There was a good amount of OT models, nicely done was a series of 120mm figures, including the CellarCast Eddie Rickenbacker, some Verinden figures and others (pardon me, I realized I forgot to bring in a note-pad!) A few other figures in various sizes spread across quite a few exhibitor's tables. Decent mix of Allied vs Central Powers. One of the best (IMHO) armor pieces was a Emhar (?) 1/35 Female Mark V tank, at the lip of a German trench. The Tank had the "crib" on the foredeck from CellarCast, and I think most of the "dress-up" bits from CellarCast like treads, etc. I think the sandbag trench walls were also from CellarCast. Two Germans were trying to lay some grenades beneath the tracks and stay away from the machine guns at the same time. Very Nice Piece! The Best OT model was a shadowbox diorama of a British Officer alone in his dugout following early action in the Somme. It was titled (as I recall) "We regret To Inform You" and the officer was writing letters. On the table was a pile of identity discs, and at his feet, personal effects to be shipped home. Someone commented that it wasn't muddy enough, but I thought as an officers home, it was quite right. A very, very nice job. As I said, I forgot the notepad, so I have no details on who, what, etc. http://www.cs.net/panzer/ http://www.cs.net/panzer/shows/wac2000.htm I spoke briefly with the man who operates Hawkeye Designs. He said more WWI a/c mods were going to be done, but nothing firm yet. And he was thinking of making some of the bits from the Hawkeye Fokker Dr.I kit available as an update/correction set for the Eduard/Roden kits. See: http://users.sgi.net/~ftduq/ for his webpage. Message-ID: <001701c01ad5$dc1517e0$2a93aec7@com> My New Friend as of today is a 1:1 Fokker D.VII at the Southern Museum of Flight. I got to see it under restoration. It is one of them D.VII's with the red&white fuselages and upper-wings and the black chevron and bird. They painted the loz un the undersurfaces of the wings - good Munsell matches. The cowl louvers were hand-formed. Really cool, even though it is a replica. It was owned by the guy just north of Birmingham who died. I keep forgetting his name, and that bums me out because he seemed to be a very cool guy.. The engine in it was a Gypsy (IIRC) so the driveshaft was way up high into the radiator. Now, since it doesn't fly, the plane can be made to look more realistic. It was also damaged in an accident. But for me, she is love at first sight: a big ol' plane that will be displayed to allow people to keep in mind the horrible events that occurred. And the guys who have been working on her have done a splendid job, fabricating parts like the cowl panels, which have hand-beaten louvers in them. I'll tell you guys what: the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham is full of neat surprises. Today, on my way to the club meeting at the museum, I was on my motorcycle (with an ot twin-engined Japanese from the second half of WWI bungeed on my back seat) and got a good look at the museum's two new acquisitions: an A-12 (the single-seat SR-71), and an F-111 Aardvark. Mock us all you want in Alabama, we have one damned-good air museum going on here. Also they are expecting a Camel replica that is also 1:1. Apparently a ready-to-fly replica, one of two that was traded for a real Camel. Back to the D.VII, I was asked about what I thought of it. The red was a tiny bit bright in my opinion, and if I REALLY wanted to pick, the loz pattern on the fuselage might show a bit thru the red, but hey... To see it is a real treat. It was used in 'The Blue Max'. So there are some sloppy bits here and there. It is cool. And then I was shown the prop that they are going to display it with. It's from a Liberty engine, or something, but it just doesn't have the lines of the Axial prop. So of course... SO OF COURSE I OPEN MY BIG YAP. And I mention building an Axial prop for the thing from scratch. Perhaps I was just flapping my lips. But I think that I could laminate and carve a prop with the machinery that they have at the Museum. So do any of you know where I can get a large-scale drawing of an Axial so I might consider how to cut the laminate blanks. I won't be using more than their bandsaw, my drawknife/spokeshave, large plane, and clamps. It would be a strictly woodworking project, but I think that the effort is worth it with how good the replica looks; a realistic Axial prop would compliment it nicely. I am thinking: to hell with the Puny Scale Wars. They ALL suck! 1:1 is definitely the way to go! In love with a bird, and about to go lookin' fer girlies... I'm trying to get as much info and have found lots of usefull info on various web sites and this list. I don't have access to any old copies of Scale Modeler and saw an archive list that seemed to have some great articles. Maybe someone on this list has some of these articles and would be willing to photocopy them for me. I'd be happy to pick up the cost. I'm especially interested in painting and detailing techniques. AFAIK, November-December is still the release date for the Camel, I don't know about the box art being posted anywhere Eduard has a site at www.eduard.cz Merrill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 14:03:50 EDT From: Otisgood@aol.com To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Retry; Eduard's Camel Message-ID: In a message dated 9/10/00 2:27:32 AM Central Daylight Time, ethomas6@bellsouth.net writes: > Sorry, couldn't resist. Several years old, but still a good long piece on the restoration and first flight of Hyde's Jenny. I think the other segments were on the restoration of gold leafing in Russia; carousel animals; a sailing ship and some fancy 30's car.
