My one complaint is the kit doesn't have the fish scales decal - most likely that will show up in the Profipack. BTW: with all the time I am spending in Computer Hell, I was given the Grand Prize last night: AOL5 lost my address book!!! So, would those of you who correspond with me off-list please e-mail me so I can get you back in? If any of you keep jokes that go around, and have one from me, please e-mail me the address list. A friend has already sent me one from a few months ago, but it's not completely current. This would be a big help if you can. TIA Also, if there is anyone here who is a Computer Genius, and can tell me why it is I cannot use my clipboard (cut/paste) function on the net to bring info from a page down to a file in my computer, tho I *can* use the function in the computer between say WordPerfect and WordPad, etc., and in e-mail to cut what was said and put in another one, your insight would be deeply appreciated - particularly if you know the cure!! AOL and MS have been no help on this one, and since I use this function for research (some of which pays the bills) it is really important to get it solved. Seems the 4 AFC engineers > werent against taking to the aircraft with hacksaws, they modified their Snipes as well. You're right - although many of the mods were also standard on other squadrons, or were done by the AP before hitting squadrons. The cut-away to the right-hand side of the top decking is a classic that had to be done for months by the AP as the manufacturers drawings didn't get changed quickly enough. The additional windscreen segments to either side of the standard "Avro" screen were also standard issue from the APs for a while, having been initiated by Naval 1. The blisters you mention were used by a number of squadrons, seemingly at the whim of the CO or EO. I've not been able to find a pattern digging through the PRO records. Certainly the US squadrons (17 & 148) had them too. Also, if you look at the Italian-based Camel squadrons (28, 45 & 66) they had some machines with even fancier (locally produced) scoops, designed to push more air into the carb (this was one of the key factors limiting the power available from rotaries) and keep the crap out. Interesting subject, mods to Camels. Folk think of the Camel as being a built to a "standard", but in reality there were all sorts of tweaks, mods etc done in any number of ways; either at the manufacturers, APs, repair parks or squadrons. Gosh - that went on a bit - sorry :-) Andy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 13:48:34 -0400 From: Matthew Zivich To: "wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu" Subject: Help:paint remover Message-ID: <38F4B6F1.F50896AF@svsu.edu> What's the best enamel and acrylic paint remover for plastic models? I use clear brake fluid - none of the nastiness of Easy-Off and not so pricy as the fancy stripping kits. It works very quickly - just spill some on your car if you have any doubts - but it doesn't attack plastic. The SE5 pictures were taken at the Shuttleworth Collection. One of the lads at the Brampton Model Club I belong to works at Old Warden, and once a year takes us on a 'behind-the-scenes' (and under the ropes) tour of the collection. Always a popular evening out. So it's thanks to Sam that the pictures are on the site. I also have a few pictures of the stripped Bristol F2B at the RAF Museum I could scan if anyone is interested. I think their 4 color, especially the upper, is dead on. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 14:47:43 -0500 From: Brent_A_Theobald@notes.seagate.com To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Help:paint remover Message-ID: Howdy! >Thanks for the reply. I've heard of oven cleaner being used but have been >hesitant because of the noxious nature of the stuff. If you don't mind, just >how do you use it? I have a piece of scrap plywood I use to protect the lawn out back. Then just spray the model down with the oven cleaner. I let it sit for about 15 minutes or so and then bring it inside clean it off with running water. Some enamels take two or three attempts, but it all comes off. I don't think the oven cleaner is as caustic as it used to be. Or it could be our oven is dirtier nowdays. Some people like to use bleach to remove paint. So far I have had less than good luck with it. Brake fluid is REALLY nasty stuff. I don't know what to do with it after I strip my parts or how to clean it of my parts. The Strip A Kit stuff does work very nicely, but it is also a little spendy. Good luck! Brent ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 2254 **********************
