I have since discovered that I have at least one Windsock (2/97) with colour photos of a still extant Italian SPAD XIII and I also have a Blue Rider sheet which has suitable decals. AND I have the Aeromaster SPAD sheet which certainly has an Italian SPAD on it, but no instructions, so I don't know if it's a VII or XIII Which brings me to ask - has anyone got the instruction for this sheet, and can spare a Xerox so I can figure out what goes where? You could also use a light table. I made mine from an 18x18" sheet of plate glass, a piece of Mylar drafting film (for the frosted effect), and a porcelain light fixture with a ring-type flourescent bulb in it (these are designed as low energy alternatives to incandescent bulbs for regular tqable lamps). Then you just lay the plastic on top of the drawing and trace. I want to get a list of items available is >this true. TIA >Mike > > Hi Mike, I just got back from the Ryder museum. I use to be on the board of directors, and helped out with the air shows, as well as displayed. I was friends with Frank and Carolyn. Having sold some things to Frank, I had hoped there may be buy back rights, and had sent a written offer to the lawyers a year and a half ago. I never heard anything back. Recently, I had heard that Javiar Arango, (of California, who has a large personal collection of flying, excellent replicas), had sent Chuck Wentworth out to Ryder's, and had bought about 20 WWI motors, (a Mercedes, (I helped Frank get), a 110 LeRhone, other rotaries, Hissos, and some Warners, etc.). He paid, (unconfirmed), $190,000. I had heard rumors of things being sold at bargain prices, and thought I'd better get down there, before everything gets "swooped up". Frank's, wife's, sister Katie, is in charge of disposing of the museum's contents. The museum is closed. You have to make an appointment with Katie to view things, and discuss price, (and she only takes cash, or a cashier's check). I made an appointment, arranged my cash, hopped in a one ton truck, picked up my friend Fred Jungclaus, and hit the road. There is no list being given out, there is no auction to be held, you almost need to already know what was there, and ask if it's still there today. I will not go into a great deal of detail, so as not to take up so much space for this posting, but will simply say "There are no bargains". Basically, she has had three appraisals, and all of Frank's cancelled checks for everything he bought. If you can't offer what Frank paid for it, or the appraised value, (which ever is higher), you are not buying it. One example, I recently had a painting done for me by Jim Dietz, (I love it), and knew Frank owned several paintings by Dietz. I know what they cost, and asked her about several, granted some may have gone up in value, such as "Mud in Your Eye", some I'm sure had not. When I asked how much for one that I knew should be in the $5000 range, if commissioned today, she stuck out her hand and rotated it like a bell crank, saying, "8000,.... It's gonna be in the 8000 range,.... maybe". This "maybe" was certainly implied to mean, "Could be more", as we learned on other items. On the Mercedes, I found it in Belgium, and had arranged for a good friend of mine to pick it up for Frank for $27,000. In my letter to the lawyers, I had offered $27,000, but she said it had sold for _much_ more! Wow!, I was surprised, and relieved. I was a bit in wonder, and can hardly see how Javiar struck a deal, he must have simply paid, whatever she wanted. One item Fred wanted to buy was a Proctor Albatros DVa, new in the box. It was already sold for $650, (probably what Frank bought it for). They still have a Proctor DRI, new in the box. We were given the tour by Kenny, the former mechanic and now caretaker. All the replica aircraft are still there, she wants $99,000 for the Albatros DVa with a Ranger. A couple of the planes have been sold. There were quite a few model aircraft about. I believe if you had donated something to the museum, there is a chance you can get it back. Something strange about going to a sale of a friend who's now dead. It's sort of like you might buy some of his books, but you don't want to buy his jacket, or shoes, and seeing some of those planes makes me think of Frank so much, it's like they were his jackets and shoes. Needless to say, we came back with nothing, but I feel better that I took the expense and time to check it out. To surmise, if you want to pay retail for something that is at Ryder's, you can get it. The rare and hard to get items will sell first. Most likely her prices in the future will come down, and if you want something, for, as she termed it, "flea market prices", you can send a fax with offers, and she will put them on file. She's booked up with appointments for the next week, with several museums coming. Dave PS: If there is anything in particular you were wanting, you can ask me, and if I can remember seeing it I'll be glad to help. On the side of the fuselage, From front to back, the decals go; Roundel, Dragon crest, and then the red bars labeled 10 & 12. these are vertical. the red bars labled 11 goes on the top of the fuselage just behind where the headrest tapers into the fuselage and they run lengthwise. The sheet says that #'s 10 and 11 go on the sides with # 12 on top, but looking at the transfers, my sheet seems to have #'s 10 & 12 tapered to follow the lines of the fus, while # 11 is squared and should go on top. As far as paint goes, the instructions call for standard french cammo w/ CDL undersides. Metal under surfaces and landing gear struts are painted a matching pale yellow. Hope this helps. Any questions, let me know. I can't remember the name at this moment -- maybe "stickyback" -- that is clear with an adhesive on the back side. It can be printed on. The manager of my service bureau suggested it to me when I said I was trying to print onto decal film. Has anybody tried this? Seems to me that it might not be flexible enough to conform to 3D surfaces. Jim Alley P.S. If anybody has info on this, please email me directly.
