I will say that the Breguet looks a hell of a lot better than the Mystere kit that they just released. It's a piece of crap, but since it's an aircraft type that I like, I'll do the extra work. >> I am not talking about the accuracy of outline (at least not regarding the Breguet), but certainly am talking about outline accuracy with the D.501. It's things like decals that are about 40 years out of date quality wise, and the general effort just to get things to fit together and look like it was meant that they do so. As far as the nearly-sf subject is concerned, I am really sorry to hear that, but it certainly isn't unexpected. And yes, if it is an aircraft type I like, I will do the extra work. Out side of the Cl-class and the Brisfit, most WW1 2-seaters are targets. (just my opinion, guys, if you love 'em that's not a problem!) Not that some of the targets aren't interesting, I just won't go as far with one of them as I might with something else. Digi cameras are still a generation or two away from doing anything really worthwhile. I use a very simple system, and you can see the results in my pix here at the website: three draftsman's lamps with 200-watt bulbs, over my desk, with a light blue posterboard for backdrop. You want the lights on *only* while shooting since the lamps aren't rated for 200 watts. Use one as the overhead "key light," one to either side for side light - you can move them back and forth to combat shadows, move the keylight similarly. Put the camera on a tripod with an 80A filter so you can shoot under incandescent lighting, set the f-stop at f22 (the filter will "add" an f-stop to what you have) to maximize depth-of-field, and shoot. It works, and it doesn't cost a bundle (the lamps are $12 each at a Staples or such, the filter is about $25 at any good camera store, a lightweight tripod is less than $30) I use a standard 50mm lens (just like I do for all my air-to-air work). After you have shot a few rolls you will have control of what you are doing and can get reliable results. My wife actually writes some of the checks for my stuff. Ask John Roll. All you have to do is drop a more expensive hobby. In comparison modeling will look positively thrifty. In my case it was restoring cars and drag racing. Busting $1500 transmissions and investing $$$ in engines makes $50 - $100 resin models pocket change. In truth I think I enjoy the modeling more. Less adrenaline, but much less frustration (and grime). I'm told comparing modeling to hanging out at the nudy bar is a good tactic as well. Have a good one! I shoot my pictures outside, in the shade, light blue cloth backdrop(I also have a grey cloth for shooting subjects with lots of blue), 35mm SLR camera on tripod, mag filters, self timer, viewfinder shutter closed, smallest apreture setting, timed exposure set on whatever the camera's light meter says to use. Sometimes I'll take a second shot with one more notch of exposure just for comparison. Lance, I don't know how hard it is for you to get outside(maybe you live on the 10th floor of an apartment building or something), but I shoot under my carport. I drape the blue cloth over my BBQ grill, and set the model on the little side condiment table that my grill has. I bring the camera out already screwed onto the tripod with the filters already on the lens. It's a lot easier than fooling with lights and whatnot. It's so easy, I've even taken some quick pictures in the early morning before work. The reflectors are a good idea, but I often forget this step for some reason. Causes me to lose undersides in shadow. Here's some of my results, which I get consistantly, hardly ever getting a dud picture; http://pease1.sr.unh.edu/Images/Thomas/models.html with a few more here; http://www.xnet.com/~tmblweed/WWI.html Fwiw, the Alb D-III was taken at 6:30am on a very rainy, black overcast morning, with no reflectors. I also know a trick or two for best use of depth of field which I'll share after you get comfortable with the basics. Hth. E. No, this is not really true. The best digital cameras produce excellent photographs, particularly for modelers. The depth of field rivals that of pinhole cameras; which is a whole 'nother subject.
