I am satisfied with the W-4 because I proved out my ideas about homemade ply decals. I also destroyed the model trying to clean it and then rebuilt it better than at first. The least satisfying model was the Sierra Spad A.4 Bob makes a beautiful vac kit and I was simply over my head starting it when I did. I managed to screw up a first rate kit. sp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 12:04:55 EST From: Albatrosdv@aol.com To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: ot - Another One Gone Message-ID: <0.4c892a61.25828cb7@aol.com> I doubt all that many of you know of Jackson Barret "Barry" Mahon, who died this past Saturday, so I thought I would tell you about him. He was both a friend and a mentor to me - the first WW2 ace I got to know on a friendship level. Barry was the fourth ace of the Eagle Squadrons. You know of his exploits during the war, because the Steve McQueen character in the movie "The Great Escape," on which he was Technical Advisor, was based on his reputation as "The Cooler King" of Stalag Luft III. Barry began flying here in Southern California, at Glendale Grand Central Airport. In 1941, he doctored his logbook from 70 hours in pipers to 300 hours in all kinds of things, including a Spartan Executive. He went to Canada and jointed the RCAF. The first time he was on a field, they suggested he fly the Harvard solo, since he had so much time in high-performance aircraft. He had to admit to the instructor he had doctored his logbook - the instructor told him "I figured," and proceeded to teach him well. He got to England in late 1941 and became a member of 71 Eagle Squadron. By the time of the Dieppe Raid, Barry had four victories. He got his fifth one over the beach and became a victory for a Focke-Wulf, ending up in the water where he was picked up by an E-boat on its way to attack the invasion fleet. In Stalag Luft III, he became "The Cooler King" for his constant escapes. At the time of "The Great Escape," he had ticket #1 to go through the tunnel, but his feet were still in terrible shape from his last escape where he got as far as Czechosolovakia, intending to walk to the Eastern Front since "the Germans wouldn't expect that." As he said, he was also in terrible physical shape from the 60 days in the cooler he got for that. Liberated in 1945, he was finally awarded the DFC he was supposed to have gotten the day after he was shot down, pinned on him personally by King George VI. After the war, Barry came back here to southern California and ended up in the movie business when Errol Flynn hired him as his pilot; he later became Flynn's agent for the remainder of his life and career. Barry's Errol Flynn stories could fill a book themselves; he ended up producing most of Flynn's movies during the 50s. His daughter, Flynn's god-daughter, produced the TV movie "My Wicked, Wicked Ways," back in the late 1980s. Barry was one of the first people to apply computerization to movie work. I met him as an aspiring screenwriter who was also interested in WW2 aviation history; he read my stuff and told me I had promise, and introduced me to the first producer who ever hired me to write anything, and the agent who negotiated the deal. Those of you not in this business may not understand what an unbelievably wonderful gift that was, but I remember it always. Barry was also good friends with Orson Welles, and I will never forget the afternoon in 1984 when I went over to see him, and Welles was there in the office. Even then at the end, what a raconteur! The dominant presence in the room, and the two hours of tales he told are one of my favorite Hollywood memories. We are the poorer for Barry's passing. He was 78, and went quickly. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 18:05:54 GMT From: "Peter Leonard" To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Proposed new thread. - Most satisfying OT model built Message-ID: <19991210180554.84313.qmail@hotmail.com> For me it's one that I never actualy finished (no surprize there then) Mastering the Bristol M1C and then producing it in kit form. I also think I may have seen off a couple of virus spreaders. Where possible I have lately taken to forwarding these messages to the E-mail providers concerned. The response has been possitive, particularly from Yahoo, and I am naieve enough to believe that I can have an effect, though I realise it's like cutting off the head of the hydra. One good peice of advice I have been given is not to be taken in by the "CLICK HERE TO REMOVE" scam. That just confirms to the Spammer that your e-mail account is active and can make things worse. In particular do not respond to any message inviting you to visit a site and win a prize, that could just be a direct link to a virus download. An aviation joke for the weekend IF AIRLINES SOLD PAINT Customer (CU): Hi, how much is your paint? Clerk (CL): Well, sir, that all depends. CU: Depends on what? CL: Actually, a lot of things. CU: How about giving me an average price? CL: Wow, that's too hard a question. The lowest price is $9 a gallon, and we have 150 different prices up to $200 a gallon. CU: What's the difference in the paint? CL: Oh, there isn't any difference; it's all the same paint. CU: Well, then, I'd like some of that $9 paint. CL: Well, first I need to ask you a few questions. When do you intend to use it? CU: I want to paint tomorrow, on my day off. CL: Sir, the paint for tomorrow is the $200 paint. CU: What? When would I have to paint in order to get the $9 version? CL: That would be in three weeks, but you will also have to agree to start painting before Friday of that week and continue painting until at least Sunday. CU: You've got to be kidding! CL: Sir, we don't kid around here. Of course, I'll have to check to see if we have any of that paint available before I can sell it to you. CU: What do you mean you'll have to check to see if you can sell it to me? You have shelves full of the stuff! I can see it right there. CL: Just because you can see it doesn't mean that we have it. It may be the same paint, but we sell only a certain number of gallons on any given weekend. Oh, and by the way, the price just went up to $12. CU: You mean the price went up while we were talking? CL: Yes, sir. You see, we change prices and rules thousands of times a day, and since you haven't actually walked out of the store with your paint yet, we just decided to change. Unless you want the same thing to happen again, I would suggest that you get on with your purchase. How many gallons do you want? CU: I don't know exactly. Maybe five gallons. Maybe I should buy six gallons just to make sure I have enough. CL: Oh, no, sir; you can't do that. If you buy the paint and then don't use it, you will be liable for penalties and possible confiscation of the paint you already have. CU: What? CL: That's right. We can sell you enough paint to do your kitchen, bathroom, hall and north bedroom, but if you stop painting before you do the bedroom, you will be in violation of our tariffs. CU: But what does it matter to you whether I use all the paint? I already paid for it! CL: Sir, there's no point in getting upset; that's just the way it is. We make plans based upon the idea that you will use all the paint, and when you don't, it just causes us all sorts of problems. CU: This is crazy! I suppose something terrible will happen if I don't keep painting until after Saturday night? CL: Yes, sir, it will. CU: Well, that does it! I'm going somewhere else to buy my paint. CL: That won't do you any good, sir. We all have the same rules. And thanks for painting with our airlines! --------------C967FE10EBF29C4FB7818DD4 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; name="ATTACH01." So far, the most satisfying OT's that I've managed to finish have been my E-III, my Kessler Dr1, my Udet D-VII, and my N.17. The E-III because it's my most ambitious modefied effort to date that's been completed. My Kessler Dr1 because it just looks so damned good. My D-VII for the same reason. And the N.17 because it won some little award. E. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 18:12:07 -0600 From: "Lee Mensinger" To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: SPAM on the site.
