Message-ID: In a message dated 99-05-19 21:57:46 EDT, you write: << Too bad, Tom. Guess they never heard of "Wings" and "Hell's Angels" and "The Blue Max", huh? I have some friends in the film industry, and they tell me that generally the money guys' bad taste is only matched by their arrogance. It would seem that the SFX people's advances in digital animation (witness the little intro sequences in Red Baron II) would make a WWI film easier to make than it was ten years ago... the full-size a/c wouldn't even have to be flying replicas. Could you imagine Jasta 5 done by Industrial Light & Magic? D >> Oh, yes, I certainly can. Especially after once visiting SFX heaven a few years ago (aka Skywalker Ranch) and seeing a scene done for "Red Tails": pilot's POV from an escorting P-51 of 250 B-24s flying over the Alps. Each one was as different as the "battle droids" are in the new Star Wars movie. I don't think Lucas is ever going to do "Red Tails" (I was in on a "technical" rewrite as one of the few screenwriters in Hollywierd who know the pointed end of a P-51 goes in front), but he came up with some incredible stuff. They were going to use full-scale P-51s with half-scale Fw-190s and do the air combat live. Didn't work since top speed of the Fw's was 10 knots over the P-51's stalling speed and they couldn't survive in the same airspace. So they took a bunch of pictures of P-51 air-to-air, then they took some shots of a 3/4 scale flying Fw-190, and some shots of Black-6. Took those, digitized them, and they had "airplanes," which could be "painted" for any unit they wanted. If you think they couldn't do air combat after those leaping dinosaurs... I sincerely hope they have dropped RT, because "people are interested" in my WW2 fighter pilot story, "Little Friends" because they know that software has already been invented. (Thank you Saint Steven Spielberg for restoring our faith in WW2 movies). Of course, a fairly-dark tale about the perils of celebrity always works down here. Paul A. Schwartzkopf >> I am sure after I do the JN4 I may do another aircraft along with my ship work. Model Expo is enthused about the aircraft as the Albatros is outselling the ship line. I always knew there were more aircraft buffs than ship buffs. The Albatros sold almost 2000 kits in less than a year. My selection of a type of aircraft depends on the available of data. I am real picky about not guessing on details. I need facts. The Jenny has a lot of available info and great detail photos available thru people who have restored the real aircraft. At this point I don't know whats available on other aircraft. What looks complete may not be that complete. For example, the Nieto plans of the Jenny published in the Model Airplane News Scale aircraft drawings (Also available full size forom the Smithsonian) leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of good detail, but lots of structural info and component details missing. The factory plans are much better, and a good photo is worth its weight in gold. WW1 aircraft as you all know have a lot of little details such as fittings for drag and truss wires are important for a design. Also, details are required of the engine and cockpit controls. When I design for Model Expo, I also do all the brass masters for castings or develop drawings for photoetched parts so I must know the details. How about the Avro 504? Thats one of my favorites also. I saw it last summer during an open house. Went over there specifically yo see the Jenny and went thru the building and there was a Nieuport. The fuselage was nearly complete and they were working on the wing ribs. God, what a small airplane. Even the Jenny looks smaller than photographs. I was disappointed that the Jenny is roped off and they won't let you look into the cockpit. That stinks when you are a detail freek like me. They have a new museum in College Park Maryland with a Jenny but thats roped off also. Ben ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 09:17:52 -0500 From: "Douglas R. While this may be historically true it should not deter you from using the Old Rhinebeck scheme if you wish. If you are planning on competing with your model it simply must be a scale model of a documentable full scale aircraft. If you choose to go this route I can provide you with several photos (I took plenty) and could scare up video of the plane in flight including it's public debut. I probably have a bunch of photos at the house. I would be happy to scan them and send you a copy. It is possible I have cockpit shots. The folks at Old Rhinebeck are very accommodating of modelers/builders who want pictures. Doug ---------------------------------------------------------- 'I am a traveler of | Douglas R.
