Nothing with 2 wings, but one OT related thing. There was an A-10 and the pilot had a practice round from the 30mm cannon. That is a huge shell, best part of a foot long and 2" around at the base, a cannon in every sense of the word. After hefting it, I have a much better appreciation of what a Spad 12 pilot would have had to go through to load an even larger round while flying and keeping an eye on a movng enemy. sp E-mail smperry@mindspring.com Web Site http://www.freeyellow.com/members8/wwimodeler/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jun 2000 00:40:42 -0400 From: "Jack Gartner" To: Subject: Re: Spad Bracing Stays was: Re: Note to Matt B Message-ID: <020f01bfcddf$0b553d80$db371c18@tampabay.rr.com> ----- Original Message ----- From: Bob Pearson To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Saturday, June 03, 2000 11:32 PM Subject: Re: Spad Bracing Stays was: Re: Note to Matt B > Jack, > > The underside of the top wing is left as is .. the underside of the bottom > wing is in chevrons, the bottom of the tailplane is in shamrocks. But sadly, there are also a LOT of wieners who create trouble just because they can. However, I much prefer the tenor of this group. In a way, it's kind of like IPMS, if you think about it. Everyone gripes about how IPMS judging, etc., sucks because we have a national organization that tries to be all things to all modelers. Thus, separate focused societies like AMPS rave about how great they are. To me, that's just because everyone there is only interested in armor. That's all well and good but I much prefer checking out the art of modeling as a whole to one very specific type. Sure, I build only a/c, but I can still appreciate and learn things from builders of great ships, scifi, autos, etc.. That's the reason I still go back to RMS. If I see anything OT, I'll try to photo it - but I am heading to the southern part of France, so I won't be around alot of OT stuff. Believe me, if I had planned this trip, it would include Paaschendale, Verdun, and alot of other places. So I will hafve to suffer in Provence, Maseilles, and the Riviera. If the film place does same-day stuff on Sunday, maybe pics of my Fokker D.V and E.III (incorrect, and I don't friggin' care neither!) will be available to Allan on Monday - and to the rest of you. I guess that if you have coments on them, you should send them to me direct. Because after Sunday afternoon, I'll be unsubbed. It's a xerox which I have had for about 2 years now. I "think" it may be from a Polish book or magazine because when my friend xeroxed it, one word was picked up on part of the next page "Spady". It shows a port side full view, top full view, plus insert for top of lower wing of green/white chevrons (I'm assuming from your earlier post the underside of the lower wing would match?), and then a box showing a green field with LITTLE JOE lettered in white and two white and black dice underneath (presumably from the starboard side of the fuselage). The only thing about it is that the green seems dark to me. I'd assume that an Irishman would want a bright Kelly or Emerald Green as the proper color. Second, this has got to be the best of times with regards to WWI modeling. Between all the fantastic building going on (Otis, Peter, and everyone else), the Albatros cook-up (with the wealth of information that's available), and the availability of lots of WWI era kits, along with the information that is exchanged so freely on this list it's just a great time for us all. During my teens it was pretty much Model Railroading and then throughout my military career it was mostly that OTHER war's subjects. Just prior to my retiring from the Army two things caused me to change almost exclusively to WWI topics....the intro of the DML Dr.1 and Shane pointing me to this list. The membership keeps growing, the info gets better and better, and all is taken with a good dose of humor. My thanks to you all ! I sent those images to him at @9pm CST Sat night and they're already up. I admit Holtzem's is not original, but I promise to do one with lozenge wings as soon as I can. The "Silbergrau" is a homemade mixture of aluminum, white and dark blue, all Model Master acrylics (new version). I can't give you the exact proportions, I just kept mixing until it "looked" right to me. The weathering was done using a method in FSM. First, spray the whole thing with Future and let dry overnight. Next, I mixed Testor's (regular enamel, the old stuff) gloss brown and black with thinner and then applied a thin wash to the surfaces I wanted to detail. Let it dry overnight (yes, really), then go back over it the next night with a small brush dipped in thinner to remove the excess wash until you get it like you want it. The Pfalz was so "bland" without the weathering so that's why I decided to do it. I don't usually weather OT subjects but this one seemed to need it. Thanks for all the kind words. They mean a lot coming from such a talented crew. Way to go Russ! I actually have never met a scale I didn't like and truly am amazed at the skill, time, and dedication this group devotes to building OT models. Kudos all around Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome all newbies, and a BIG THANKS to Allan for hosting this wonderfully addictive list. Paul G.
