Some previous threads were lambasting FSM for it's content and lamenting that manufacturers except for EDWARD and TOKO were Ignoring our OT wishes. Yesterday I was looking at the FSM most wanted kit list. Guess what? There wasn't a SINGLE OT model ON the list. We have a stateside cliché' " Use it or Loose it!" referring to our right to vote. Manufacturers have in the past paid attention to the relative minority of the modelers who have made some input to this "vote". May I humbly suggest that we look for the 2000 most wanted kit survey, (especially since FSM now has a web page) and slightly bias their outcome in our favor this year! It appears that last year not more than 100 people voted. So half of us could throw the outcome to any way we wanted. In fact we could do our own pre vote and decide that our "votes" would be the same from all over the world! Just so happens I wrote the instructions for this kit. Had a devil of a job cause I had to interpret some awful translated Italian, but I just did a lot on my own. This kit does have a few flaws with the castings, and I have noticed that in production runs some castings do not come out as good as they did in a previous kit. But all in all, for the $119 sale price you get a lot for your money. There is a ton of castings in this kit, and the laser cut wood parts are reasonably good. Now, I did not actually build one of these models, but as I wrote the instructions, Larry Edwards at Model Expo built the model that you see on the box. He is not a very experienced model builder, but he had little trouble building the model and came up with a nice model, very professional looking. He had little trouble with parts fitting, although he did find some areas that need tweeking, and he notified the designer to fix these. Whether or not it got done I don't know. That's the nature of this type of kit. It's not like your normal plastic kit. A bunch of castings are often off a little because of shrinkage. Some poor design may also creep in. On the whole I don't think anyone should be discouraged from building this kit just because a few don't like the way some parts don't fit well. Now I am not speaking because I was involved with it. Its not my design, it's Italian, and I don't get a thing if they sell it. I just feel it is a great kit despite it's faults. Yes, it is no Hasegawa, but then it don't cost $500 either, and more importantly it is one of the few kits available in this scale with structural details. We should poll first, here, on the list as to our top five choices, and then when the top five are figured out, all of us enter those top five into the poll. There are over 100 people on this list (I think). If we can get the entire list to agree to enter only those top five, then we should do it. And yes, the 1/72nd builders would enter the top five for 1/48th, and vice versa. If memory serves, they tend to break these up in scales anyway, right? Just to let you all know, unfortunately it looks like the Albatros D.V - in the Correct Scale - also has these horrid decals from Poland. I haven't tried them yet, but nowhere on the decals are either the words "PropagTeam" nor "Microscale". Instead, all they say is "Made in Poland". So, aftermarket decals are a must. As I dont plan to be checking my email at midnight ;) I thought now would be a good time to wish everyone on the list a very safe and happy New Year. May the next 100 years bring as many scientific and social breakthroughs as the previous 100, without the wars or strife of the past 100 years. Oh and lots more OT plastic too. The proper application of file, sand paper and steel wool and maybe a little superglue gel filler and they look great and can be made to fit with just a little tweaking. So far I have just barely started the engine. Obvious flaws with the kit (which are correctable) are (1) the lack of leading edge sheeting and webbing on the upper and lower wing panels, the lack of webbing in the after part of the lower wing ribs, the suspect rudder bar mounting and the lack of fusee spring covers on the Spandau machine gun receivers. All of these flaws are are more or less easily correctable for those of us truly afflicted with AMS. The fit of any wood model is always problematical and changeable due to the nature of wood. This is not a model for the rank beginner but it is the raw material for a truly great opus. Alvie BEN8800@aol.com wrote: > I assume you all are talking about the Model Expo kit. And I hope the way all the matter was handled may have some reprecussion in the future. There was no need to go out and bomb anyone and even though the people in East timor have suffered a lot, it seems that it is a happy case when compared to Kosovo or Irak or Rwanda or Angola or so many other places in the world. May the new Millenium bring about the solution for all these questions.
