vol. 3 (1926) 427 pp. with 7 maps & 11 BPs; Vol. 4 (1926) 576 pp. with 10 maps & 5 BPs; Vol. 5 (1929) 643 pp. with 18 maps & 14 BPs; Vol. 6 (1929) 500 pp. with 21 maps & BPs; Vol. 7 (1931) 493 pp. with 40 maps & battle plans; Vol. 8 (1932) 666 pp. with 39 maps & BPs; Vol. 9 (1933) 519 pp. with 34 maps & BPs; Vol. 10 (1936) 706 pp. with 45 maps & BPs; Vol. 11 (1938) 545 pp. with 37 maps & BPs; and Vol. 12 (1939) 606 pp. with 26 maps & BPs. The set occupies over 25 inches of bookshelf space. Compiled from then-available records in the Reichsarchiv in Potsdam, which was heavily damaged in WW II, when much of this valuable material was lost. Without a doubt, "DER WELTKRIEG 1914-1918" is the most complete, well-documented history of German military operations on all Fronts (accompanied by excellent maps, orders of battle and other appendices) in WW I. Volumes' indices refer to a broad range of German units, commanders, noteworthy personnel and many other aspects of military activities throughout the course of the war. In addition to official records, personal accounts (by people then living) add to this official German history of WW I. Many individual volumes (especially the early issues) are readily available, with and without maps, but it is very rare to find the 12 volumes -- and in such fine condition. (This is the only time I've seen them together in 40 years of collecting military books.) The 12 volumes weigh a total of 55 lbs. (packed up) and will be well-packed in two sturdy boxes, shipped via whatever means the purchaser desires, with all charges paid by the purchaser. No discounts apply and basic cost, exclusive of shipping is: $1,050 3-VOLUME SAXON WW I HISTORY: "SACHSEN IN GROßER ZEIT - GEMEINDVERSTÄNDLICHE SÄCHSISCHE KRIEGSGESCHICHTE UND VATERLÄNDISCHES GEDENKWERK DES WELTKRIEGES" [Saxony in the Great Time - Saxon Regional War History and Patriotic Memorial Work of the World War] compiled and edited by Maj.Gen. (ret.) Artur Baumgarten-Crusius and Col. (ret.) Johann Edmund Hottenroth, (Lippold Verlag, Leipzig, 1919-1920), 3-volume set each 9-1/8" x 12-1/8" in size; 432, 464 and 450 pp., resepctively; hardcover with color illustrated front covers in very good to excellent condition (aside from missing inside back endsheet in one volume and minor tears in another back endsheet, some very minor cover wear and rubber namestamp in one volume). This World War I combat history of men and the various units of the Kingdom of Saxony is a rare set that is rarely found complete and in such nice condition. It covers all aspects of the war and includes many (great!) maps, a profusion of photos and other illustrations, copies of documents, orders of battle and other charts. The set it, quite simply, THE most complete account of Saxony's role in WW I and the service of its fighting men in the Army, Navy and Air Service (Immelmann, Baldamus, et al.) -- all the big names are covered, as well as many interesting folks otherwise lost to history -- on all battlefronts. Nice section on Saxon military awards, too. No discounts apply and basic cost, exclusive of shipping is: $230 MASSIVE VOLUME OF SWABIAN GROUND & AIR UNITS AND COMBATANTS: "DIE WÜRTTEMBERGER IM WELTKRIEG" [The Württembergers in the World War] compiled and edited by Lt.Gen. (ret) Otto von Moser, (Belser Verlag, Stuttgart, 1927), 767 pp., 10" x 12-3/8" size, 70 photos of wartime leaders, 860 photos within the text, 24 color plates and 260 black & white sketches, many maps and an organizational chart tipped into the back of the book, bibliography; hardcover in EXCELLENT CONDITION and in rare ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (which, of course, I have placed within an acid-free DJ cover; DJ ha sminor wrinkles and tears, but the volume itself is in amazing condition). This is a first edition of a massive German-language anthology that covers all aspects of the WW I activities and operations of ground and air units of the