He could have helped carve the stone balls! I though the piano demonstration was unbelieveble, especially knowing how heavy those things are. The idea of a horse being sent in to a fort shows just how far back psychological warfare goes. High marks for this show. My father has some old dictionaries from France and he was showing me an illustration of a trebuchet, and this one had the bucket solution for the counterweight. In design it was very close to what the Frenchman came up with. Considering the target size, as opposed to a complete wall, I think both weapons were surprisingly accurate, after a few tries! :) Lyle ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2000 07:05:40 -0600 From: "Paul Schwartzkopf" To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Academic Help Message-ID: I need some help for a report for one of the classes I am taking. Poor dear boy, how little you understand some women! :-) I personally would infinitely rather spend a vacation to do something like this, than almost anything else -- besides, perhaps, mucking around a battlefield with an old map, or poring over archives full of old militaria. ;-) But then, the only vacation for hands-on stuff I could imagine besides building a trebuchet, would involve an internship at Old Rhinebeck, learning how to build a 1:1 scale Albatros capable of flight, that is indistinguishable from an original.... :-) It is ALWAYS dodgy to state what "NO woman" would or would not understand. For the past several months I have been reading the posted digests, and finally decided to join. I am slightly older than the list average (46), and probably fall more into the category of "kit assembler" than "modeler", although I have learned a lot from reading the proceedings here. I started rigging with HSP, but am now trying 34 ga. beading wire, heated in a flame to straighten. This seems to work quite well, and is thinner and more uniform than the HSP I have used. I model primarily in 1/48 because that's what I started with, and I can't see the little pieces of 1/72 as well as I might have when I was younger. I was interested in the recent thread concerning first and first OT model. The first model I remember building on my own was a slightly ot Aurora Boeing P12-E when I was around 7 or 8. I don't remember my first OT, except that it would have also been Aurora, and probably either the SPAD, Camel, or DR-1. I'll be in digest mode because I'm at work. I live a bit *off stream* so I have developed an eye for how to use bits and pieces. There is always mail order possibilities, but if you compare the price of a package of Contrail struts from somewhere with a box of toothpicks from our local store....... Also I find it more fun doing it the odd/strange/difficult way. If anyone wonders I took the copperthred out of a headlight relay. Quite useful and lasts for ever ! I understand if you do´nt recognise my name as a listeé. I have been *at it* once before, a little more than a year ago. Somehow I got *kicked* off for various reasons, binary related I suppose. I did´nt have any success in re-subscribing so I concentrated on "spying" on what was said through the archive. Anyway I managed to pick up some names whom I have been harassing ever since off and on. Mainly to brag about my extraordinary skills, but sometime even to ask for help. Which I always have got!! I would especially like to thank Steven M Perry for his patience when I loaned his datafile on the Albatros W4 (for more than a year). Although I doubt I will be posting so very much on the list, due to the fact that I´m a not so old fart and thus less experienced, (fewer OT books than most of you all) it feels great to get all your collected vicedom right into my mailbox instead of having to access it through the WWW. Like Barry said, throw away the engine and the wheels. The cowl will need some work, and the flying surfaces need to be thinned. Besides that the kit is accurate, but there is no cockpit besides p/e instrument panel, seatbelts and a seat. The decals look decent, and it comes with two options; Boelcke and Wintgens (I think - memory is goinnnnnn). It's a nice kit, but at retail is a tough pill to swallow. There's not a lot of kit for the price plus there's plenty of work involved. It's not apparent from the kit instructions or box art just where the attachment points areor what the function of this is. There is no kit part to match. Any suggestions as to just what this is and how to fabricate it? Also, I'm inclined to do the rigging before I assembly and attach the wheel/wheel strut assembly. Any suggestions there? Great to have another list member south of the Pyrenees aboard. As to the password, it shouldn't be there. I've also experienced some difficulties reaching IM in the last days but I managed to get there, even if it took some time. I'm sure Bob and Chris will fix it pretty soon.
