All four struts are numbered '22' but two are definitely shorter than the other. I took the advise in an earlier post and painted the upper surfaces dark grey to tone down the kit furnished hexes. For those who haven't started this kit I found the slots and alignment dimples for the bottom wing and horizonal tail were not similiarly placed hence when I glued the tail on I found it to be 4 scale inches too far forward than the tail on the opposite side, same with the main bottom wings. Simple to fix one only has to modify the slot and small pins to adjust. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 22:37:40 -0500 From: "Michael S. This was all Bob's fault in the first place, bringing up the idea that the fairing may have been covered in fabric at all. >Furthermore, you can see a "loz" pattern on the leading edge of the axle fairing of some D.VIII - dead easy to see until you realise that the oil dripping from the engine almost always makes a dark, loz like blotch on the fairing at about mid point and it isn't loz at all. I decided that I should only use the clear photos - and assume that if no loz appeared in the clear photos, I could believe it didn't exist in the cruddy ones. I agree. Just a minute ago I was looking at a photo of a Dr.I, and in the oil patterns on the side of the fuselage, I could make out the face of Barbara Streisand.....scarry! >BTW - what I mean here is "loz covered and unpainted" - the axle fairing may well be fabric covered then painted, and what type of fabric (and whether it was routinely done) is what we're discussing ! Don't you love this sort of conundrum? It's what makes WW1 aircraft so fascinating to me, since modelling one can turn into a meld between artistry, history, and the instincts of a detective. The one that I am truly interested in, is if the very early Fokker built D.VII axle fairing was covered in natural linen or not. Sounds like not, maybe time will tell differently. At the end of the year there's always a delay in mail services, due to the amount of traffic related with the holidays. That's why I wondered about my Windsock issue as well. Mr. Roll (from whom I buy the magazine) told me that he received his batch a little later than usual and the magazine arrived at my home yesterday, almost a month after leaving the US, when usually it takes only a week to reach Argentina by air mail. I felt so relieved! I guess that the delays apply to the surface mail too, and the amount of mail between US and UK must be huge by these days. The magazines will arrive late, very late, I guess. So, as Kramer said "serenity now!". It looks great. Two spruce of light grey plastic, nice moulded and clean, PE parts for seatbelts, gun sight, and others small parts, decals for two aircrafts. Firs with dark green/brown upper and side with doped bottom surfaces with "eyes" and "jaws" (can't remember pilot's name :-)), and second with doped sides and bottom with green/brown upper surfaces. Both 1916. One thing little "strange" is representation of fuselage stucture on outer surfeces. There are engraved(?) lines like in eduard's albatros for interior (I don't know how to describe it in english), little heavy but it can be easy removed. Drawings for rigging are not very clear, more you can see on boxart http://w3.inshop.cz/vamp/inshop/obrazky/ga001.jpg I have no documentation of this plane so I can't tell if its dimensions are correct. Though I know of at least one listee who's feelings will be "mixed" shall we say, this one is a must have for me. Well, if they are still good buildable kits, give them to someone you trying to get started in the hobby. Friends or children. Or Charities like children's groups, hospitals, that sort of thing. A good example of this might be the Monogram 1/48th scale DVII, buildable but crude, and surpassed by modern kits. If they are "collectable" sell them to a collector and buy some more GOOD kits. If they are bad kits (I don't mean inaccurate, kids don't care) but kits that are hard to put together, take out the good bits (if any) and chuck the remainder. Yours, James D.
