I was planning on adding new 'bearers' since photos in the Datafile and In Action show that the hole you see through the mesh is right behind it (1" or so). The kit has bearer 6-8" behind it. The DML kit has these parts (unmarked, and not in the directions). The only other changes I planned on was adding some detail to the sides of the cockpit, and squaring the wings since Luke's would most certainly have been a later version. Robert, that sounds like a neat idea! Zeppelin's visit over here during the Late Unpleasantness.... :-) That would work! Harry Turtledove has a speculative fiction series out, in which the South wins The War; the newest volume is called _Over Here_ and has the fascinating cover design of a doughboy clambering out of a trench -- in front of the US Capitol building.... ;-) I haven't read it yet, but I understand that Zeppelin is a character in the story. And I put my leetle credentials into the Southern nomenclature camp: from the Confederacy's viewpoint, it wasn't a civil war by the direct definition of such. :-) So in spite of the fact that my great-grand-dad, Merrill Hutchinson, fought in a blue uniform -- getting plenty of exercise these days, I don't doubt, whirling in his crypt that his only great-granddaughter is such an unreconstructed Southerner! -- the War will always be, for me, the War Between the States. Side fact that is WAY off topic: did you know that legally, the South was right about secession?? :-) The classic textbook on Constitutional law used at West Point, even today, to train the young'uns in the matter of that precious document they will swear to protect when they are commissioned -- has a landmark chapter in which it discusses the fact that the right of a state to secede from the Union is entirely permissible. Does that mean we should sue the Federal Gov't. for all that property damage? Anyway, back to the Great War (as opposed to THE War). :-) Cheers, y'all -- Sharon, Bostonian by birth, Virginian by the grace of God. As soon as I learn to navigate here I'm sure I will enjoy it. I have always enjoyed the Sacramento contest because of one main thing. You recognize WW1 actually happened. Here in Fresno, there is no category for WW1 or even Bi wing. You have to compete in 1/72nd single engine. Yep, against Mustangs, P-47's, you name it. I do not attend the Fresno contests for that reason. I have been coming to Sacramento for about 15 years now. Keep up the good work. It appears that my fore warning about some of the members here (no names) was justified. But I am guilty as charged. I do apply GLUE (oh gasp) to plastic kits until they are (ready?) finished. Many of my kit starting friends (the ones that still speak to me that is) look at me strange about this substance called glue and its place in plastic modelling. When I say its to stick the parts together to complete the kit, I can tell they are puzzled. Why do you want to do that?, they inquire. It looks so good in the box and they are easier to stack in the closet in the box than with all of those little parts stuck together. I will look forward to bantering back and forth with all of you but be patient with me as I learn to navigate thru cyberspace. My tech support (my bride of only a few days) is teaching me how to use the computer. So forgive me if I am slow in replying. I am a builder of plastic and that's where most of my spare time goes. Doesn't this make for a poor appearance of the decal, especially up close? Or do solid colors appear blended better than, say, the dots making up a color photograph, where the colors continually vary, which is the example I saw. Best regards, Jack ------------------ Original text From: Crofoot , on 12/9/98 2:53 AM: John, Just wanted to make one correction regarding your info on the Alps printers. The 1000 is designed to print white and metallics. For the kind of decal work that we need, the 1000 is probably a better choice than the 1300. The 1300 includes options for photorealistic printing but from everything that I've heard the cartridges used in the process don't work on decal paper. Appearantly great minds do work in the same direction as I've been working on a similar approach to taking the pain out of lozenge. If you have a chance, contact me and we can compare notes. I read somewhere that there would be a Revell F0okker D VII correction article in one of the Magazines soon and it may be Finescale Modeler. There are several people who have worked out the major error corrections. Perhaps one of them is a member and they will respond with a "How To" article. It would be foolish for Revell to quit making it. The thing sells to well. I've been working on a set of decals for the Toko Nieuport 11. On my first attempt I did get decals with a very noticable dot pattern. After doing some experimentation with settings I've been able to come up with markings that have absolutely no grain. I have also read that some people double print in order to eliminate the grainy effect. The Alps is really flexible in its settings range and there are appearantly a number of ways to solve the problem. Robert, I'm not totally sure about the ability of the Alps to print legal size paper. I checked the set-up menu and there is provision for user defined paper size. Also, one of the predefined settings is for A4 paper so it is definate that the printer will go beyond 11 inches. When I bought mine, the only that I could justify the expense was the intention to use it for utility printing. Although the Alps in not as fast as a laser it is definately faster than my old Epson inkjet and the black and white print quality is equal to any laser that I've seen, Tim ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 06:31:47 -0800 From: mgoodwin@ricochet.net To: wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu Subject: Re: Datafile for Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter Message-ID: <36727E53.365D@ricochet.net> mkendix wrote: > > I am attempting to purchase the Datafile for the Sopwi1th 1/2 Strutter > (#34) but cannot locate a vendor. Before you spend the money, it is my duty as list librarian to inform you that the list library has a copy of said datafile to loan for the price of postage. You may hang on to it for a month or so before returing it. Cheers, Riordan ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 1333 **********************
