Exchanges here on the list about Ebay have concentrated on the stupid prices, yet an Aurora DH4 on Ebay typically goes for 50-60 dollars, the one I saw at the show was priced £60! Over one hundred dollars! The trader should be asking himself why it was still there at the end of two days, and whit will probably still be there next year. I have a loft full of unbuilt kits, but they were all bought with the >intention< of building them. There were examples of several issues of the same kit (some of which are still in the catalogues) at wildly differing prices depending on the box. I am not interested in the box, but clearly collectors are, so here is an offer for any collectors out there. You can have ALL my boxes in exchange for ALL your kits. Seems fair to me :¬) yours invisibly Peter ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 22:17:59 +0200 From: "Lubos Vinar" To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: O.O.B. Are these the folks who >make the 1/24 Caudron G.III? AJP Maquettes are a French company (I believe) that make a range of early planes and gliders (couple of Lillienthal) in 1/48. The construction is etched brass ribs, spars and formers (a la Eduard stripdown) with white metal for some of the solid bits. They supply a special paper to cover the kit with, just like the real thing. I haven't made one, just seen them reviewed in Windsock and nearly bought one (but there's no way I could ever build it). The kits look awesome, with a nice translucent CDL effect from the paper covering. Very fiddly, but very rewarding. Range is reasonable, prewar stuff (Antoinette, Avro triplane, Bleriot and more) through a Spad (7, I think), Nie 11, Caproni and more. They ain't cheap - the Caproni is £110 (about $170 plus), but they are impressive. The 1/24 Caudron is IIRC made by a Swiss company, Metropolitan. There were a lot of traders offering pre-fondled kits, but few new releases. Still I managed to spend a lot of money, mainly on references. Did not find the WW1 SIG stand, but there were quite a few OT types to see in the competition area and otherwise. The competition area was closed most of the time I was there on Saturday, noted some realy nice flying boats. Pegasus Models had its stand next to the toilets - I don`t know if it because of their remark regarding Aeroclub working out of a former public toilet or if they wanted a place everyone walked past. They were selling spare metal detail parts and decal parts from various kits, had the 1/48 Albatross Oef and 1/72 Etrich Taube as new releases. Aeroclub sells a lot of different stuff, I did pick up a bunch of Strutz, they do also have the Copper State Models, TC Models and Choroszy resins, selling the latters Fridrichshafen G.III versions at 33.50 GBP. I built a Choroszy Ba 27 resin some time ago, very nice resin parts and acceptable metal parts. TC Models plan a Douglas World Cruiser and Gotha G.IV, did not see any of their kits when I was in South Africa, their Vimy would cost the equivalent of a weeks salary for an engineer down there... AJP Models had their etched beauties there, I thought the wings were to thin and translucent - until I went to the Imperial War Museum a few days later to find that the BE2 hanging there displayed exactly the same effect. Maybe we could ask them to do some of the BE2 family. Delta Bits was listed with a stand, but it was empty. Herrn Schorsch wasn`t there, so no chance to dig into boxes of resin kits. Both Hannants and 4+ were selling Flashback Taubes, Toko kits were also in demand so I think WW1 aircraft are still of interest. The Rimmells were there as well, selling of some bits and pieces of his model and artifact collection. No new releases there noted by me. Strange they are not planning to publish a Taube datafile with the new kits. It was interesting to see some of the familiar names in this hobby, I did even get to shake hands with The One and Only Jennings Heillig. May have been easier to find ones way around the exhibitions if the SIGs and local displays were not mixed with the dealers, think it would have been easier with one part with sales stands and one mainly with displays. Hints for London travellers --------------------------- How to get to Telford It is possible to get to the UK Nationals in Telford and back to London in the same day, trains London-Euston to Telford takes 3 hours each way. 10 min walk from Telford Central station to the exhibition, you walk past a very large shopping centre on the way so you could probably leave your wife there for some hours and see who will manage to spend most money. It is some distance to anything but the shopping and exhibition centre, so you have to get a car or settle for some dead cow parts at McDonalds. Hannants and RAF Museum Same not to helpfull staff in Hannants, still a good selection if you can find it on your own. Lot of resins locked up, you need some time to find what you want. Surprised they don`t have some sort of computer based system to keep track of stock since they have the web-site. Still writing down the kits on a list for Lowestoft to restock. Would have been a lot easier if there was a terminal available so you could search for suff and check if it is availble there. Think the RAF Museum had moved some of its exhibits since last time, it is a great museum, there were a few new aircraft on show including the Bristol Bulldog, so it is a must for those who are in London. Someone asked about Caudron engine references, could you get in touch with me so I can check if there is anything worth scanning among my pictures. The Aviation Bookshop Is located in 656 Holloway Rd, down from Archway Tube station. It is my favourite bookshop, a large wall of old a recent WW1 books, and a vast asortement of magazines. They do even sell photos/prints. My OT find this time included a Roumanian Farman F.40 profile and Lange`s book on Ritter von Schleich in excellent condition. Shop is fairly well organized and I prefer it to Foyles and Motorbooks in Central London. Comet Miniatures Is worth a visit, they have most of the recent releases that Hannants may be out of stock on and a lot of old OT stuff. Helpfull staff, but they seem to look like the figures they sell in the sci-fi part of the shop. If only sci-fi shop is open, ask and they will call someone from the dungeons to open the other shop. Imperial War Museum It is worth a visit, they were rebuilding some of their exhibitions, some realy excellent displays there, and with 400 ASA film you can take pictures of the aircraft hanging from the ceiling without flash. Thats all for now, IPMS Norway is planning to send a larger group for next years UK Nationals, so be warned.
