What color are the 3 horizontal lines on the rear fuselage of N.17 #1844. The Eduard kit and several profiles of this plane show these in black. But the Americal/Gryphon Escadrille Lafayette shows these as red, and states that French units avoided black markings, as they could be mistaken for German crosses from a distance. Also, a couple of days ago when someone on the group posted the web site for Fighting the Flying Circus, this site had a photo of this aircraft, and the lines appeared light. This could not be interpreted as black. Does anyone have a good side view of this aircraft? It's not in the Datafiles or the old Profile, or the FMP French book. This book has a painting of this plane escorting bombers, and the lines appear black in the painting. What is needed is a good photo showing the rudder & lines, then the red on the rudder can be compared to the lines. I hope that it is red!!! Also, is the wood around the tailskid natural wood or is it overpainted aluminum? Right now, I am rigging the Toko Snipe which I had started to build about six months ago and then put away. Anyway as you might expect Commander Charles Salmson figures prominently in the early chapters. I am up to Galipoli at present. Salmson comes across as sometimes brilliant, very explosive and quite hilarious because of it. One passage written by a mechanic starts during a Turkish raid on the RNAS Aerodrome ....He Salmson came out while the bombs were still dropping, swinging his goggles and got into his machine to get after them but when I got there I found I hadn't got my dope can.... So I swung the it and hoped it'd go but no.... swung it three times. He (Salmson) said "have you doped it?" "I said no Sir" Oh! you ought to have heard his language. I had to go a hundred yards to get my dope can and he swore at me all the way there and back. he never said the same word twice...... Another time Salmson spent a half day firing odd post shots from his revolver at an unexploded bomb, eventually giving up in disgust and having the mechanics lasso it and drag it away The guy comes across as an absolute hoot and definitely not having the English stiff upper lip...... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 22:28:09 -0500 From: smperry@mindspring.com To: Subject: Re: Thanks re: Vice Squad.... er.... vise squad Message-ID: <001901bf6488$b4dee6a0$710d56d1@default> > I'll manage though - just have to have the discipline to walk away for a > few hours if it gets on my nerves "Walk, fool, walk!" is the thing I most often have to tell myself. As such I'm able to move the model without actually holding it. If need be you can even hold the styrofoam block in a small table vise and the model will be pretty estatic so that you can go about with your rigging, but as Lance says most of the times you'll want to hold the model in some strange position and the vise is not great help here. Additionally, the Grand Way department store sponsored a model contest, and the entries were displayed in the front window of the store where passersby could view them. Winners got nice trophies and merchandise. Lot different today, most department and drug stores around here (Louisville, Ky area) have gradually done away with model kits. Some of the toy stores have a selection of kits. And I have seen a couple of local hobby shops go down the tubes in the last few years. I thank my lucky stars we have one really good shop locally (Scale Reproductions), the proprietor is a member of our club, and comes to our meetings. But most of the customers I see are not kids or teens, makes me wonder what will happen to our hobby when we as a group get a bit older. How many people have their own binary birthdate? Of course, we would write it 10/1/00 but it works for me, either way. Great news, Todd! If this is wrong Matt please correct as I know kit markings are not the most reliable of sources.
