Given my criticisms it might seem surprising that I think this kit is better than others, but it has huge potential to make an extraordinary model. Plenty of others to nominate for once, thanks to Toko and now Flashback. A good year for modelling minimalists. 1/48 Eduard Albatros D.III Also number one in part on account of potential, but also for being an excellent, accurate and *important* subject. With this kit as basis and simple scratchbuilding skills, one could make a D.III, OAW D.III, D.I, D.II, W.4, OEF D.III (53 ser) and with a little more work a 153 series. And thanks to Paschendale half the work is done for the D.I and D.II if you choose expediency over cost and time. (honourable mention to the Eduard Nie-17 too) FMP French Aircraft Primarily for the scope. While it has errors and some annoying inconsistencies it covers a vast range which simply plugged a gap in available resources in one fell swoop. Decals - none, since I haven't bought a *new* set this year, but honourable mention to A/G for a catalogue which contains both general and aircraft specific markings that set my juices a flowing. I use the same method with 100% results but let me just add one more tip: by the time you remove the tissue from the cockpit or cowling it'll be dry and rock hard, so sometimes it may do a bit of damage to tiny parts when pulling out. To avoid this just moisten the tissue again with a drop or two of water and then you can pull it out without fear of breaking anything. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 18:17:22 -0500 From: "Steven M. Message-ID: <199901100908_MC2-661B-72F7@compuserve.com> Steven, Yes, the Voisin is finished and it was as big of a challenge as I have ever had. The hard part is the very poor instruction sheet. It points to places that a part goes and then leaves you hanging. Reference material is skimpy at best. But it is finished. My scanner is up and running and very soon I will have photos of the Voisin for all to see. It is a hard kit to build but, oh, is it beautiful. Next project is already underway. The TOKO Hansa Brandenberg W29 is about 40% complete. I have not built a W29 since the Veeday kit about 100 years ago. I will do Christiansen's plane but will have to make the decal for it. One very interesting point about the kit. Have you ever seen a German WW1 plane with a British gun ring? Well, you will with the Toko kit. Go figure. Oh, well, I have a large number of German gun rings from Aeroclub. I may be able to correct this problem. ;-) I'm ready for paint which may go on today. Will keep you posted. You have an interesting project with the Testors Nie 17. But the Italian color scheme is beautiful. I did the Voisin in the Italian colors. Let us know how its going. I know this works in IE not sure about Navigator, but it should be similar. Best kit 1/72: Toko came as a fresh breeze on the 1/72 front, and given that all their kits are similar in quality terms, I nominate the full bunch. Best decal: don't know if issued in 98 but Carpena's Guynemer et les cigognes sheet is pretty good (and was the only on-topic decal sheet I bought last here so not much to choose from) Best Book: I'm still waiting for "Guynemer - Les avions d'un As" published by the guys of Avions. It should be a very good book both for history minded people and for modelers. AFAIK there's also a chapter entirely devoted to the restoration of the Vieux Charles that hangs from the ceilling at Le Bourget, with plenty of shots of the naked beast. Will let you know more detail when I get mine (which I hope will happen next week). Other than that I also enjoyed reading the Storks. Message-ID: Technically, I know this is all off-topic, but we are using this to save on- topic materials so..... I am really glad that Fernando asked about this. I used to be able to pluck .jpg images from the internet all the time. Recently, I had to re-load my aol software and now my mouse has changed its selections - when I press the right button (as Len suggests) I now only get the HTML / TEXT options mentioned by Fernando, but no .jpg option. I was going to bother aol about this, but I have a hunch that the answer is so simple that I should be able to figure it out. However, now that others have asked as well, I am thinking that there are a few of us list members having a problem with this sort of thing. Anyone have any ideas on this? Yes, IIRC several German manufacturers used thinly disguised copies of Scarff rings. That is only about 1.5 x the going rate for a used copy... Hi Mike! It'd be great to get it at a lower rate -- who'd ever pass up getting *anything* for a lower rate? -- if you can find one that inexpensive. Do you know where? Cuz I've been looking for ages for various things in the same vein, and cannot find them. Have I missed out on a source? My theory on such things is, if you can't find 'em anywhere save at a slightly greater price, if it's not unreasonable, take the greater price. Cheers, Sharon (Who finally found someone with the Royal Guardsmen's recordings about Snoopy vs. You-Know-Who, and paid what they asked, thus ending a ten-year search.... ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 16:12:56 -0500 From: "Steven M.
