First of all make sure said partner has a hobby of her own. In my case I model, she quilts which mean we each take an interest in each others work at least to the point of smiling encouragingly (if, admittedly a little vacantly) when the other proudly presents the latest finished project. Second by tacit agreement we both turn a blind eye when it comes to amassing the tools for our hobby. . .I don't complain about mountains of fabric and unfinished quilts, she remains mute on the teetering stacks of unbuilt kits and the graveyard of half built kits. And most importantly never ever swap war stories on how much each of you spend on said hobbies. As an additional aid, practice stuffing more than one kit in a box. I have a friend who while still at the hobby store can fit three kits into one box, sprues, instructions and decals. That way you're set up for the 'but I only bought one kit this time,' line. Sure you sacrifice the box art on a coupole but it's a small price to pay for peace. I do, however, agree whole heartedly with Sharon (no warning shots required here). While my wife is not interested in my modeling, she is something of a history buff. Talk about the person who flew a particular plane and she's all ears. The other thing is my five year old daughter Alex who has already expressed an interesting in "Daddy's toys." Last model show we picked her up a small Starfix lawn dart which we're planning to build over the summer holidays. Particularly when it comes to our children never let it be said that models are just for those icky boys. I have an accomplis. My oldest daughter knows when a package arrives in the mail to take it directly to the workbench area and to stash it. This has only failed a few times. Mostly when the postman arrives late and my wife goes out to get the mail or the daughter isn't home to intercept the package. You can also get a job out of state and have everything mailed there. The only problem is when you move back home. You have to explain why your kit collection doubled while you were away. This also isn't foolproof. I recently bought $100 worth of stuff from Copper State Models and had Eric send the order to Minnesota. Unfortunately my wife found the Visa bill. "$100 to Copper State?!" she exclaimed. In my most soothing voice I attempted to explain how frugal I was by getting two kits for that price. "YOU ONLY GOT TWO MEASELY AIRPLANES FOR $100?!?!?".... It went downhill from there. She was deaf to my explanations of resin, limited run, quality ain't cheap etc. For a moment I was glad I was in Minnesota. This reminds me of another point. Why do certain mail order companies have to stamp their logos all over the package? A plain kraft brown carton would be much easier to explain. This is a fun thread! Later! I remember coming across that book when first doing the background research on my Wolff article for OTF. Thank God our Bob Pearson and Peter Kilduff offered to give the article a good read-through before I sent it in.... I'd have been so embarrassed to have perpetuated the myth of Platz designing the D.R. I, and the whole Fokker feud thing.... But then, that's one of the things for which I prize this list. We're a well-read and often difficult to convince bunch -- and that has got to be good for the hobby and the field as a whole! It's very Mercury retrograde of you. ;-) At the risk of incurring wrath and the accusation that this forum is another place where a man cannot say what he really wants to say because there are "girls present", I would just like to point out: it is too easy for ANY of us to make some frigging generalization that has no place being made among people who are friends, and who like each other. It always shocks me that people think manners ought to be reserved for how we behave in front of strangers -- and at "home", so to speak, we can behave just as poorly as we wish. Manners should be reserved for the people we care about, BEFORE being used for strangers. So, if we use our manners for our kinfolks here, we won't make sweeping generalizations about where someone comes from (For example: well, he's just a Yank, don't you know, and wasn't raised right....) or what gender one happens to be (girls tie fishing lures better than guys because they pay attention to details...) or how well-read they happen to be (can't you SEE that's a silly source to use, you git???) Any of those things can be said in other ways, without being a backlash thing. Let's all face it -- in this day and age, FEW of us taste our words before we spit them out, and then we are astonished that people didn't read our minds, to know what we REALLY meant. and if I have *anything* about which I will climb into the pulpit and rage, that is it.... Where did this soapbox come from, and how on earth did *I* get on top of it?? ;-) Climbing down now, Sharon At Wednesday, 12 July 2000, you wrote: >In a message dated 7/12/00 6:58:56 AM EST, sljenkins@tac.com.au writes: > ><< HOW can you then make such a sweeping generalisation!! >> > >Once again: you two, and other female modelers I know, *never* were in the >generalization!!
