Thanks TC, I have several of the Goodman, Ellington and Sinatra on the old LPs. If they aren't readily available in CD, I guess I could tape them and play them that way. BTW, your listing of the "Glenn Miller, The Secret Broadcasts" intrigues me. Never heard of it, not that that means anything. Can you tell me what it is. I've got a 5- LP album of the original Glenn Miller orchestra, has the picture of a WWII USAAF Officer's hat with a 50-mission crush on the cover. Bought it at the BX in England in the '50s. Only played it about 2 or 3 times to make tapes. I've got some good CDs of other stuff, like Cole Porter's songbook, Night and Day, but it hasn't worked out to well - - Shirley Horn comes in with "Love for Sale", followed by Louis Armstrong with "Let's do it (let's fall in love) and then, Ella Fitzgerald with "Anything Goes", and so on . . . . .my attention tends to wander. (We subverted communism with jeans and rock 'n' roll, and subverted the Nazis with swing and jazz.) "Recordings" is a 3-CD set of the Army Air Forces Band - the band Miller set up in the service, and with which - had he survived - he would have revolutionized swing music. Done from V-discs and re-mastered digitally. I found mine at the Virgin Megastore. Costs about $25. Is the > subminiature set you are referring to the smaller one that I think > Waldron offers? I like your idea of using it to make masks. > > Mike K. > Yes it is. I have both sets: the miniature and the wildly expensive sub-miniature set. Great for making all sorts of stuff, and I figured that Post-it Note adhesive is very low-tack, but buffed down on the decal paper, they have good adhesion. Then I painted the dots and immediately lifted off the Post-it. All that was left to do was put on the ol' magnifying visor and get to it. All this was helped by the Jack Paar documentary on the telly. He has got to have been one of the coolest guys that was ever on TV. The logos are just big enough to look metallic, and really too small to read, but I reckon that's about right. Now the tricky bit: I have added the center top section of the wing. I hate the little molded struts that they provide! But I got it to sit O.K., and maybe I'll rig that tonight. Adding the outer panels will be a bitch, even though I have added pins to help align and strengthen the joints. Adding the tail boom assembly should be fine. For me, anything at all by: - Stan or Garnet Rogers - Tom Waits - Holly Cole (particularly her Tom Waits songs CD) - Paul Simon (mostly, post-Garfunkel) - Latvian choral music (this is a problem - I start singing, stop modelling) - Chariots of Fire soundtrack - Dutch Mason (on cassette.... cant find any CDs) Dave Z ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 14:50:48 -0400 From: Mark Vaughan-Jackson To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: background noise Message-ID: >E writes: > > << So fess up listee's. What's in YOUR CD drive? >> >> > My coffee cup. . .I thought it was a cup holder honest ;-) Actually I model in front of the boob tube most of the time - Tuned to something at least vaguely (and I use the word advisedly) historically based - The old Piece of Cake series , Sharp's Regiment series or at a pinch Wings on Discovery. If not, and I can remember to put the music on, it's usually something I have to write a story about: Lots of Celtic stuff, Piper Eamon Dillon, The Bothy Band, Figgy Duff. Classical mood usually draws out the Beethoven horn concerto or something by handel. Or it could be anything from reggae to Satchmo, Robert Johnson, Led Zepplin, Guess Who, Police, to Flanders and Swann or Tom Lehrer (while deliberately not drinking Diet Coke). My music is as haphazard as my modeling - any style, any scale, any nationality I ain't too picky. bringing the topic back OT and speaking of television, if they made a series out of Robinson's book Piece of Cake, why couldn't they have made a series out of the book's (in my opinion far superior) prequel, Goshawk Squadron. . .much more enjoyable I'd think. But it's so damned work to paint all the individual lozenges that I guess that it's easier to get yourself lozenge decals and learn how to use them in the process. If not, try to choose a non-lozenge paint scheme. > 2. the wing ribs look really pronounced - is this > typical? I guess they can be sanded down They don't look too bad once they're under a decal or paint coat. I'd better focus on getting rid of the "fabric weave" of the fuselage, if you like to taste some plastic dust. > 3. I have to start a collection of paints, > probably 1-2 bottles at a time. Are there any > colors that I should start with, I mean basic > colors that I will always use? Olive drab, insignia red, a strong yellow, a cobalt blue, black and white. You can mix them and get what you need. The olive drab can be done too with the basic colours, but as you'll need some almost everytime, having a bottle will speed up the process. Once you make enough experiments you'll become more sophisticated and try different colours and brands. Remember to get enough paint thinner as well. HTH!
