Message-ID: Hello, About a year ago, a thread went around where listmembers lamented their worst modeling disasters. I too can now address this topic. Last night, bound and determined, I finally finshed off my LVG C.VI. It was a proud moment for me, because the Pegasus kit was very difficult and took a lot of coaxing to get together. For some time I looked at it on the shelf - my enemy for three months was now my friend. This evening my wife called me at work - very distraught and on the verge of tears. She had got home and while admiring my handywork (she is an understanding soul), accidentally knocked the model off the shelf (really, it was an accident). What can you do? I got home and inspected the battle damage: Upper wing dislodged. Rigging totally shot. Control horns busted. Gun, prop, rudder, exhaust and elevator knocked off. Pretty much my last month's worth of work. Much consoling was necessary to keep the poor woman from completely breaking down - but I say, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." It may take some time, but the second build will be better than the first (I hope!). For others on the list who've lost whole shelves full of models - I now understand. Carry on... Last night was a disasterous night for me too! I'm moving and have been boxing up models for the short trip across town. One box was nearly full, packed neatly and firmly with seven 1/72 scale models (from an off-topic era that did not feature propellors, but still worthy models). Then, my three year old son decided to have one of those spastic goofy spells that three year olds are prone to do, and off the table went my seven models! In one clean swoop, the entire box, in slow motion no less, upturned and spilled its contents onto a hard tile floor. Now, I've seen crash footage on TV, and once I saw a car flip off an overpass, but I've never seen destruction on such a scale (relatively speaking) as I saw when those seven models hit. Ouch. I'm not trying too hard to salvage the fuel tanks from under the bookshelf, or to fish the several sets of landing gear and ordnance from the fireplace- I'll probably never get around to rebuilding them. My three year old's response was first, "I'm sorry, daddy", then in typical fashion said "can I have them?" Life goes on... Cheers! Scott M. I was only able to go on the Saturday so missed all the judging on Sunday but the WW1 content was fairly extensive. It surprised me that WW1 1/48 was however very rare - only a (nice) Eduard Pfalz sotb. 1/72 on the other hand was everywhere (Matt and the Bittnerettes rejoice!). Even that collossal Zeppelin-Staaken ocean-liner-with-wings, beautifully made and hand lozenged. Lots of nice Skybirds, Meikraft (lovely Caproni), Pegasus, MPM, Toko offerings as well as the more standard fare. I think there was some WW1 armour too but I know nothing about this subject. I enjoyed looking at the models and chatting to friends but the highlight for me is always trawling through the traders stands and this year was particularly well-anticipated as I had sold a whole library of non-modelling books and clutched a hot-handful of pound notes that were earmarked for modelling purchases. I'm afraid I succumbed to the TC Short 184 - the wings on this example are not too bad at all - except that when I got home I found I had two left lower outers and no right lower outer! bummer, bummer, bummer - John Adams immediately offered to take it back but didn't know when he could get another so I opted to keep it and will have to cut and shut the panel ends to use it. (Aside - does anyone have an address for TC so I can write direct? - there's nothing in the kit). I had arrived prepared to be put off the Short but one look inside the box at the size of the monster and it was a must-have. I chatted to John and looked at several built up versions of his Bristol Fighter - one of these went in my bag too - lovely. John said he has made up to master stage, the DH5, DH9, BE2c/d/12a/b kits and these will be released, as funds / business allow. I got the Blue Max Roland here too - and had to swap it for another cos it had two right-hand fuselage sides (not my day). Other stands yielded some good bargains - old Aurora kits etc and oop transfer sheets. I saw stacks of old Airfix and Revell 1/72 WW1 planes and can point anybody in the right direction if they are looking for Hawas or DH2's or Keilkraft Camels or whatever. A Koster SS-D.IV jumped into my hand from somewhere and would not allow itself to be put down! Something very interesting that I saw in the kit swap was a 1/32 resin Junkers D.I by a company called either Escadrille or Lafayette models - I've forgotten which now - Indian Chief logo. It was a beautifully sharp model with lots of detail bits and very tempting but I really am uniscalar and true only to 48 unfortunately. Ah well that's the fix for another year! Total O.D. on purchases - but in my defence m'lud it was only feasible as I'd sold four or five boxes of music books. Now where's the knife and sandpaper, and what will I start first. One night about several years ago: I was not at home. My mother had some laundry that needed hanging out to dry. Since it was raining outside, she decided to look for a convenient spot in the house to put up a temporary laundry line. She found a vacant hook on a wall and used it for one end of the line. On the other side of the room stood my glass case of models. The case was something I inherited from my grandfather who used to own a gunstore, It is large, about a foot deep, six feet wide and 7.5 feet high. The sides were glass and the front was composed of two sliding glass doors. Inside, the glass case protected many years of modelling work, 1/35 scale armour, many conversion and scratchbuild projects included. My mom saw a convenient place on the top to tie the other end of the line. All went well until she started weighing down the line with wet clothes and the inevitable happened.... Well, I took everything in stride, thinking to myself, "This is a good time to start a new collection of BETTER looking models. This incident happened about the same time the DML Fokker Tripe came out. The demise of my armour models left a lot of space future WWI projects. And life goes on.... ********************************************************************* Joey Valenciano WW1 modeller, teacher, jazz musician, joeyval@pusit.admu.edu.ph sitarist tel.
