Message-ID: Tom writes: << Why anyone intelligent enough to be a member of this group would be stupid enough to swim with the lemmings over at eBay is beyond me. eBay: proof you can fool all of the people all of the time, so long as those involved are yuppies. >> Tom - there are loads of good deals on ebay, you just have to have the patience to sift through the insanity and pick up the stuff that others have overlooked. Want a couple of tips? - search in related categories - not just the ones where the serious collectors hang out. For example, if you only search the WWI collectables, you are swimming with the sharks. But if you do some word searches, you will find stuff come spilling out from all sorts of unexpected categories, placed there by people who did not know better and may well have undervalued the items. Best of all, the sharks generally dont swim in those waters, so you might get a bargain. - look for quality items that are under-explained. For example, I once saw the Apostolo & Begnozzi book being described simply as a "biplane picture book" (from what I've heard, that may well describe the accuracy of the profiles, but that is another topic and misses the point). As a result, only a couple of people who bothered to enquire further ended up bidding. I was on vacation, so I dont know how it turned out, but I'll guess somebody got a bargain. Same thing applies to items without photos - amazingly, some people dont even look at descriptions of items that dont have the photo logo attached. - If someone is auctioning off 30 separate items from a collection of books, for example, all at the same time, you will probably get a few bargains. The number of serious purchasers are limited, and almost everyone has a budget they are restricted to, so they cant bid on all 30. You should be able to pick a few worthwhile items from the leftovers. - know what is the going rate for the item. I keep a wp file listing any books that I might be interested in and what they sell for - either lately on ebay, or through other booksellers on the net. Obviously, when comparing the cost with what is available locally, remember to calculate in p&h and, if you are in Canada or some other country other than the seller, the exchange rate. - and never, ever, ever say to yourself "I simply MUST have this item - regardless of what it costs me". Two junkies like that bidding and you end up with a $500 Staaken. $500 for a model - any model - crazy? yup - I think so. But I have purchased about 100 books over the past year, some of them on ebay for prices much less than I could ever get from an antiquarian book store, if it ever even shows up. I dont think that makes me either a lemming, stupid or a yuppie. Now, off to check some of those "end of the world" close-out bargains.... Millitarily useless but interesting weapons. Aprently they went through 3 barells, each capable of 60 rounds fired. The rate of fire was extreamly slow because the internal volume of the gun changed after each firing. This meant that the volume had to be re-meaured and the charge size had to be calculated. He said you could hear the shells coming from miles away, a sort of distant howling which got louder and louder until it sounded like an express train going by overhead, gradually diminishing in the distance until you heard a detonation somewhere down towards the beach.
