I have no idea on the percentage towards completion, but I would guess that I am halfway thru the cockpit on each. I am stalled building map tables for the Aeroclub Re-8. Oops, hate to go ot, but that little GAZ-67 was incredible. Switching back to OT, the turnout at Quad Cities was a little low on OT content this year, three Mark IV's a Mark I in the armour department and mostly Matt's planes, tried to talk Bob into bringing some of his scratchbuilt WWI planes in 1/48, but we just got too busy with the show. 47 vendor tables and I managed to pick up some good OT stuff, maybe built in time for our Regional event in May at Matt's place. Picked up a Dakoplast Sikorsky, a Russian Mgebrov armoured car and a Renault TSF from Commanders Series Models. Some Aurora kits were going for great prices, a DH-10 and Gotha for $5 each and a small pile of Albatrii and D-VII's for a few dollars a pop. Ugly Mikes's Models had Eduard Alabtrii, Niueports and Sopwith Triplanes at $9 each. Plus a HP 0/400 from Airfix. All in all a pretty good time. When I built my last one, I combined the ESCI 13 with the Revell kit. Use the Revell top deck because the ESCI has blobs up there for guns. Use Aeroclub or resin vickers and the results are pleasing. As far as accuracy, remember, this kit was produced in the 60's. Scale construction in the wings and general scale approach to the fuse, tail and rudder using dowels to represent the steel tubing. I have taken some liberties in the fuse but the effect will be scale when the covering is in place. Planned color scheme: Franz Buchner's late OAW machine in Jasta 13 livery. The werewolf's head has already been painted on canvas by my dad who is a far better artist than I am. He suggested making copies of his work and applying them to the fuse. But that event will be a long time from now, since I've barely scratched the surface with this one. I have already painted up the 4-color lozenge fabric for the topside of the wings. I chose this late model Fokker because there is only the topside lozenge to worry about; the undersides were light blue. I know that there is a lot of controversy as to whether these OAW Fokkers had blue undersides, and the new Datafile Special really didn't help me in this matter, but the photos I've seen of Buchner and his mechanics in front of the D.VII shows a light color clearly painted up to the leading edge on the LG wing and the bottom wing. That's the clearest evidence that it was overpainted. Anyway, expect a completion date within the next two decades. 2. DML 1/48 Fokker D.VIII. From gargantuan scale (as Matt put so aptly off list) to simply big, I'm doing this one as an E.V from Jasta 36 with blue cowl and white band with star as shown in the Profile and Datafile. I wonder if the star is red...I have a nice little decal sheet from INSIGNIA with some red stars for a Polikarpov R-1, and the stars would work so nicely on that white band! I also wondered if the tail was overpainted blue or was simply left lozenge. I don't recall if Jasta 36 was in the habit of overpainting tail surfaces, but the pic from the 3/4 rear seems to show a solid color. It could simply be reflected light from the varnish. I'm using Americals 4-color for the fuse and tail (where else on an E.V?) and Polly-S for the wing and other solid olive areas, and a medium blue for the cowl. 3. Blue Max 1/48 Pfalz D.XII. Started 4 years ago and dragging along. Currently back in the box waiting for more attention. Color scheme will probably be Max Gossner's of Jasta 77b. 4. Toko SSW D.III. Also started but not completed. Obviously my middle name is procrastination. Hope I haven't bored you into oblivion with my ramblings about colors...but being on this list really gets me interested in actually finishing a model once more and doing it right. A big Revell D-VII. Started it a few nights ago. I've got the top wing in the right shape, but still in need of sanding. I've also removed the bottom of the fuselage and the turtle deck to fix the fuselage. Got the insides all lozed (CSM upper), and paled with two coats of white wash. Started building the tube structure from .035 styrod. This is gonna be the grand opus D-VII with all the bits I can muster. And it will be in Dallas. DB is working on a big Camel, SP is doing a big Spad. Anyone else? I think we need to seriously consider DB's idea for forcing a split in the large scale catagory. What say you guys? I've also got 5 Revell 1/72 Alb.D-III's on the bench as well as "the ten thousand seams". nu; a Eduard N.17 for a customer. nuat(next up after that) Lonestar DH-5, a zig-zaggy Spad from DML, maybe a Spad A-2, and hopefully I'll have time to squeeze in a Eduard D-Va to bing to Dallas. Also on the bench is a scratch-built ot bipe which I won't name, as well as a very OT HB-C1 scratch build. Guess I'd better get off this pc and get back to the model bench. Message-ID: Anyone who thinks Canada is this world-power backwater full of nice polite (but ineffectual) people, need only look at the following to realize how far up it they had their head: For the past several weeks here in "the media capital of the world," publicity around The Annual Major Event was saying "it's going to be quick and to the point, and as proof we present the fact there will be none of those annoying musical producations that eat up time and do nothing." They were right. There were none of those. There was just Robin Williams and The RCMP Rockettes in the best singing and dancing production in I can't remeber how long, giving all of you Up There "The Credit You Deserve." I thought it was great!! And then, there are moments that make it easier to work in