RK >> You're right, as usual, RK,, but all being right proves is you have been a wierdo for longer than you remember. :-) The fact is, the movie was made by George Roy Hill, a director who loved the topic (a WW2 Marine fighter pilot who flew around in those days in a 1929 Alexander Eagle Rock - an airplane my dad knew well if the rest of you don't), and he *specifically" had Goldman put the scene in because he knew it was "true" and he was trying to do the story right, but - just as Stallone isn't allowed by the great unwashed to be other than Rocky - the audience would not buy Redford losing the girl. FWIW, in his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade" (which I *highly* recommend to any of you who want to know what the movie business is *really* all about), Goldman says that Hill told him after the great disaster that they should have cast Jack Nicholson, because he had a dark enough persona the audience would have allowed the event without killing the movie. Believe me, I went to the movie with my then wife and her best friend - both of who were serious movie fans, and both of who tolerated airplanes because they liked me, and both of them *hated* Redford losing the girl. To this day, I hate the people who go "to see the crash." I was toasted on r.m.s. for telling the tale of kicking the daylights out of an "air race fan" who was turned on by Steve Hinton's crash in the Red Baron RB-51 back in 1979. When they pulled me off the worthless toad, there was a good chance he'd never speak or procreate again (due to where I had aimed the blows), and no one around me - all air race particpants - saw a thing. As far as I am concerned, that kind of fan needs removal. Permanently (and my only regret is it wasn't). Was talking with a volunteer at PoF Museum, and he remembered the 1977 accident that killed the Fresno Warbirds show, where a guy in an AcroSport was doing a "hammerhead stall" that involved going vertical till no forward airspeed, then kicking the rudder to the right, going over and recovering. Only the guy lost acquisition of the ground, and when he lost airspeed he wasd 45 degrees on his back; when he kicked bottom rudder he fell over into an inverted flat spin, at 1,200' AGL. I was there, too, with my then 10 year old daughter (a major airplane fan and PIC in the Grumman Tiger we had on long cross-country's - a professional pilot today) and we watched him impact inverted between the two major runways, about 100 yards from the crowd line. Talk about a great way to end a good time in an instant! To this day I will never forget being on Pylon #1 at Reno in 1979 when my good friend Steve Hinton crashed the RB-51. When he turned final he was at field altitude; I knew there would be a crash and there was. Jim Maloney - his friend since 3rd grade - did a world's record as he ran 1.5 miles along the runway and down the hillside to get there in time to save him. The engine and wings had separated from the fuselage and exploded (full of fuel), and a minute (literally!) after Jim pulled Steve out of the cockpit (one broken arm and two broken legs) and got him aboard the Dustoff, the fuselage caught fire. And then two years later Jim was lost in a PT-22, running into a cloud with rocks in the bottom, flying back from Phoenix to Chino on a "nothing" flight. I have been to too many funerals of people who died "too young" as a result of being involved in aviation. Yet, in every case, had that person known the outcome beforehand, it would have changed nothing. Like someone once said, it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees. Hmmm... it's getting late and the bottle of Chardonnay with the Chicken Normandie I made is catching up. :-) Tom ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 03:09:20 EST From: CTJDavies@aol.com To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: First kits Message-ID: <2d.992de5.25c54bb0@aol.com> In einer eMail vom 30.01.2000 03:38:52 (MEZ) Mitteleurop鋓sche Zeit schreibt lyle.lamboley@juno.com: << Now I am doing R/C and am currently building a Proctor D.VII, >> Hi Lyle, good to have you here. Not much in color in either but good drawings by Ian Stair and brief histories in both. As far as building the Eduard kit, I clipped the following from fellow listee Alvie: Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 03:22:45 -0500 From: "Michael S. Alvarado" To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Fok D.VI Message-ID: <382E7155.93AD90DB@bellatlantic.net> As far as the drawings I have on the Fok. D.VI the kit is fairly accurate in outline.. The rudder and stabilizer are way to thick and should be sanded down to about half original thickness. The upper aind lower wing halves reqiire a lot of sanding to get a smooth, gapless fit at the leading and trailing edges (you may want to discard the lower wing halves and use sheet styrene instead). On mine I found the cabane struts were too short, replace with wire or plastic rod. I really do wish the lower wings were made one piece or one piece upper and lower the two two piece but joined lower wing halves made assembly a bit of a pain, especially when the cabane struts were the wrong size. The most glaring error I found on the kit is that the under surface of the fuselage in planform at the flare to the cowling is not symmetrical. This caused problems with wing alignment. The next one I do I will check the fuselage carefully before painting and decaling (over all lozenge). I will also cut a notch in the bottom of the fuselage halves for a lower wing box spar carry through like the prototype and fabricate a new single lower wing bottom piece incorporating the box spar so that I get a solid lower wing join. I can then assemble the interplane struts to theblower wings, the upper wings to the interplane struts and have a more or less rigid wing cellule with which to size cabane struts. Hindsight is always 20/20. Anyway it a pretty little airplane. By the way, if you do Siebert's Jasta 80b aircraft, the fuselage band should be black with white edging not turquoise. HTH Alvie When I get a good "how to" post on a specific plane like this, I also print it to stick in the kit box should I ever get around to building the subject. - JCG -----Original Message----- From: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu [mailto:wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu]On Behalf Of Brent & Tina Theobald Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2000 2:28 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Fokker D VI Greetings, I am looking for a little help with my Fokker D VI. But then again there's a picture of a cockpit (taken from a not too good angle) that doesn't seem to show any belt at all but on the othre had shows a nice cushioned arm rest on the internal structure to the side of the seat.... We have a similar section on the Cross & Cockade web site for the GB & International journals - and I'd be quite happy to add a section to cover the original US journal too! Let me know ... Hi Brent, I'm sure one of the learned scholars must have pointed out by now that D-VI's were overall loz. BUt if you're in the mood for some Dicta Ira, I have the Munson drawings which I could send a photo-copy of. However, those only show half of the airplane, so you'd have to make up the rest. I can certainly understand how you feel about flying it! My triplane has three flights on it and it is currently hanging from the ceiling. Much better for my nerves. I have a Fokker E.V that is far better behaved in the air, I guess that's why it's such a popular choice for the flyers. The D.VII is quite a challenge--the fuselage is built from 5/16" dowels, an attempt at simulating the steel tube. It is a little large for true scale, but still effective. I hope to have it finished for the Dayton Dawn Patrol in September, but the best laid plans are usually cast side by dumb things like work and bills. Ha! WWI Models is the language spoken here and it doesn't matter if its 1/144 scale or underpowered with a G-62 on it. Now y'all are gonna be in big trouble if I start building R/C again. The wife will definitely have a word or three to say about it ;-) Despite the risks, please fo keep us posted on your doings with the bigger birds.
