Something should come up. Looking at the feedback for this seller, I see many repeat customers and some comments about his descriptions being accurate and conservative so, I figure you are not dealing with a weasel here. That doesnt, of course, mean the item is genuine - he, too, could be mistaken about authenticity. I will let other list members comment on the item itself - I may be an ebay "veteran". but I am not an expert on cloth. Message-ID: <20000308205636.56141.qmail@hotmail.com> Me sir, I haven't built anything ot for about seven years. As to why it's a sad tale. I had a collection it had taken twenty years to assemble, even then mostly ot but with a second string strong on Spitfires. I still have a lot of unbuilt Spitfires. I came home from work one day to be met by 'er indoors looking very worried, as it turned out worried I was going to kill her. A neighbours three year old had somehow got into the cabinet and trashed every single model. If you've ever wondered how you would feel if it happened to you I can tell you. It's grief. I felt as though someone had died. After a while though I realized that was not really an appropriate reaction and sat down to rationalise things. I made a conscious decision to build only OT and where ever possible in 1/48. As a result I buy far fewer kits, though I still reckon there'd better be something in this reincarnation mumbo jumbo if I'm ever going to finish them all. cheers Peter L ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 21:05:39 +0000 From: Pedro e Francisca To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: More profiles on the internet... Until recently I have been painting it with acrylic silver/gunmetal mixtures, but I have just started using a black or grey magic marker type pen. This rubs off fairly easily, but is held firmly with a coat of Klear/Future. Breaking strength is not a good guide to the size of line. It seems someone from the system: ns.ahold.cz decided to try to do multiple 'web suck' processes trying do download the entire content of the site - file for file. The end result was essentially a 'denial of service' attack on my machine. While I don't mind if anyone gets any or all of the information from the site, the way that this person tried to get the information crippled my desktop and prevented me from doing my 'real job'. I will re-enable the server at the end of the business day and hopefully whoever it was will get what they need off hours. Normally my system can handle any amount of traffic, but the system that tried to get all 580 Megs of the data from the website tried to do it with multiple processes, esentially bringing my poor desktop (an older workstation with the CPU power of a 486 but a GREAT graphics engine) to it's knees. My question is, how do you remove a vintage WWI era photo, without risking any damage to the photo, from the page of the photo album it has been glued to. I am in possession of some original WWI aviation photo albums. I notice that some of the photos have notes written on their backs. I can tell this because who ever wrote those notes pressed the pen a little hard and part of the inscription is visible as raised lines on the front of the photo. Some of the notes are pretty lengthy and I guess they would be telling a lot about the respective photograph. I am looking for advice on a sure-safe way to remove these photos from the album pages, so that both the photo and the inscription on the back will not be damaged. Any suggestions from those with experience and expertise on this subject would be greatly appreciated. If I had rare photographs that needed attention as you mention I would seek a professional. I might seek the advice if not the actual help of an archivist from a large library perhaps attached to a university or museum where restoration work is common. Another possibility would be an expert in photo restoration as well, perhaps found in a large art museum that might have an extensive photo collection. First of all, you will probably destroy the album pages themselves whatever you do. If this isnt a problem, I would select another photo from the album - one without as much historical interest or content, and try the things Lance mentioned above. Try to pick one which appears to have been glued into the book at the same time as the ones you are interested in - it will probably have the same type of glue. That was a lot of fun, but results in a real dog's breakfast type of collection. When I became interested in the modelling again a couple of years ago, I started out by doing only OT models. With the help of the many talented people on the list, I am slowly acquiring skills that I never would have imagined when I was a kid (though I am still the most ham-fisted person on earth). This makes for better models, but it is also slower work. Recently, I have been casting around for some other, ot - type projects to build at the same time as the WWI stuff so, when I just feel like slapping something together I can do so. I no longer enjoy doing that to the WWI stuff - I expect more from those projects. Currently, I am building the Eduard 1/72 Albatros (and loving it) and, on the side, slapping together an Israeli jet. The former will probably sit in my display case forever - the latter may not survive the next spring cleaning. :-) Dave Z ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2000 09:39:54 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu'" Subject: RE: Any 'pure-ists' out there? When asking someone for information on a subject, don't ask them for everything they have on Fokker Dr.I, this will get you nowhere, and your request will be ignored. Unfortunately, you have to "make your bones" by studying what is available and inquiring for more specific things. For example, if you were to ask for photos of Dr.I 115/17 they may be more inclined to help, or if you were inquiring which aircraft had "balanced" ailerons, and which didn't, they would most likely help out. They enjoy a "hunting party" as much as the next guy. Just tell them what you are up to. With Peter Grosz, I felt in some way, I was "paying my dues" to enable myself to ask him for information, which he has generously shared.
