I was very pleased as this was my first contest! Lots of excellent modeling but only one other WWI bird - a Glencoe Pfalz D.III in spurious green/black-light purple markings. I have a few fiddly bits to add, flare cartridge rack, gunsight, etc. Meanwhile I have an Eduard Sopwith Triplane in the rigging stage. I used the measure, pray, and drill approach to getting the wires through the middle wing. Hopefully this will be done in the next week. I've also got an Eduard SSW D.III that needs final assembly and rigging. So, to be honest my patience is shot and I'm pondering some 1/72 off-topic monoplanes for the next job. Fokker Fighters - A Review Message-ID: <3723CA23.50@worldnet.att.net> I just picked this up from Aeroplane Books $34.00 (US) including Shipping. Okay, it was expensive, but it got here in 3 days, Good service! WWW.AeroplaneBooks.com I thought I would review it for the group. I have seen some smatterings of mention, but this is worthy of closer examination. I have Vol. 1 Halberstadt Figherts, so I was not afraid to buy Vol 2. Halberstadt fighters is an excellent reference, but it seems too brief. Fokker Fighters more than makes up for the brevity of Vol 1., at 54 pages, including the inside covers - the color profile sections. There are some fantastic pictures here - many of I have never seen before, including an awesome in-flight series of Kissenberth in a D.II The cover, (a painting of a D.III downing a DH2) may rankle our Celtic cousins, but the caption admits this is a "rare victory". Peter Grosz does a really nice job of sorting out the tangled development history of the Fokker D-series. He takes on Fokker for his Clinton-esque treatment of the truth regarding this period of the Fokker company's history. The truth about the Mercedes Engine supply is explored in detail. Grosz plainly lays it on the line and says that the failure of this series of fighters was the fault of the engineering, manufacturing & quality control functions of the company. He attributes many of the difficulties to the haste to produce a follow on to the E series in the face of the new Allied bi-planes. Grosz takes no prisoners when it comes to A.R. Weyl either. The conflict is soft peddled in the text, but footnote 3 dismisses Weyl's Fokker biography as "at best...historical fiction", - the first time I have seen this in print other than Bob Pearson's commmetary. Grosz does a great job documenting the chronology of events that led to Fokker Fighters being banned from frontline service. Many of us have grown up knowing that this was true, but few of us have ever heard how this came about. It is with great surprise that Grosz passes the buck on the color schemes to Ray Rimell after advancing so many strong opinions. Ray spends a page and a half talking around this, but treats the subject like a "third rail" - Surprising to say the least. Sifting the text and looking at the profiles we understand he supports the streaky green camo, with green & brown wing upper surfaces theory. Is our community that tough an audience? My copy came with an insert to correct the 1/48 plans for the D.II & D.III. The ones in the book show omit the D.II top side view and the D.IV omits the bottom view. Yikes, I wonder who looked at the printer's proofs? Bottom line: 1.) Fascinating read. 2.) Great Pictures. 3.) Fantastic Profiles 4.) Worth the money. Two weeks of telephone calls and call-ins from work which left me with *less* time for modelling rather than more. But... Albatros D.Va (Josef Mai) fuselage painted, markings on, lower wing lozenged and part taped, upper wing lozenged. Best job I ever made of faux plywood finish IMHO. I'm getting the hang of it at last by finally taking my own advice and being subtle as hell, then removing half the "grain" Albatros D.V (Monnington) Blue undersides done, green topsides almost done. Going fater than the D.Va anyway. Albatros W.4 Wings finished, awaiting hex. Floats boxed up, need battens and hatches next. Caproni - no progress, but I looked at *lots* of photos until I got entirely bug eyed. The most difficult area that was a molding flaw was the starboard wing root. The forward portion was molded over, so filing and sanding was necessary, which left a not-as-good-as-the-port wing root. Much filling here. The other areas were mine. I decided to make the horizontal tail look more like it "really was", and I replaced the molded in pin on the fin with a brass one "more in scale". This is an area that IPMS judges will hate - the whole area has "gaps", since the incidence of the tail can be changed. This stuff is a little more in detail in my review which will show up 1 May. > Question: How did you approach the strut/upper wing attachment? Now this area isn't in my review, since this was nasty for me by my own doing. I started by gluing the "W" center struts on before the interplane. It would have worked if I (a) didn't model late at night (like after midnight) and working on four or so hours of sleep; (2) I would have used "tube glue" to position the struts, since after everything dried they were crooked, and (III) I would have used my head. What ended up happening to me was due to the late night modeling, I snapped the "arms" off the "W" struts, which left me with a "V". I glued those along with the interplane struts using tube glue, and once the "V"s and interplane struts were dry (ensuring a straight wing, of course) I re-added the "arms" of the center struts with plastic rod. Actually worked out better than expected! The key is to use tube glue, believe it or not. It gives you two advantages: slow drying time, and an extremely strong joint. However, if you do use it, then be sure to let it dry at least 24 hours before messing with the model. Ensures that the glue is completely set up. Last weekend I only painted the "lozenge" on a trench raider helmet and detailed the base with some debris. But the trench raider shares the workbench with: two Esci's Alb DIII fuselage corrected in thickness and exterior details (slab sides, wing fairings, insp. doors, etc.) maybe one of this will receive the DII features. Strutz! wires are there waiting for me too. Detailing a white metal Oberursel 110CV to use in the Fokker DVIII or Fok DR1. I want this thing rotating along with the propeller, so I have to add all the pipes, wires and cylinder rocker arms. The cowling is already thinned and corrected. De-sprueing (that word exists? I'll look in my dictionary) the Toko Pfalz DXII. I received the Datafile last week and I couldn't resist the thrill of taking this out of the box. Off topic:trying to build an assembly jig for my Hawker Fury, a project that I left fro a while since I want to paint a really shiny cowl and I don't know how. Drawing sketches of some aircraft details and a 1/35 version of a Mercedes staff car from awful photographs and a 1/72 reviresco kit (this will end in a quite "custom" version, I figure). As you may see, too many projects, all far from finishing... But having a big time! I copied one of the photos from the Datafile( stars) for someone. Any plane in particular? There is a copy of the French camo scheme if you need one. Let me know.
