I strongly suggest using the new SMER kit decals - they are the right size (and the D.H.2 roundels are the right size to use on the S.E.5a if you are doing the McCudden option - as well as not outlined). The wings are very thin, and overall the effect is of great delicacy, which is right for the D.H.2 and not possible to completely achieve with the SMER kit even if you turn yourself into a candidate for a rubber room like sp did. There's no way you can get the flying surfaces of the SMER kit as thin as the BM kit's are to start with. The kit is definitely a *minimum* of seven times better than the SMER kit, so the price is reasonable for the result. Oh yeah, I did use the BM engine after a lot of fiddling, and it looks much better in end result than the SMER engine would have, which I had thought of doing. Now on to the rigging...... This one installed right the first time. There are several programs, and the scanner has far more capability than the old Mustek 600EP had, and more capability than the 600CP claimed to have, though the Mustek was more user friendly in terms of operation. However, I will balance that against the fact that this thing scans about ten times better than the Mustek did - including the one test scan I was able to accomplish on the 600CP. To get the pictures on my pages to the quality they are as scans - i.e., pretty close to the original photo - I had to do a *lot* of tweaking (which was where the Mustek was easy to operate once you learned you had to do this) with the histogram, brightness and contrast, hue and saturation, sharpness, etc., to get the end result. With the new scanner, the original scan gets the picture right if it was photographed right: sharp, colors right, exposure right etc. So balance the easier tweaking on the Mustek where you *have* to do that with the more difficult tweaking on the Scan Ace where you don't have to do that too often and it comes out ahead for the Scan Ace. Overall, I would say that the Scan Ace is a better value at $69.95 than the Mustek at $49.95 if you want better scans and more capability of doing things with the scanner. For me, the ease of scanning a typed page and getting it to my word processor means all the pre-computer scripts can now be saved. Due to improvements the 8210e is sometimes available for $299.95 at many places and I do believe that it is really one of the most reliable made. I am very happy with it and would have paid the $299.95 but fortunately for me some one entered a 1 instead of a 9 in the advertisement and the store felt obligated. I felt good about things because I did tell them what I knew and we were "both sides" honorable in the transaction... It installed as "Plug and Play" almost instantly and has done everything advertised in a respectable manner. As far as I know copies made have been readable on all the machines I have sent them to. (What is this thing with people using only one or two letters for their signature? Oh well.) Thanks for writing. And for the info. My only interest in kits would be if the parts themselves or the instruction sheet would give clues about what's inside the observer's cockpit. I did get a couple responses to my observer's floor questions, mainly supporting your vote for wood, one saying it didn't matter because it would be covered in mud. (I have email relationships with a number of the list members, and they write to me directly like you did, and I don't track the list digests very closely, except as concerns my project.) But I had to put the floor aside anyway while struggling with some serious structural integrity issues when I tried to pull the piano wire to a knife edge at the rear of the fuselage and trim it to length. I got that problem whipped yesterday and will be back to the observers cockpit area soon. Did you see my latest question (or did I even post it?): did the observer hold his camera over the side to take pictures, or was there a hole in his floor (and the fuselage below) that the camera mounted in. I see a square on the underside of the Salmson in one drawing, and in some WWI movie footage it kinda looked like the observer "installed" the camera at his feet (at least he was bend down messing with something for a while after the camera was handed to him). Even though most people aren't real familiar with the Salmson 2A2, generic info about two-seaters used for airial photography would be helpful. The model has been painted overall silver using a can of Krylon "Short Cuts" spray paint. It's labeled as a hobby/craft paint and comes in a 3 oz can. This stuff has one of the finest grains I've ever seen in a silver/aluminum hobby/craft paint. Dried quickly considering the humidity over the last day or so.