this cesspool and have some hope on occasion: Three years ago, I had a pitch meeting with a young development exec at Paramount, who - when the meeting was over - offered me the copy of a script he knew he could never get made at Paramount. "I'd still like to hear what someone like you has to say about it, though." It glared at me on my nightstand for three weeks (I mean, it was reading someone else, and no money involved, and what if it was terrible? - he liked it and I wanted to do business with him.) Finally, I read it. It was like fingernails across the blackboard of my frontal lobes. It reminded me so much of my first marriage, where I was so unhappy doing what everyone else thought was right and I couldn't do it if I didn't get drunk the night before and drive off to work still in a hangover the next morning; thank God I managed to find the way to say "I quit." The script was about not being able to say that. It was stunning, and it was the first draft by a goddamn *television* writer who did *sitcoms* for chrissakes. It was "American Beauty." Every year, this hellhole does something like give this an award, or something brainy like "Shakespeare in Love" and I am once again on the merry-go-round of "they do like good stuff sometimes." If you haven't seen it, go. And, just to bring this OT, Conrad Hall, son of James Norman Hall, member of the Lafayette Escadrille, later chonicler of the group, and later co-author of "Mutiny On The Bounty," won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for "American Beauty." And as a final note, what a great show - just shows that The Old Hollywood was then and always will be better (the show was produced by Richard Zanuck, son of Darryl Zanuck, founder of 20th Century Fox, maker of many OT films). I loved that opening bit with Billy Crystal - goes to show what a million dollars well-spent (i.e., a Writer had a Good Idea) can buy. Plan on taking the day off from work tomorrow to just "play hookie". I really feel the urge to dive into an Eduard DVa and start working up the cockpit. Probably will do it as MvR'sD2059/17 with the all red fuselage and mauve/grn wings. Next up will be Udet's black Albatros DV in 1/48th... I look around my new hobby loft and realize that I need to put together a paint booth or some kind of exhaust system. How do others handle this? I know there are some commercial paint booths out there. Would like to try to build my own.... That's the clearest evidence that it was overpainted. A question to you Lyle: does this photo show the tailplanes of the D.VII? Were they blue or white? And how can you comment the Buchner's D.VII profile painted by Don Greer and published in Squadron Signal book? I am about to start DML's D.VII and I would like to finish it as Buchner's plane. And what's on the work bench? 1: (OT) Pölz' Ju 87R-2 trop (1/48 Hasegawa) - just finished; 2: (OT) Thornell's P-51B (1/48 Tamiya) - prop blades to be varnished and glued; 3: (OT) McConnel's Sabre (1/48 Academy - my first jet) - decaling phase (only ca. 243 stencils to be applied :-); 4: Udet's SSW DIII (1/48 Eduard) - to be repaired (aghrrr... the whole top wing went off during room painting); 5: Bishop's Ni.XVII (1/48 Eduard) - interior finished, fuse and bottom wing attached; 6: (OT) Urbanowicz's Hurricane I (1/48 Hasegawa) - to be build; 7: Buchner's D.VII (1/48 DML) - to be started; 8: Thieffry's Ni.XXIII (1/48 Eduard) - to be started. Message-ID: <010b01bf97dd$fe0b8e40$4640a8c0@ssp.salud.rosario.gov.ar> All right, this will be long and painful: 1- Completed fuselage of Albatros DII from a heavily modified Esci DIII kit. The rest of the parts are there but I just don't feel like painting them. I started this kit about 2 yrs. ago. 2- Completed fuselage & modified wings of Pegasus Taube. Working on the little parts attached to the main subassemblies (radiators, exhaust stacks, kingposts, &c.) I'm still dissapointed on how the underwing braces look. Maybe I have to re-do them again. 3- Sanded fuselage halves of Pegasus Roland DII one of them flattened down thanks to a freak accident. Got myself a new kit to replace this crunched part.. 4- 1/35 german stormtrooper firing a machine gun, unpainted but asssembled as far as possible without disturbing the paint stage. In the works are another of these running and another one that I changed some limbs yesterday afternoon- He was throwing a grenade but now he's pointing. Along with the soldiers, I'm building a diorama base deep enough to have shell holes and miscellanea debris. No, no, no! I won't build a skeleton! 5- Sanded down wings from MAC Fokker EIV. They'll be mated with a scratchbuilt fuselage of a Fokker EIII, yet to be built. 6- 2 1/48 (I confess, Matt!) Czech Masters pilot figures, already painted and nearly finished. I changed its position and refined the bulky appareance. 7- lots of plsatic shavigs, plastic and resin dust, sprue, glue puddles, paint smears, ruined decals, stained photocopies, stray parts and styrene bits. If someone someday join this toghter, I'm sure that it'll result in a 1/28 model.... AFAIK, Buchner's planes were in standard JG II colors, which is blue fuselages and tails with different colors for the nose. The Squadron version is not bad; Buchner's plane was definitely in a lighter shade than the rest of the squadron. I think the green should be darker for the checkerboard and nose, though. Since your a friend I'll refrain from passing this remark along to the Superintendent's log cabin on the 14th floor of mountie headquarters. Though there's a good chance they've already seen it. ; ) Brad now off to straighten my seams, and these heels... they're killing me.