Kingdom of Württemberg. Covers activities year-by-year on all Fronts based on personal experiences and official archival material. Listing of Württemberg's Pour le Mérite recipients shows that the first junior officer to receive the high award was Oberleutnant Erwin Rommel (later "the desert fox"). Also has color photos of other Württemberg awards and information about them. Massive organization charts contain extraordinarily well-defined deployment information about Württemberg units. Of all the regional memorial books I have seen (e.g. Bavaria, Rhineland, Westphalia, etc.) this volume is the most detailed. Absolutely a gem! No discounts apply and basic cost, exclusive of shipping is: $150 POUR LE MÉRITE ACE ERWIN BÖHME'S LETTERS: "BRIEFE EINES DEUTSCHEN KAMPFFLIEGERS AN EIN JUNGES MÄDCHEN" [Letters From a German Combat Pilot to a Young Woman] compiled by Prof.Dr. Johannes Werner, (Koehler Verlag, Leipzig, 1930), 207 pp., 5" x 7-3/4" size, frontispiece photo and a painting (by Prof. Kohlschein), as well as a necrology of Böhme's friends; hardcover in EXCELLENT CONDITION and in rare ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (which, of course, I have placed within an acid-free DJ cover). This is the German text of the war letters of Leutnant Erwin Böhme, 24-victory ace and protégé of Oswald Boelcke (with whom Böhme collided in the air, resulting in Boelcke's death; Böhme's guilt feelings are poured out in letters to his fiancée). Böhme and Manfred von Richthofen were also close friends, as the letters note. Book concludes with official death notice and condolences on Böhme's death. Very hard to find this book in such uusually find condition with dust jacket. $45 SIGNED COPY OF POUR LE MÉRITE BOMBER COMMANDER AUTOBIOGRAPHY: "BREMSKLÖTZE WEG!" [Chocks Away!] by Hermann Köhl, (Sieben Stäbe-Verlag, Hamburg, 1933), 228 pp., 5-7/8" x 8-7/8" size, well-illustrated with photos and maps; hardcover, in very good condition aside from some minor cover staining. The autobiography of Hermann Köhl -- World War I bomber squadron commander who earned Prussia's highest award for bravery, the Orden Pour le Mérite -- the German-language text covers his combat flying, escape from a French POW camp and early trans-Atlantic flight with Capt. Fitzmaurice and Baron von Hühnefeld. Also details Köhl's work on a "flying wing" design with maximum streamlining. A flyleaf inside the book notes that proceeds of this special limited, SIGNED edition of the book would be used to help pay for Köhl's research and experiments with "flying wing" aircraft. (Flyleaf contains a printed facsimile signature with which the ORIGINAL autograph can be compared.) EXTRA FEATURE: Original owner of the book clipped Köhl's obituary (+ 8 October 1938) from the newspaper and pasted it on an inside page to make this copy a truly complete story of the flier's life. $125 POUR LE MÉRITE 80-VICTORY ACE RICHTHOFEN: "DER ROTE KAMPFFLIEGER" [The Red Combat Flier] by Rittmeister Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, (Verlag Ullstein, Berlin, 1933), 262 pp., 5" x 7-3/4" size, 22 photos, hardcover in very good to excellent condition (aside from fading on the spine). This German-language text is "THE" edition of the Red Baron's memoirs to have, as it is complete and uncensored (unlike previous editions) -- including the morosely candid "Thoughts in a Dug-Out" chapter that clearly shows the combat fatigue that surely led to Richthofen's fatal mistake in his last air fight. Great photos and comments by other people round out this significant book. $20 MORE POUR LE MÉRITE ACES IM RICHTHOFEN GESCHWADER HISTORY: "JAGD IN FLANDERNS HIMMEL" [Fighting in Flanders' Skies] based on the official unit war diary kept by former Lieutenant [later General] Karl Bodenschatz, (Verlag Knorr & Hirth, Munich, 1941, 5th ed.), 213 pp., 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" size, 95 photos, 4 document facsimiles and 2 maps; FIRST