Strange, but I always thought Labor Day was 9 months after Fathers Day ;-) I hope to be getting the final assembly started this weekend on the Eduard Hanriot D.2. This has turned out to be really a fun kit to assemble. Some minor fit problems so far, but nothing really unexpected. The cowling seems to be a little small in diameter, similar to the Hobbycraft 1/32 Nieuport 17. The engine also sticks out too far, actually preventing the cowling on my example to fit snug when dry-fit. I still have the upper wing left to attach, and that can sometimes spring surprises on an unsuspecting person. Didn't have any trouble with the float struts--I thought they could be a pain to assemble, but I just took it slow and steady. Decals go on good, and react well with solvents. This is one of the first times I have applied a fuselage band decal without problems getting it aligned or contoured properly. I enthusiastically recommend this kit to all braille scalers (munchkins too). Paul A. And as an U.S. citizen I humbly apologize for the slick ad campaign that sold these kits to the rest of the world at way too high prices. ( I can find them for under $8.00 now) But it is really no harder than the average vac kit and has the same amount of detail as an early 50's kit. Just missing the more accurate alignment and details we are becoming used to. By the way for those of you in Peter's case, and you've yet to start on the Glenco D-III variants, please note that there are absolutely NO alignment marks or holes for the cabanes on the fuse. And the lower wings "plug" one pip of an alignment pin into one hole in the fuse. There is nothing to set pitch, sweep or dihedral , except for the "V" struts coming down from the top wing, which you can't align because there are no marks on the fuse. Y'know Peter I just heard the lads from Monty Python are going to do a 30 year anniversary show. Is it possible that Nexus is the source of their writers? Although I graduated from Parks College of Aeronautical Tech, and in the 30's they used to build a Travel air look a like called the Parks P-1 and P-2. The served a dual purpose in that the mechanical students learned by building them and the flying students risked life and limb in them. Anyway in 1977 we wanted to build a new one to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the school. Guess what the owner of the production certificate, the school no longer had the plans to build one! A possible solution to the publication problem. Since Nexus' first answer was too old, don't care and the second answer is we own it but don't have the master copy. Ask them if they'd relinquish the ownership (for free) to a society that would produce it. for a very limited market. They get a tax break, we get to make copies! If you recall, Ken is the guy who build the Jenny that is in the Cpllege Park Maryland Museum I told you about. Ken is a retired 60 year old former airline pilot who does great reproductions and replicas of old aircraft, most which fly. His latest effort is 3 Wright B aircraft which are to exact original specs, no modern updates. The first 2 are non flyers, one goes to Fort Rucker Alabama, and one to the College Park museum. The College park museum paid him $280,000 to build the craft. Wonder what the original cost? The 3rd plane will be Kens and will be flown next year. It now only has two propellors, the crew door smashed off, and the port upper wing snapped at the outer join. The shirring thread problem - I thought about it and have the following to add: I started using this stuff to rig rubber-powered flying scale models long before I got back into making plastic models. One of the balsa jobs - a Sopwith Triplane - still exists. I checked the rigging on it this morning - It's absolurtely undamaged. It's been stored (yes - in the light) on top of a cupboard for going on six years. I also have the original reel of shirring, which I got from my mother-in-law's knitting case. The reel must be at least 10 years old and I'm still using its contents! Hope this answers your question properly this time. The photos were interesting too - more than I thought at first glance. I have seen all of these before, but I realized that I never really looked at them. Sometimes the most interesting things are in the background and not the subject at all. In this case the author mentioned that in a couple of photos there was a Hannover CL.III in the background. Flipping the pages and son of a gun there it was! How did I miss that??? I suppose I would have missed Ursula Andress in a ...well...best not to go there. Ahem! A couple of Photos that were in the article can be seen on pages 5-6 of the Airco-Aircam-Glencoe SPAD book by J.M. Bruce. Its dark, but just over Rick's tail it looks like that Hannover or a D.VII is sitting there. One photo that was referred to, but not seen in the article was the SPAD with the "Barber Pole" landing gear. The picture is there in the Bruce book. I always though it looked the same as the rest of the "Old #1" shots. I see now how different it is. Yup. Still have yet to get to the SPAD 11. Once a couple of GPW Soviet stuff comes in (Su-2 and KV-85), everything will be swept off the workbench. :-) Matt Bittner http://www.geocities.com/~ipmsfortcrook http://www.discoveromaha.com/community/groups/plasticmodelers/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Sep 1999 20:28:09 EDT From: Michael Kendix To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Long Weekend Message-ID: <19990903.202411.4463.0.mkendix@juno.com> Matt: Same kind of thing here. Everything's going by the board once I get that Wallace & Gromit motorcycle and sidecar kit. Well, maybe I have to do a couple of things before that. Michael Juno is my home email. I can be reached during work hours at mkendix@hotmail.com during work time hours.
