I was leafing through my weapons encyclopaedia the other night and came across the entry for the French pre-dreadnought "Jaureguiberry." Man! What character! Looks a lot like a flat iron with gun turrets and a conning tower. I can't help but love such ugly things. Even more enticing is that the ship managed to survive the war, even though its captain predicted that it should blow up, founder, or catch fire easily enough. Anyway, I would like to try my hand at scratchbuiling the "Jaureguiberry," albeit in a small scale like 1/600 or even 1/700. So, does anyone know anything about this lovely ugly duckling, such as where a guy could get his hands on more photos and some decent plans? Are there any photographs of these a/c available? Well, yes, I have a photo of Guynemer's Ni.11 "Le Vieux Charles" - page 4, "Aces and Aeroplanes 2, Georges Guynemer" published by our old friends at Albatros Publications. But, lacking the Toko kit, I really can't comment on the accuracy of their decals. The photo shows what appears a standard Ni.11 in what seems to be French "yellow". Other than the national insignia, the only apparent marking is the "LE VIEUX CHARLES" on the starboard side of the aircraft, begining at about the rear of the cockpit opening and continuing back to about 1/2 way between the rudder and the cockpit. (Actually, the marking reads the other way, from rear to front - but I hope you get my drift anyway.) The lettering is all capital lettering, and in a serif style similar to the lettering style seen on the rudder serial numbers (i.e. there is a variation in thickness between the vertical and horizontal strokes on the letters.) Note that unlike the SPADs, the Ni.11 was "Le Vieux Charles" rather than just plain old "Vieux Charles". (pun intended!) >2. The Toko SSW D.III/IV kit has markings for an Alfred Lerner? I do not have anything books on her specifically, but I have found several good photographs in various books which are sharp enough to show some detail. I also have a three-view in Tony Gibbons' _The Complete Encyclopedia of Battleships and Battlecruisers_, (however this volume is not really to be relied on as plans) and a tiny though accurate side view in _Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1860-1905_. I have corresponded with the Musee de la Marine about this (and other) ships of the period and they have offered me some photographs, but claim to have no plans. If you want, I can send you copies of the photos I have, and all the other material. Additionally, the Musee de la Marine does have plans for Massena, and there are commercially available plans for La Hoche (original configuration - I did a model of this one too) and the Charlemagne class. Not sure about a Nie.11, but there's a photo of him next to a Nie.16 while he flew with the Lafayette Escadrille. However, he must have, because according to his bio in _Lafayette Escadrille Pilot Biographies_ "...in November of 1915 Nungesser was sent to Nancy, to Escadrille N.65. As soon as he had been issued his new Nieuport fighter, he had had his personal insignia painted on its sides..." Hmm...the caption of the photo in the Biographies book may be in error. According to Rimell, he was flying a Nie.17 while he flew with N.124. Unfortunately I have found no photo's of his Nie.11 nor a good shot of a Nie.16. HOWEVER - and that is capitalized for a reason - in the WW1 field, anything is possible. Plus, if he was wounded in Americal's presentation, then maybe he received a new aircraft for the other being shot up. Anything is possible. I am >wondering if the > decals for Guynemer's "View Charles" and Kazakov's "Skull & >Crossbones" >N.11's are > accurate? Are there any photographs of these a/c available? While I'm not lucky enough to own the Aces & Aeroplanes book on Guynemer (the only older Albatross publication I wish I had), I have a copy of the Americal instructions for N.3 (until I buy a set for myself - which I will!). In comparing the two for Guynemer's Nie.11, March 1916: Toko's "Vieux-Charles" is way too big. Americal shows "Le Vieux Charles" as a smaller script, that fits under the cockpit, extending past both sides of the cockpit only a little. Unfortunately, I can't find any photo's of this machine. Toko and Americal also don't agree on the serial. Toko has it as "315", while Americal has it as "N 836" (yes, the "N" is missing from the Toko sheet). However, Americal lists it with a question mark, so it could be 315. Here is Americal's paragraph: "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first purpose-built fighter aircraft that Guynemer flew. Exactly when he got it is undertain and some of his February 1916 victories may have been scored in it. (My note: The time that Americal lists as when their profile was made is 12 Mar 1916.) He got one on the date shown in the Verdun sector and was wounded, almost certainly in this aricraft, five days later. He had been promoted to sous-lieutenant on 4 March. The finish is like the preceding Nieuport 10s, but without the black longeron tapes (there is a photo of him in a bebe that has such tapes, however). "Le Vieux Charles" is in a very neat block lettering style, high on the fuselage sides and mostly aft of the cockpit." Besides the unfortunately out of print Aces & Aeroplanes, another source you might check is the really nice book put out by Grub Street titled _The Storks_. I had a chance to look at a copy when Greg VW met over lunch, and this book is a must for French fans, as well as those wanting to use Americal's decals to build a bunch of Le Cigognes machines. I don't have the Imperial Russian FMP book, so I can't comment on the accuracy of Kazakov's Nie.11. I have only seen photo's a his pranged Nie.17. HTH. The added a 'drop' of black to the lid of silver to come up with a 'slightly' darker shade of silver. Using the smallest brush available you can replicate the sworl by following the patterns on a photo of the aircraft. If you've over done it merely take the same brush (cleaned) and use the original silver color to restore the areas. When dry (two days?) take a soft cloth and lightly buff the cowling. For CDL on German a/c I used Floquil Mud straight from the bottle, the German CDL appears to be several shades darker that the British or French finishes. For the British CDL I am using a bottle of Floquil Antique White with a few drops of Floquil Mud to tint it. The work required to reach that outcome is only taken into account as a (rare) tie breaker. Any model will get judged on the same criteria, assuming competency and integrity on the part of the contest organizers and judges. Therefore, if your goal in modeling is to win a trophy, your best bet is the best kit with the most etched brass.
