Wanna know what's inside? Well, how about the Passchendaele 1/48 Halberstadt D.II, built up by our own Steve Perry! Put your bibs on, because drool will short circuit your keyboards. And while they aren't exactly OT, they DO have two wings. We're talking Heinkel He51s, two of them. And with profiles by Mr. Pearson himself. Tonight I got the following message from him and, as he asked me to let the list know he is all right, I thought I would simply share his text with you. ====================================================== Hi Dave After a couple of months with tons of work, Stella and I decided to spend a 4 days holiday in New York and off we went with Michelle our 8 years old daughter. While in NY , the floods in Venezuela occurred. They devastated most of the coast and all the important airports where closed, so we could not return. This was possible only 2 days ago when we traveled to Bogota in Colombia and from there to Barquisimeto in the middle of Venezuela and from there an 8 hours ride in a shaggy bus . What we found is difficult to narrate. Caracas , where I live, was basically spared, only some shacks that had been allowed to be built in very perilous places where washed away , but in the coast the damage has been impossible to describe. Due to the out of season intense rains , the soil of this 5 to 6 thousand feet high range of mountains was washed away creating a mud slide of 16 to 20 feet high that buried towns, sea resorts, ports etc. , under it is estimated lie more than 100.000 dead. There isn't much to be done now, the few survivor are relocated and it is not sure where the area will be reconstructed or not. Thanks god none of family or friends where among the dead and only some material damage where suffered. Best wishes for you and family , What happened to the list , is it still down? Please let me know , tell the list I am OK , UN GRAN ABRAZO Alberto Rada ================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 17:10:00 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu'" Subject: RE: New Years Resolution: Modelling and Kids Message-ID: <65C968E11318D311B0BD0060B06865CDBD1B76@mimhexch.mim.com.au> Bob, > What I have to look forward to during the new millenium: > > Five children: three boys and two girls. This is consciously or unconsciously one of the nicest things I have seen on this list. The future so truly lies with our kids. Today I have spent time with my 5 yo son, who is building a model given to him for Christmas by another 5 yo friend. Tomorrow I'm booked by my 9 yo daughters to show them how to spray paint mottles (hell, I never *heard* of mottles until I was a teen!) None of the models are OT, but all three tell visitors that they're only building them until they get good enough to make biplanes :-) (Very efficient brainwashing) I don't care if they build jets - so long as they have fun, and grow up healthy happy and - eventually - wise. But it sure is nice to watch your kids having the same sort of fun you had, and to hope that even one of them still enjoys it as much as I do after 36 years of practice. Ask them for a WW2 hero and 99% will name "Weary Dunlop", a doctor in the Japanese POW camps who AFAIK never won a medal for anything, but saved lives and inspired people then, and for 50 years afterwards. Is there anything wrong > with that kit? A follow up to my short answer of last night. The main problem is that in common with most (all?) Airframe vacs it is moulded over male moulds, meaning that any exterior detail is pushed out from the inside, making it 'fuzzy'. This includes the longerons and upright struts on the fuselage which stand proud on the outside. The second point is that all flying surfaces, the tail and rudder are moulded as upper and lower sections, also with 'fuzzy' detail. Due to the kits age there are no detail parts for the cockpit, nor are there any decals. Having said that I have seen a superb model made from the kit by an expert (non listee) modeller, but it took him about 18 months to do. I am afraid that, although I regard vacforms as the ideal modelling medium, I do not rate this or any Airframe as being a good build. A very different story from a Lonestar B1 (or B10?) a friend of mine got a while back. The resin fuselage corrugations were terribly marred with a lot of bubbles. Some other very good VC sites, http://www.chapter-one.com/vc/default.asp http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/stewart/vcross.htm and for Australians and New Zealanders, http://www.ozemail.com.au/~vcweb/ and for Indians, http://haynese.winthrop.edu/india/medals/VC/IndVC.html The RSL has been collecting VC's that went into the private market and donating them to the AWM. Interestingly McNamara's VC which he won in Palestine and was the AFC's and Australia's only aerial VC is on display at Hendon. McNamara spent his last days in England but I bet a lot of Australians would like to have a look at his VC, the AWM should do some kind of exchange or exhibition deal with the Hendon Museum. cam ______________________________________________________________ Get Your Free E-mail and Homepage at http://www.prontomail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Jan 2000 12:14:49 EST From: Michael Kendix To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Short 184 Message-ID: <20000101.121424.4447.2.mkendix@juno.com> Len: I haven't taken a close look at that particular Airframes kit (I think I bought from a friend at our IPMS chapter for about $4) but the F.E.8 is, as you say, somewhat fuzzy. I was hoping to make it but now TOM-M models is preparing one in resin. The 10 and 12 were two seaters, although most of the 10s were converted to single-seaters. The 12 was a larger machine than the 10. The 11 (Bebe) was developed from the 1914 Gordon Bennett race machine as a single seat fighter. That's why the 11 is not in the book Regards Steve =========================================== steve@oldglebe.freeserve.co.uk If I didn't spend so much time on line ‹‹ I'd get more models finished ================ ---------- >From: "Jim Landon" >To: Multiple recipients of list >Subject: Nie 11 not between 10 and 12 >Date: Sat, Jan 1, 2000, 1:28 am > > I have a dumb question.
