Whether or not this project (as well as over a score of others) ever get completed before I kick off may be slightly less than even money...I offer accounts of my dabbling at least partially for comic relief. One of my motivations is that I've some lovely A/G night lozenge lying around, and nothing else it goes on, since I've already decided the Gotha will be an early G.IV day-raider. I'm in the same situation with a rare way out-of-production after-market decal sheet I picked up for an off-topic bomber. Sooner or later, I'll have to get a model just to use the cool decals. I contend that it is *theoretically* possible to build something that resembles a G.III from the Merlin chunks, but the process would be more like woodworking or sculpting than plastic modelling, and perhaps more protracted than scratchbuilding. I've got this insane (masochistic?) notion to try it using only refined kit parts (with the exception of the Contrail strut pasta) just to see what might be done. Of course, I'd have to at least scratch basic engines. And so it goes... Is it Rosemont that used to make wing blanks & if so, how wide are they and how much? :) Cheers, R. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 22:54:27 -0600 From: "Bill Bacon" To: Subject: Re: OT Contest News Message-ID: <000f01bf7127$69f21800$413c32cf@tcac.net> Congratulations, Well done. Candice Uhlir managed to suprise some knuckle-draggers who thought a blonde with a purse in the model display room was a recipe for disaster until she pulled out her once-was-a-Smer-kit Avro 504 (she can't get subscribed off her new ISP right now, so all of you will have to believe me when I tell you it was all the secrets all of you have so freely given away that resulted in this true masterpiece) done as the Old Rhinebeck Avro 504, and the Spin Ansaldo that's up on the site. I have to say, I remember a mere two years ago, when she displayed her first model at this show that she thought was good enough to be seen in public, and the difference between that and the 504 is a lot more than night and day. Peter Crow was there and took photos with his digi-camera, so I am sure there will be some shots available of this soon, and I am going to take some shots of it for a new page for her at the site. The winner in "Biplanes all scales" was Ed Boll's truly stupendous 1/28 Dr.I with a factory finish that had to be seen to be believed. (One of these days, Ed will learn how to turn on his computer - he's already got an ISP - and will get up here to the List. As good a modeler as he is is how illiterate a computer geek he isn't.) He set that down and I said "bye bye folded Tamiya sort of-OT biplane." There was also a very nice little Tommy-Morse S.4C done from the Wings vacuform that won. Managed to pick up an Eduard "Mailed Fist" Alb. D.V for $15 that will do the job for the Propagteam "Stropp" decals that should be here this month. I've been toying with the idea of doing a little pot-hunting, an activity from which I've abstained since 1983. I believe I may revisit the IPMS US nationals this year, too... Dallas, right? LMK... Suddenly got it into my head that I want to build one in 1/48 after visiting the OTF site's covre gallery. So, 1. an existing kit would be nice! 2. in lieu of that, decent plans, GA, and other relevant details. Doubtless comparison with other Alb. two-seaters would be appropriate.
