I have some material on Latvian aviation at home,so I cant be too specific here, but I believe that if the Latvians obtained an LVG it was either interred as a forced-down German aircraft (in which case it presumably had the German lozenge fabric) or it was bought from a third party after the war (in which case it could be anything). I am in Newfoundland on vacation this week, but when I return I will look it up in Irbitis` book - he claims to list all aircraft that were with the Latvian air force. (quote from my wife) Okay, let's start another thread....I assume this has been hashed out before, but... WEATHERING WWI AIRCRAFT: Having been a modeler for years, I have read about article out there about weathering aircraft...but know very few techniques on making a stringbad look like it has been "rode hard and put away wet" I figure, mud on wheels, undersides and tailskid area, how about things like fading fabrics, gunpowder stains, oil stains, battle damage....Were WW1 aircraft maintained in the field in pristine colors? Really hard to get a handle on this from existing photos (B/W) that I have seen. There, I feel better now... Can of worms time. For some reason most of us prefer to weather them little if at all. Romatic schemes lead to pristine finishes like knights of yore riding ito battle in their Sunday best Hollywood style. But.... here's a handy hint on oil staining. You know the way the front of the axle wing fairing on a Fokker D.VIII looks? Kinda like a garage floor, all stained because every drop of oil from the engine drips right on down. Try mixing a touch of Paynes Grey oil colour with Future/Kleer/Shine and dripping it strategically exactly like the real stuff. Looks pretty convincing IMHO May work with the similar lower stringer edge stains too but I like that area a bit cleaner - not every aircarft looked entirely crappy Shane ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Aug 1998 10:02:09 -0400 From: "Steven M. Looks pretty convincing IMHO Shane: Sounds like an excellent technique. Please educate me. I thought acrylic & oil based finished didn't mix well. Is the Paynes Gray an artist's oil and do they mix with acrylic? Mike: FWIW: Burnt castor oil can be simulated with Glosscote laquer mixed with just a bit of brown & even less aluminum. Blob on a spot and use air only from the airbrush to blow it back like the slip stream would have. Practice first as the air from the airbrush dries the laquer fast. You get one or two shots to make it look realistic. sp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Aug 1998 10:21:26 -0400 (EDT) From: aew (Allan Wright) To: wwi Subject: The Problem with the list Message-ID: <199808071421.KAA01433@pease1.sr.unh.edu> Hi all, More information on our little problem.....
