Also some may have had the single dark colour on the uppersurfaces much as many of the Nieuport 10 fighters had...the only example off the top of my head is an RNAS machine though it could possibly have been PC10 or painted locally. Some of the later Russian N.16 may have been silver but these were late survivors and IMHO unlikely to have been originally doped that way and I have found no evidence that any N.11s were silver doped (of course that doesn't mean that none were but...). It can be done - I have successfully opened up the vent louvres on the M/g cover plates of Bristol Bulldog ( Inpact/ Lindberg ) These little suckers are tiny too !!! You require the patience of a spider and a very steady hand but here's how it's done 1. thin the INNER surface below the moulded louvres ( I used the end of a jeweller's file ( round in section BTW ) AND BE CAREFUL !!! NOT TOO THIN !! Hold the work up to the light or light scource as you go The axiom is always you can take it off but once it's cut you cann't put material back ( at least not without a lot of trouble ) 2. take the secret ingredient A FINE SYRINGE - Note the sharpness of the point, the steep angle of the point and the razor sharpness of the sides of the point, these features are the essential elements of the required tool 3. FROM HERE ON IN ITS MAINLY A MATTER OF VERY PATIENT SCRAPING - work slowly ! start by gentley pressing the point of the tool into the centre of the blocked over louvre opening and then make 2-4 lighter point impressions towards the sides of the desired opening, then scratch out the material between the indentations and repeat until you are through to the other side ... Cann't emphasise enough the need to TAKE IT SLOWLY Don't use excessive pressure either, especially as you get near the inner side - You'll "break through" quite quickly enough when youv'e chipped out enough material The Result is very, very pleasing and it adds just one more element of realism NOW TO RESOLVE THE GREAT BUG-BEAR - rigging fittings ! hope this helps all DAVID ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 09:06:48 +0800 From: Joey Valenciano To: wwi Subject: Re:Goering Aicraft Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19980731090648.00b58dfc@philonline.com.ph> > Yep...I had the same problem, but finally got around to doing the one with >the black fuselage and white spinner. Laws wrote: > Does one have to use silver solder ? Anyone with a methodology they'd > like to share for soldering work in very small items ( PLEASE ) Here's the little bit I know. 1)Solder flows towards the heat source. 2)Flux helps it do this. What this means is a) use flux, and b)always try to have the parts you are soldering between the heat source and the solder. And this will also help. Mix up a solution of alchohol and boric acid. Make it a little bit thinner than white glue. The boric acid will separate and settle, so keep stiring when using. coat the assembly with the solution everywhere except the area you plan to solder. Use a heavier coat at any other solder joints. Then light the solution on fire to burn away the alchohol. This will leave a white crust of boric acid coating the parts. Repeat this process until the parts have good thick coating. This coating will keep the areas not being soldered cool, preventing joints soldered earlier from poping loose from the the heat. Good luck. It's not all that hard once you get the hang of it. Laws" Bob Pearson "Peter Crow" <888444222@email.msn.com> "Fernando E. Lamas, M.D." any more takers? Good news, aside from the front starboard angle of the flightline I mentioned, Robert Karr sent me 2 more: Left sides of the aircraft with a cow standing guard. Left rear sides of the aircraft. One more photo missing. If anyone has it, please send to me to be included in the batch. It would be preferrable if the file is nice and large, 300dpi or higher would be ideal so that the markings of the planes are recognizeable. ********************************************************************* Joey Valenciano WW1 modeller, teacher, jazz musician, joeyval@philonline.com. sitarist Metro-Manila, Philippines "The more you know, the more you don't know." ********************************************************************* ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 1137 **********************
