INteresting series; I've been collecting them since the alternative ending WW2 series started about a year and a bit ago. Nicely drawn, a sort of quixotic mix of Japanese Anime style with standard B&W comic style -- and an interesting philosophy. The principle artist/ storyteller admits he grew up reading things like the Hammer series and the Phantom Tank stuff (Jeb Stuart as a ghost, in WW2.... gotta love it! ). But the only thing of interest directly to modellers is that on the back covers he profiles various crates -- some real, some "experimental" -- including MvR's red Tripe and so forth. Mostly second war tho.... According to an ad I saw some time ago (on Ebay!) this program allows you to set a max bid amount and a variable time delay -- so you can automatically sneak- in with the closing bid at the very last second. The advantage, according to the ad hype, is that you slow down the rate of bid increase (ie, you avoid a two- party bidding war), so you can screw your bidding opponent, at the last possible second, with the least amount of increase necessary. (I don't remember the name, or any other particulars 'bout the program. Of course, it may not work as well as advertised: what about uncontrolled variables like server response time, internet connections, etc.??) Yes, even without automated sneak attacks, Ebay has gotten so popular and inflated that there are seldom any bargains in WW1 Militaria. >> > Ahhh... the bane of my existence.... >> >> And almost mine.... ;-) > >> He came within a minute of beating me out for a book I've been patiently >> trying to find and add to my collection for YEARS: the Flying Circus book >> by Nowarra and Brown. OTOH when I do win an auction I rarely have to pay as much as my maximum bid was. BTW, my eBay User ID is a not-very-original "modeleral@aol.com"...... ;) Al ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 11:46:31 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Fletcher To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Bound profiles Message-ID: some of the probem th ebays system has to do with this limit thing - you will never win any bids by placing a bid for the max that you are willing to go - rather you must put in a bid that provides the minimum to get the high bid, then monitor the bidding process, and at the last minute place your actual bid, if it is still less than your maximum. This reduces the danger of the auction going up too quickly, and passing the market value of the item. Unfortunatly there are a great number of idiots out there desperate to aquire some of the crap being sold, so it is no guarantee of success. I believe that some people have rigged up programs (easy enough to do but I don't have the time right now) that monitor the progrss of the auction, and place a new bid each time they are outbid. Certainly it has happened a coule of times where each time I placed a new high bid, I was outbid by the same person within a couple of minutes, at widely different times of the day. When that happens, the only solution is to make a bid in the last 45 seconds, and hope they are unable to exceed your maximum. Cynically...
