I got more plastic than I know what to do with, but pride of place, at least as for as the list goes, was the Dragon/DML SPAD XIII. I just love it. What was truly amazing, and quite serendipitous, is that the gift-giver managed, without knowing any better, to buy me the only one of the Dragon/DML "Knights of the Air" kits I didn't already have. But looking over what a beautiful kit it is, I am wondering how I am going to work up the courage to slice into the plastic to trim and round the wing tips for an earlier, French example. And though the list probably doesn't want to hear it, that new Tamiya Mosquito isn't so bad itself. Merry Xmas. Dane ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Dec 1998 12:25:36 -0700 From: "D. About all I can say about the Voisin at this time is "Kids, don't try this at home." This is not an easy kit. I have build it in assemblies. The tail is painted, decaled and rigged. The fuselage is complete, lower wings mounted, decaled and rigged in the landing gear, upper wing is painted and decaled. The instructions are the short coming of this kit. They are very vague as to locations of parts, especially if you do not have much reference material. I went back thru all of my Windsocks and can find nothing on the Voisin. There are a few pieces that I have no idea where they go and the instructions really don't say. They just point to an area. Can anyone point me to a reference that shows some of the little pieces that are defying me? He also dodged the hand-painted/printed lozenge finish and instead of opting for an overall pale blue finish which was probably applied to a few G.Vs (the Aurora kit is closest to a G.V), chose the dk. blue/ dkgray scheme of some of the LVG G.IVs. The drawings in the article are wrong, but oh, well. Although there is some useful content, you may want to supplement your references with copies of the Woodman article. Very nice. Add to Nieuport kits a vacuform from Joystick that builds up into a 24/24 bis/27. It has 5 metal parts, decals for four planes (one Italian, two Polish and one Russian) plus plastic strut material. The Italian color scheme is wild so I know which one I will build. There is brief history, an exploded view and color guide. The molding is crisp and the plastic sheet is thick enough to work with. By my knowledge of vacs, I would rate it around an 8. On the SS D.1, Windsock had a very easy conversion from the 17. Took only about an extra hour of work to make a nice looking little plane. On closer inspection of the scrapbooks, I happen to have copies of this article, and it is an excellent description of the Gothas (incl. color notes) rather than a corrections article on the Aurora/K&B model. Although pointing out specific errors with the kit (in a concluding paragraph), there are so many of them tha Woodman actually concludes that it is more of a toy than a scale representation of the aircraft. The best part of the article are the 1/72 G.IV/V drawings (which are part of it, AFAIK), which in many ways are superior to Stair's plans in the datafile. Just ask David. The most acurrate Gotha kit out right now is the 1/72 Rareplanes vac. Dennis, I've only been skimming list mail for a while, so I've missed most of the discussions on the Voisin kit(mostly because it's the wrong scale). So what Voisin is it that you're building? there's a chapter on the Type 3 L in the Color Profiles book. It has five view drawings along with ten or so contemporary photos and about as many color profiles of the different types(from 1 to 10). I was hoping to get to a copy machine this weekend to copy the Morane section for another listee, Send me your snail mail address off list and I'll copy the Voisin chapter while I'm there. Hth... If you look at the Correction/Conversion article for the Revell/ESCI Nie.17, I include notes in their from that article. I actually started on one, until I purchased both the Meikraft kit as well as the Aero Image, and put the conversion away. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to continue with the conversion. Just how many SSW D.I's does one need? ;-) Matt Bittner ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. A totally off topic kit from my wife's best friend, A tamiya F-84G. My other interest is post WWII aircraft, having grown up on Air Force bases all over the place. However, not to be worried, my spouse came through with a gift certificate to the local shop, Viking Hobbies. So I'm off to to see the lovely proprietor later today. I know that she has some Eduard stuff hiding in the back. Happy New Year to all.