EDITION (softcover) in EXCELLENT CONDITION (aside from missing one blank page) and in rare ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (which, of course, I have placed within an acid-free DJ cover). This is the German text of THE book on Manfred von Richthofen's command of the four fighter squadrons that made up Germany's first Fighter Wing [Jagdgeschwader I]. Richthofen's adjutant, Karl Bodenschatz, wrote the first part of the book, commenting on JG I's air combat operations during the last 16 months of WW I. The second part of the book is JG I's official war diary, which is LOADED with information about the Jagdgeschwader's unparalleled success. The many photos of Richthofen and his protégés are among the best on the subject. Maps and other historical elements add full dimension to the "red baron" story. $65 BAVARIAN POUR LE MÉRITE ACES, ET AL.: "BAYERISCHE FLIEGER IM WELTKRIEG - EIN BUCH DER TATEN UND ERINNERUNGEN" [Bavarian Fliers in the World War - A Book of Deeds and Remembrances] compiled by Max Zeidelhack, (Verlag der Inspektion des bayerischen Luftfahrwesens, Munich, 1919), 308 pp., 7" x 9" size, over 200 photos drawings and maps, hardcover copy in very good condition (aside from minor rubbing on the cover and spine; interior is immaculate). This German-language FIRST EDITION book is "THE" anthology of *50* first-hand remembrances of pilots and aircrews of the Royal Bavarian Flying Service in World War I. Book was produced by the Office of the Inspector General of Bavarian Aviation. In addition to famous Pour le Mérite fliers -- Adam, Dostler, von Greim, Kissenberth, von Müller, von Mulzer, von Roeth, von Schleich, von Tutschek, Walz -- also has two-seat recce and multi-engine bomber mission stories, daylight and nighttime flights on Western, Eastern, Palestine and other Fronts. All (and more!) are seen in the profusion of photos in the book. $125 RARE WARTIME EASTERN FRONT MEMORIAL BOOK: "MAZEDONIEN - EIN ERINNERUNGSWERK FÜR DIE MITKÄMPFER AUF DEM MAZEDONISCHEN KRIEGSSCHAUPLATZ" [Macedonia - A Memorial Work for Fellow Combatants in the Macedonian Theatre of Operations] produced by the Armee-Ober-Kommando, (Reimer/Bohsen, Berlin, 1918), 137 pp., 5-5/8" x 8-7/8" size, includes photos, maps and fold-out table, semi-hardcover ex-lib. copy in very good condition (aside from a piece of adhesive on the cover, some rubbing on the back cover and library ownership and de-accession rubber stamp impressions on the inside). This German-language anthology of various aspects of operations on the Macedonian Front consists of 12 chapters, each written by a different participant (or AOK Staff officer), covering such topics as historical background for the military operation, assessment of the indigenous population and allied and enemy forces, meteorology, topography, medical services, and graves registration. Excellent overall background on this area of World War I combat operations. $45 AIR WAR IN PALESTINE: "VORTRUPP PASCHA - DER ERSTEN EXPEDITION DEUTSCHER FLIEGER IN DIE WÜSTE" [Vanguard Pasha - The First Expedition of German Fliers in the Desert] by Richard Euringer, (Hanseatische Verlag, Hamburg, 1942), 396 pp., 5" x 7-1/2" size, hardbound in very good condition (aside from minor wear spots on covers). This German-language text is thinly-veiled fiction by a wartime Bavarian pilot who flew with "Vortrupp Pascha," the German expeditionary force supporting the Turkish Army in Palestine. Interesting details about very early morning flights and late evening flights to avoid the desert heat and its effects on air currents and other operational aspects of early air combat operations over the Sinai Desert. $20 GERMAN FLYING FAMILY: "GOTTLOB ESPENLAUB - EIN FLIEGERLEBEN" [Gottlob Espenlaub - A Flying Life] by Wilhelm Radenbach with an introduction by Gen. Friedrich Christiansen, (Thienemanns Verlag, Stuttgart, 1943), 195 pp., 6" x 8-1/2" size, profusely illustrated, ex-lib. hardcover