As far as I know most aircraft engines turn clockwise (view from the pilots seat) or counterclockwise (view from the mechanic who turns the prop to start it up). The rotating mass was a problem pilots faced when flying the Dr.1. In right turns its nose pulled down while in left turns its nose pulled up. This effect was even worse on the Camel which had a heavier engine = bigger mass. Well, I have read this only in books indeed and know the effect a bit from my favorite flightsim RB3D but this does not necessarily mean that the sim is correct. Perhaps there is an active camel rider on this list who can confirm my statements? The Dr.1 drivers all seem to be dead because they choosed the wrong color for their cowl... If Voss only knew what waves he makes on this list... Just imagine to travel back in time, go to the shed where a young pilot named Hans Werner Voss is tinkering on his favorite toy - the famous 103/17... "Herr Leutnant?" "Ja, was...???" "Herr Leutnant, may I suggest you to paint your cowling YELLOW." "Why the heck shall I paint that damn thing yellow?" "To avoid the quarrels of the year 2000, Herr Leutnant." "$%&???@{0}!???" "See, Herr Leutnant, in the year 2000 there will be an eternal discussion about the color of your cowling. You MUST paint it yellow, Sir, or there will never be peace again among the members of the WW1 mailing list. But DON'T FORGET to make a picture of your yellow cowl, Sir. We need it as an evidence." ...and in a turquoise-blue-green flash you vanish. Voss, still confused, maybe thinks that his brain played a trick on him. Perhaps he shouldn't have swallowed to much of that stuff they call Champagne the night before?... Anyway, he continues his work... maybe in a flash of memory he comes to the idea to paint his cowl yellow... But then, as he is high up in the clouds again: "Damnit - I forgot to make a picture... but of what shall I make a picture? Hmmmm..... And what the heck is a mailing list? Aaaahhh... there is a Tommy, travelling alone..." And so we will never find the answer to the everlasting question: Was it yellow - or was it olive??? I dipped the first decal into water, to begin lozenging.... and it dissolved into a blur of colours. It appears they forgot the carrier for the colour (sorry - I dont know much about decal production) because all I have are paints on paper. Anyway, I switched to an aftermarket set (the kit supplied decals, particularly for the underside, looked too light anyway), used the kit decals as templates for the new ones, and all went well. I am not making any changes to the dimensions, etc.... just building as per instructions. At this point, the lozenging is done, the fuselage is masked for painting the white/black bands, and I have almost finished the rib tapes. Message-ID: <39B14E9C.B54649A8@bellatlantic.net> The seats had plywood bottoms and sheet aluminum or plywood backs mounted on tubular steel frames which were part of the welded steel fuselage structure. The seats were often covered with thin horesehar upholstery and covered with leather of whatever color was available but usually black, however painred seats and even lozenge fabriccovered seats have been quoted if not documented. Seat belts were usually of leather and were mounted to the adjacent fuselage framework by steel cables or rings.
