This is the same aircraft that appears in Flying The Old Planes by Tallman. As the book was published in 1964 and all the photos in the book show the paint to be apparently new, I would guess that the ebay photo was taken somewhat later. Unless the photos in the the book were a few years old at the time of publication. At this time the aircraft's rudder incorrectly identified it as a XIII serial S4523. The roundels are french. The locale is most likely California. Van Nuys perhaps? Mr. Tallman gives a fabulous description of flying this machine which was apparently restored for the 1938 production of Men With Wings (Still not available on video, believe me I've been looking!). I'm not independently or for that matter, dependently, wealthy. I work a 40 hour week, teach a class of basic model building at a local hobby shop once a week, work in a literacy class, very active in my religion, roller skate and bike ride with my son and spend quality time with my wife. Just a normal, everyday type person. That doesn't answer the question does it? I enjoy building models. That is my hobby and I enjoy it more than I can say. Also, I do not spend a great deal of time on my models. I try not to spend more than 6 weeks on a kit. I look at some your models and the time it took to build them and I am in awe. I know if I reached inside the cockpit and flipped a switch, the thing would start. I don't do that. I will cheer you on from the sidelines and oooohh and ahhhh over your model, but I'm not going there with you. I model by the KISS method (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) and am very happy with the results. I build for me and my standards are not that high. I do get up early, very early. That's my quiet time and its just me and the cat. She doesn't help much, just wanders in and out. Besides, I have set a goal for my self. I want 100 completed before the end of the year 2000. That will be a nice number. So, nothing special. No spiders. No elves. Just me and the cat and 500 hundred plastic models. The other day I left the box for the Eduard D.VI open and came back into the room to find her dragging a sprue of parts out of the box on her way to God knows where. I suspect that someday I'm going to find her secret stash, and I shudder to think of what I'll find there. I think *every* modeller should model for him/her self and at whatever standard gives them pleasure. And I'm glad to hera *anyone* say so Shane ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 20:46:27 -0800 From: Fernando Lamas To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: SPADs & Old-timers /RE: Question: How to save photos on eBay? Message-ID: <3.0.6.32.19990110204627.007e1ae0@olympus.net> Thanks, guys. The right clicking on the eBay photos did the trick. The Roland C.II and the SPAD photos have been added to my WW I jpeg collection. And speaking of SPADs....I performed an ultrasound on an 87 year old hospitalized patient on Wednesday morning. His mind was still razor sharp. While chatting during the study, he mentioned that he had retired from "aviation". I replied that early aviation history was one of my hobbies and he rattled off some inter-war aircraft before I explained that by "early" I meant WW I. He then switched gears and told me that, when he was learning to fly, they had and old SPAD XIII at the airfield. And how the metalwork on it was so fine. And how they had other old planes with Le Rhone (or was it Clerget) rotary engines. And they had a gyroscopic torque effect when you flew them, you know...."Yes, I know"....And we also had..... Then our receptionist knocked on the door an reminded me that we had a waiting room full of ladies with full bladders waiting for their ultrasounds. (Ladies can get extremely nasty when their bladders are about to burst.) I told the gentleman that I would visit him during lunch to talk some more. But, the ultrasound was the last thing he needed and he was already discharged from the hospital by lunchtime. :-( If you know an old timer, talk to him. I wish I had done more of this during my younger days in VA Hospitals in the 1970's. You get to paint the colours in yourself. Well, no one can quarrel with their interpretation of the exact shades, anyway. Yours, James D. As a less experienced modeller, I found it relatively straightforward, and I painted my own lozenge colours in the outlines. Never did the rib tapes though. Not too much rigging but if you want to do it fully, I've seen pictures with the tail rigging that looks tricky.