in good condition (with some water staining). Author Radenbach, a World War I flier, wrote this German-language account of the Espenlaub family of 6 brothers involved in flying between the World Wars and during WW II -- and their sacrifices (e.g., brother Hans at an airshow in 1930 and brother Albert in air combat for the Afrika Korps in 1942). Gottlob, on whom the story centers, met his fate testing a rocket aircraft. Photos show various celebrity friends of the Espenlaubs and other aspects of their contributions to aviation. $15 GERMAN NAVAL HEROES ANTHOLOGY: "HELDEN DER SEE - HELDENTATEN UNSERER MARINE 1914/1918" [Heroes of the Sea - Heroic Deeds of Our Navy 1914/1918] compiled and edited by Walter Heichen, (Weichert Verlag, Berlin, ca. 1930), 160 pp., 6-1/8" x 8-5/8" size, well-illustrated, hardcover in very good condition (aside from minor edge rubbing). German-language anthology of varied WW I naval actions from the beginning of the war to the scuttling of the High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow, including: Graf Dohna and the "Möwe," Weddigen and U 9, commerce U-Boat "Deutschland," Graf Spee at the Falkland Islands, Müller and the "Emden," Mücke and the "Ayesha," Battle of Jutland, various U-Boat actions, and Scapa Flow. Good narratives and excellent photos. $35 WW I GERMAN UB-49 WAR DIARY: "UBOOTSGEIST - ABENTEUER UND FAHRTEN IM MITTELMEER" [Submarine Spirit - Adventure and Voyages in the Mediterranean] by Paul Ritter and edited by Gerd Bock, (Koehler Verlag, Leipzig, 1935), 246 pp., 5-1/8" x 7-3/8" size, 23 photos, drawings and maps, hardcover in very good condition (aside from front cover stain and some minor bumps, plus original owner's name written inside). German-language account of the wartime cruises of UB-49 under the command of Pour le Mérite-decorated skipper Kapitänleutnant Hans von Mellenthin. Very rare enlisted man's account of U-Boat warfare, based on the war diary of Maschinist's Mate Paul Ritter. Includes many excellent personal photos. $35 U-62 AT WAR: "U-BOOTE WESTWÄRTS! MEINE FAHRTEN UM ENGLAND 1914-1918" [Submarines Westward! My Voyages Around England 1914-1918" by Ernst Hashagen, (Mittler & Sohn, Berlin, 1941), 158 pp., 5-3/4" x 8-3/4" size, 21 photos and 2 maps, hardcover in EXCELLENT CONDITION and in rare ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (which, of course, I have placed within an acid-free DJ cover; DJ has minor wrinkles and tears, but the volume itself is in great condition). German-language memoir of the skipper of U-62, which had a very successful career in sinking ships off the coast of England and Ireland. $45 U-BOAT BARON AT WAR: "U-BOOT IM FEGEFEUER" [Submarine in Purgatory] by Lt. Edgar Freiherr [Baron] von Spiegel, (Verlag Scherl, Berlin, 1930), 211 pp., 5-1/4" x 7-5/8" size, illustrated, ex-lib. rebound hardcover (with dust jacket art affixed to front cover) in very good condition (aside from typical marks obliterating old library rubber stamp impressions and some wear). German-language memoir by Kapitänleutnant Edgar Freiherr Spiegel von und zu Peckelsheim, a daring aristocratic WW I U-boat skipper whose exploits included capture and POW camp in England. Super photos! $25 SURFACE RAIDER 'WOLF' ACCOUNT: "DAS SCHWARZE SCHIFF - KRIEGS UND KAPFERFAHRTEN DES HILFSKREUZERS 'WOLF'" [The Black Ship - War and Surface Raiding Voyages of the Auxiliary Cruiser "Wolf"] by Lt.Cdr. Fritz Witschetzky, (Union Verlag, Stuttgart, ca. 1930), 320 pp., 6" x 8-1/2" size, 63 illustrations & photos, ex-lib. rebound hardcover) in very good condition (aside from typical marks obliterating old library rubber stamp impressions and some wear). German-language account of the WW I surface raider SMS "WOLF," written by the ship's fourth-ranking officer. The book is so complete that it includes the entire crew roster $25 8 WW I TORPEDO BOAT POSTCARDS: Small collection of original WW I postcard views of Kaiserliche Marine Torpedoboote.
