It's called the Mike Fritz award, and our own Steve Hustad won it the year we sponsored the Nationals. What I liked was at the Nationals last July in Columbus, OH. Not only was the Mike Fritz given out, but so was a new award, the "Rickenbacker" (for the IPMS club of the same name). This was given out to the best non-aircraft WW1 model. Again, Steve Hustad took it last it with "Gorilla's in the Mist". Morane Type I, N etc with "monocoque" fuselages have as their basis the square sectioned framework found on M-S Types G and H fuselages. These pseudo-monocoque fuselages simply have stringers and frame members for attachment of said stringers built around the basic "square" sectioned frame. This is easy to become confused over if you built Revell Type N kits way, way back in the dark ages before Windsock or Datafiles. The big error in the Revell kit was its incorrect pointy fuselage tail cone that is reasonably well corrected on the Temens Type I. I would think that the Type N or I fuselage would be relatively similar to those of the model G or H in terms of overall layout. Certainly there might be some detail variations between the different types, but perhaps this is "lost in the mists of time" to quote an earlier post from today (Thursday). "Austro-Hungarian Army Aircraft of WW1" by Peter Grosz, et al indicates 12 Fokker E.IIIs, not six. The photos show all of them armed with MG's firing through the prop - most of them are Spandau LMG 08s but there is one photo of an E.III with a Schwarzlose M 7/17. The photo is dated May, 1916, and the caption notes, "This machine was one of the few armed with a synchronized Schwarzlose.." The text also notes that the A/H E.IIIs were forbidden to "follow their prey over the line to prevent the synchronization mechanism from falling into enemy hands." So apparently the Austro-Hungarians had effective synchronization gear before 1917. With the Spandau armed E.IIIs, I would assume the German gear was used but the Schwarzlose armed a/c would have required either a "home-brew" synchronizer or some modification of the German gear. (I'm not knowledgeable enough about either machine guns or synchronization gear as to venture a guess as to whether the Spandau synchronization gear could be adapted to the Schwarzlose.)
