We were tooling along quite sedately over the Hudson and I thought it would be a good time to change film in my brand-new Yashica FXD. I had just closed the back of the camera when it rose up off my lap in an odd sort of gravity-defying manouver. I snatched it before it sailed out of the cockpit, and looking out over the cowl noticed the ground spread out in front of us like a topographic map. Slowly I realized we were in a nose dive... for the next five or ten minutes we hit every attitude except inverted, which apparently regulations forbade (boo). Great fun, but I was glad I'd held off from the chili dogs before takeoff. If you ever find yourself down this way again, please let me know! (Snip of long winded description) Okay folks, I've done what I said. A doctor friend once joked to me the gynocologists and proctologists don't pass their finals until they can carpet a hallway through the keyhole. Well, what I say is "WIMPS !" I also expended at least 5 years supply of bad language and a fair percentage of whats left of a lifetime of patience. There had to be a better way. So this afternoon I ripped another D.Va kit off the shelf and mocked up the same essential parts in under an hour (without painting, and without too great regard for the accuracy of the parts) In essence I built BOTH pulleys into the port half, with the startboard pulley attached by the "wires" only. Too damn simple *but* you have to use rigid "wires", a problem solved by using ceramic fibre rigging material which I received from Mike "The Modelhound" Franklin with some kits a few years ago. This stuff has the benefit, aside from being utterly rigid in short lengths, of being the same colour and near as dammit the same diameter as the thread used elsewhere for rigging. The only minor problem was getting the geometry just right so that the pulley nestled up against the lower fuselage longeron of the other half as the halves came together, and this took about 20 of the 60 minutes I spent. It also occured to me that cheating would work well. The pulleys are actually about 6" aft of the firewall bulkhead, and one could be properly attached, then the other held by a short false longeron running forward to the bulkhead on the other side. The longeron piece would need to be of brass or similar or it'd bend when rigging, but in the deep dark crannies of the fuselage foot well any imprecision of fit between false longeron, fuselage side and the vestigial longeron aft of the pulley should be invisible. So. Enough is enough. Time for my Valiums. Up to that point the highlight of my life had been purchasing an Aurora Albatros CIII for $10 only to get it home and find it also contained a Gotha GV still in the bag! Mr. King's Tiger is a rare pre-war DH82A. Earlier that week I had been reading someone's memoirs (possibly Cecil Lewis, can't remember now) and they had mentioned how the DeHavilland Moth handled more like the SE5 than any other aircraft they had flown. I mentioned this to Mr. King and in the ensuing conversation an offer was made and money changed hands. As I was strapping in to the front cockpit Mr. King asked me if I was a pilot to which I fibbed slightly and said yes (I had about 20 hrs solo but no license, I did explain this to him, honest). His next words took a minute to sink in. He said something like "The rigging's a little slack. She's a little out of trim so you'll find you'll need lots of left rudder". He said he would shake the stick when we reached altitude and I could take it. We trundled along the grass past the small fleet of WW1 replicas and assorted biplanes, turned into the wind and we were off. The Tiger climbed steadily and rapidly. We levelled of at about 2000 ft and the stick waggled. I looked around to make sure and got a thumbs up. I planted my feet on the rudder and commenced a very ginger turn to the left. What a feeling! With a stick in my hand I felt I was truly flying, not driving like with the 'steering column' of a spam can Cessna. I thought I could feel the slip against the side of my face and corrected with rudder accordingly. After a couple of shallow 360s left and right and a shallow dive and climb the stick waggled again. I held both hands above my head and looked back. Mr. King dipped a wing and pointed downwards. There below us was the 1929 New Standard biplane steaming along above the trees with its unsuspecting load of tourists, it's sesquiplane form looking for all the world like a big fat 'Arry Tate on a photo shoot. One wing over and down we went. The nimble little Moth screamed earthward past the Standards tail. The spring loaded airspeed indicator on the port strut strained against the back plate. The stick suddenly slammed back and up we went like a yo-yo. The huge Standard hung in the air seemingly perched above our gravity tank. The sharp crackle of twin Spandaus shattered the air as the smell of cordite filled my nostrils. A white hot searing pain as something plucked at my Sidcot. They had seen us coming and were returning fire with their Canon (and Minolta). The earth turned over and began falling toward us. The sky turned grey, then red, then black... As the dim light returned, I felt the cool green grass beneath my cheek and I became aware of a pair of white, hairy legs looming above me. "Algy, er... Bob" I croaked, "I'm done for,... go,... avenge me... and don't forget your camera...! Sorry for the off topic driveling. I guess It's time to go back to work.
