Anyone with a methodology they'd > like to share for soldering work in very small items ( PLEASE ) David, Silver solder takes more heat than the tin-lead solder used in electronic = assembly. You will have to use a soldering gun, or large iron, to get = enough heat. Mine has a 1200-1400 watt power rating. Clean the joint = areas with very fine sandpaper--steel wool usually leaves a film of oil on = the surfaces. Once cleaned, use a compatible flux on the joint areas to = help deep-clean them while soldering. It is vital to getting a good bond = that the areas to be joined have all traces of any lacquer, oil, and = oxidation removed. That is what flux does. Have the parts held together, using a heat-proof jig or vise, but not big = enough to act as a heat-sink and keep the parts from heating up properly. = Apply heat to the surfaces to be joined. Wait briefly until they heat up, = and then apply the solder to the joint--NOT the soldering gun tip. If you = have enough heat and a good clean joint, the solder will flow by capillary = action to bond the two pieces together. You can tell when enough solder = has been applied--the joint is filled nicely, and the solder should appear = smooth and shiny. Silver solder is preferred on brass and other fine work = due to it's strength and polishing attributes. Paul A. Von Hippel flew at least two "Blitz" D.Vas. One had mauve/green over blue wings, as is included in the Eduard kit. (There should be black full chord block letter Hs under the lower wings, not included on the Eduard decal) Another had lozenge wings with white block capital Hs under the lower wings. There may have been a third "Blitz", according to the Americal booklet with their Jasta 5 decals. In my work with the Ferko collection at UTD I have seen at least two Blitzen--on one the blitz is markedly more angular than the other. In any case, the fuselage color should be a mid-grey color, noy silver, as is often depicted. Hope this helps--feel free to ask me more either on or off- List. Have Fun!! Hope I don't veer too much off topic. Also, I must at this point state that I'm not much of a historian but: *** I don't think he's was so screwed up as to dream up the "fin sol" but he may have helped in carrying it out. *** I would consider him more of a military man as opposed to someone like Himmler (chicken farmer?). He would probably been more worried about the losing war on all fronts rather than exterminating helpless people. *** I've seen a documentary on cable on the Nuremburg trials. It said that the allies tried to get as many top German officials into as much hot water as possible. The idea that Goering was fundamental in the "f-s" may have been floated. *** Same docu said that the main player in the trials (U.S.) lost interest when the cold war was going into full swing, lucky for the less known "war criminals". *** Many historians feel that Germany has always looked at attrition as a viable strategy. Since she's surrounded by potential adversaries, during a war, the traditional procedure was supposedly to kill as many of the enemy as possible. That way, even if Germany lost the war, at least the victor would have been weakened. Thinking along this line, the f-s would not have been such a weird idea to some. More thoughts on Goering: *** He was a party animal who loved to overindulge. Look at his size, his boar/deer hunting sprees, his extravagant parties. *** He wanted power. He, as well as everyone else was powerless in post war (WWI) Germany. Hitler promised everything, so Goering latched on to him and became his "yes" man. Number one "yes" man gets number two spot on the power heirarchy. ********************************************************************* Joey Valenciano WW1 modeller, teacher, jazz musician, joeyval@philonline.com. sitarist Metro-Manila, Philippines "The more you know, the more you don't know." ********************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 12:46:47 -0700 From: Mike Fletcher To: wwi Subject: Re: jasta 5 Message-ID: <35C21F27.843C7F65@mars.ark.com> I'd like to see a copy also TIA Mike Fletcher mdf@mars.ark.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 16:46:30 -0400 From: Don Rinker To: wwi Subject: Re: Nieuport Le Rhone Message-ID: <35C22D26.B6FFC546@fast.net> A little late on this, but remember that the wires are just that, copper alloy wire with no insulation or other coatings, and they should appear bowstring tight... Any >suggestions? > >Best regards, > >Jack > Having Just completed a Jasta 5 D.Va a couple of months ago, the terror is still with me. It is a masking challenge. I use a product called Parafilm "M". Lately it has been available from Testors (on their display rack with the brushes, blades and other modeling tools they offer.) It is a clear plastic that when stretched out becomes very plyable and thin. It has a low tack to it and can be rolled up to make soft demarkation lines or pressed out on a part to act as "Masking tape". I painted the red on the tail first and then covered the tailplane surfaces with the Parafilm. It can be cut with a razor blade or scalpel leaving a mask around the edges of the fins. I used a rule to make the edge even and then shot the dark green color. The Parafilm peels off the edge of the fins very cleanly. There was an excellent article on this stuff in Fine Scale Modeler a couple of years ago. I have used it alot since finding it. I will look up the issue with the article and post the info. Works for me....(also used the technique for a SPAD XIII camoflage pattern) Mikedc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 17:50:08 -0600 From: "D.
