I'm telling you man, Flexi-files were one the the first technologies gleaned from the Roswell wreckage. Not only that, but the compounds in flexi-files also were used to make the 'Magic Bullet' used in Dallas. 3M is involved in the cover-up. My source was found with his mouth permanantly sealed with an adhesive proven to be of otherworldly origin just hours after he leaked this information to me. I think they're on to me now. Don't know why he felt that way. I ended up with a model of the "Sea Adler" (sp), a WWI German commerce raider. Two Christmases ago, my wife bought me a Curtiss Sparrowhawk. She thought it was a WWI model "like the ones you built as a boy". It reawakened my modeling past and eventually got me here. However, it is still unbuilt in the closet. After 30 years, I needed to practice on *something* so I built a P-40 so I wouldn't butcher a WWI. It was O.K. but it did not compare to the satisfaction I got when I recently finished my "practice" Pfalz D.III, my first WWI model in 30 years. The two wings, the struts, the rigging, the wood grained propellor, the Jasta colors and personal markings, those old eisernerkreuz. Sigh... I have now stocked up on kits and, except for the Sparrowhawk, my closet contains nothing but WWI. So, although I confess, I am invoking the Bill Clinton defense: "Yeah, I had a one-night-stand with that P-40 bimbo. But I didn't come." I was quite serious in my earlier post about the possibility of modelling the Highland Railway during the Great War - it has a lot of possibilities due to the enormous burden thrown on the line in order to keep the Fleet manned and provisioned. Unfortunately there are very few photos of the period -the whole line was seen as being vital to the war and cameras were usually regarded as being unwelcome if not actually proof that the photographer was a dastardly hun spy. Ships - You know, I have this perverse idea about fitting a R/C model K-boat with a real steam plant, but given the problems the originals had this might not be such a good idea - a submarine is generaly considered unsuccessful if it fails to surface after a dive. Very little of this stuff is WWI - only HMS Mohawk, Iron Duke and Warspite out of a dozen and a bit models fall into that category, and Mohawk is in her original state with the semi turtle deck forecastle. A/C - Anything RN goes, with slight excursions into other types from the 'tween wars period and the 1-0-thingy's noted opponent, the Spitfire. This latter vice was due to indoctrination by elderly maiden aunts who live in Kent during the summer of 1940, and would not countenance me buying two bob models of the 1-0-(you know). Crashed 1-0-harumphs are OK though. I'm ever so slowly doing a potted 1/48th history of Naval Eight and it's successor 208 Squadron -I have a Lysander, Hurricane, Hunter and Buccaneer from the later period, and the makings of a Pup and a Tripe in the ready use plastic locker. I have been temporarily converted to the dark side by the Airfix Lightning, and am unrepetant. Growing up in Licolnshire in the sixties means a weakness for things like Vulcans as well. Aside from the Naval Eight thing, WWI content revolves around flying boats and seaplanes. Armour - Once I can get my hands on the necessary info to produce RNAS armoured cars I promise to be faithful to the period - making those wire or wooden wheels will leave little time for anything else. Having seen the confessions of others I feel less unclean than I did before, but there are so many cool models to build - Edwardian railway engines in polished brass and gleaming paint, Victorian screw corvettes, 'tween wars Imperial Airways transports like the Argosy, and the RAF boats like the Perth and Southampton and then those Vulcans - four of them taking off together left an indelible impression on a small boy. Who can resist temptation like that? I'm a sucker for the most involved complicated card models you can find. - ie Wilhelmshaven ship models - if you've never seen one you wouldn't believe the level of detail you can get on, for example, the little Arado floatplane to sit on the catapault on the 1/250 scale Scharnhorst. Each individual turret is a masterpiece. Also Schreiber models of things like Neuschwanstein Castle (half a metre high!) We had a thread about Zeppelins recently and I didn't contribute - but maybe now is the time to mention three card airship models I know of. Schreiber do the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin in 1/200 scale (118 cm long - 25GBP) and PMI do the Hindenburg in 1/500 (19") and USS Macon in 1/350 (27"). They also do a Camel, an Eindecker and a Dr.1, while various others do an Alb D.III, Taube etc. If anybody is interested in these I can give prices and a UK source which does Int'l MO by credit card etc. Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 11:42:29 +0100 From: "Sandy Adam" To: "AAA - WW1 Group" Subject: Fw: De-Lurking Message-ID: <199804201035.LAA19970@beryl.sol.co.uk> > Bob, once more, if you don't mind I shall open this out to the list as > there is quite a bit of typing and some of it may be of interest to others: > > To Bob Pearson: > The best source of original photos I know is the PRO in London - have you > had any dealings with them? > Unfortunately they do not have the resources to carry out searches although > they are quite happy for visitors to do so. Message-ID: <3.0.4.32.19980420080027.00938d20@pop.atl.mindspring.com> I'm having trouble identifying where some of the decals from this kit go. I assume the small rectangle is the foot step. What are the two small circles? And there appear to be two very small white decals, but I can't tell what they are or where they should go. I'd appreciate any help on this. Other interests besides WWI aircraft (which I do both 1/48 and 1/72 in): 1930's 1/48 Aircraft (Navy "Gold Wings", Spanish Civil War) WW2 1/48 Aircraft 1950's 1/48 Jets Ships-all eras and scales WW2 1/35 Armor 1/25 Cars-mostly '60s racing and '20s-'30s era Just picked up a plank-on-frame ship model of the 1790 Enterprise. Brass cannon, cloth sails, etc. Really looking forward to building this one, although it looks like a 2-3 year project. But I figure a modeler *has* to do one of these in his lifetime. Paul A. Does anyone have drawings for the Dove and if so, can I get a copy.
