This is from one of our Lockheed Martin newsletters: "The 10th annual Castor Canadensis Cup was held last week. This year the competition challenged entrants to design and build a balsa wood structure capable of surviving a drop from a height of 40 feet before being loaded in axial compression in a testing machine. All of the entries were creative. In numerous instances, the 40-foot drop was accommodated with aerodynamic features built into the balsa wood structure that provided for a soft landing. Tim Boland, a stress engineer on the [Lockheed Martin] Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program, created the winning structure. It consisted of only 17 grams of balsa wood and the ultimate load carrying capability of 1,370 pounds. Congratulations!" Why am I sending you this? Because I am currently building a balsa wood and tissue paper model of a WWI biplane and have noticed it is really quite strong. Someone who builds plastic model WWI biplanes had once commented that I ought to use something stronger than balsa wood. Attention WWI modelers list: I'm not currently on the list, so if you reply, do so off-list. Jim Landon, Staff Engineer, Lockheed Martin Astronautics Div. Is it possible to sand this stuff flat without destroying the finish? Well, yes, but it's not going to be easy sanding the accumulations of 20 coats all at once. What you'll end up doing is sanding away most of the 20 coats of Future. I try to remove "inclusions" as I'm painting. If you get to them quickly enough, you can pick them up with tiny bits of rolled-up masking tape. Or, if I spray a light coat on, let it dry, the merest rub with some wet 3600 grit sanding paper (from my Micro Mesh polishing kit) will suffice to remove the offending matter, and cause no discernible damage to the finish. >What grits would you recommend? The Micro Mesh polishing kit. It has grits from 3600 down to 12000. Get it from any hobby shop that caters well to car modellers (they need it for high gloss enamel finishes) >Is there any way I can prevent this from >happening in the first place? Keep your work area clean and vacuumed. Yeah, it's not easy, but it has to be maintained. Other than that, I find it helps to not try to pile too much paint on all at once. If you layer it in thin coats, you will find, as I said, that it's not too difficult to remove small accumulations. Also, in this manner you won't blow as much air around as you would if you were really piling the paint on. Less air blown about means fewer particles blowing about by the air, landing on your model. It comes in 30" and 60" lengths. It is already straight, so you don't have to worry about having to straighten it out. It is also very rigid. Therefore there is no need to anneal and straighten it. I purchased .005" diameter, the smallest they make. Tungsten is also available. Because the diameter is so tiny I am not going to try and drill holes. Later! What I tend to use is "sandpaper" intended for the "car" guys. This comes in the following grits: 2400, 3200, 4000, 6000 and 12000. For blemishes like you have - and if they're not too deep - go with the 4000 and then 6000 and 12000. If the "blemish" is in a lower coat, then start with the 3200. HTH. Nyaaah-nyaaah! The Air Museum at Chino brought over their 1928 Ford 5-AT (aka the Ford Trimotor) from the Grand Canyon museum, for the upcoming "reeeely big shew" on April 24/25. N414H is one of the most original restorations around, with 29,000 total hours on the airframe. Ten lucky folks got to be chauffered around by Museum President Steve Hinton on a 40 minute flight. The List members were your fortunate correspondent and Candice Uehler (Ashley9862@aol.com). We have been having Southern California's "winter weather" for the past week, with major thunderstorms and heavy rain on and off over the week. This morning looked like more of the same, but when we all got out to Chino (60 miles east of downtown L.A.) the cloud base was around 7,000', and sky cover was about 7/10. I thought we were going to abort on takeoff when the port engine began to backfire as Steve pushed the throttles forward, then he backed it off and ran it up again, and we started to veer to the right, then he caught it with the other two, put us back on the centerline, and we were off, at the maximum performance climb of 500 fpm. It's surprising that the wood-panel interior is as good a bit of soundproofing as it is, but the airplane shakes and vibrates to the point it would rattle your eye teeth on a long flight, and at 95kts TAS cruise, all flights are loooooong flights. We were escorted by two Stearmans as photo planes, with the Museum's T-6 playing tag as Frank Mormillo took other shots. For yours truly, suffering from Major Camera Problems, being Subject Matter was strange, but when I got back down and saw how cold Lani and Jim were after flying around in the front seat of the Stearmans I decided I hadn't really missed that much. Definitely a trip back in time. I'll get some copies of Lani's shots and post them at The Aeronut later this month. Congrats on the 5-AT flight! My wife and I were up in one back in 1990. This particular a/c was once the property of some church on Lake Erie, and some guy was touring the country with "The World's Oldest Flying All-Metal Airplane", as he called it. Sorry, I don't have all the stats, but it was out of Perry Airport, Hollywood, FL. My wife wanted me to ride copilot ($30), but I insisted she share in the excitement ($20 each). She was scared the whole way down the runway, as EVERYTHING vibrated and rattled. (No wood paneling.) When it lifted off, everything got quiet (well, relatively). We did a big rectangle around the field for about 20 minutes or so on a clear midafternoon. It was money well spent! Funny, when I called and told my father (b. 1918), he said, "What's the big deal? Lee mentions that the 'clock' was a much-coveted trophy among pilots and ground personel both. When he put his Pup down in a pond he forgot to remove it, and when he returned to the a/c it had been 'appropriated'. He had to fill out a whole bunch of forms and was interrogated by the supply officers who obviously thought he'd boosted it. He commented that if you lost the whole aeroplane it was less of a issue than if the clock turned up missing.
